SANFL mini-draft

It's not just imports that get the sulks playing for their SANFL club. Jonathan Giles (on Port's list for 4 years without getting a game and recruited directly from Centrals), after getting delisted from Port got the sulks and walked out on Centrals blaming the club for ruining his AFL career.
I never heard this, do you have a link to a newspaper article or was it more behind closed doors?

The SANFL clubs probably recognise that Port will be playing Butcher as soon as they can.

I'm surprised Thompson went so early!

Talia to follow in the footsteps of Mackay, Cook and McKernan and gun it up at South :D:thumbsu:
Haha, South have a very very good track record lately for us.

Van Berlo, then Mackay, then Otten (who you forgot) then SMACK (and hopefully Cook)...the future looks bright for Talia. :D

Dangerfield went to West Adelaide with Pick 10 (second last in that mini draft) in 2007 so it's not uncommon for higher ranked picks to get picked up towards the end of the draft.

Yeah, as Jo mentioned, Dangerfield was a special case in that he was spending his first year in Victoria and also considering he was a first round midfielder, chances were that he was probably going to spend a fair amount of his second year in the AFL, so not surprising he fell.

I just think its a bit funny that Butcher went so late, its like most of the clubs forgot he was there and I'd be very surprised if he played that much footy next year for the Power, how many 18 year old talls genuinely play much AFL footy before their 3rd/4th year on a list? He'd have to be a pretty special talent to do so. I really don't see him pushing one of Tredrea, Salter or even Westhoff out of the way(figuratively, not literally as a 2 year old child could push Westhoff out the way:D). I just wonder whether the Power have had a quiet word with all the SANFL clubs, indicating that they'd like Butcher to go to Port Maggies, so its easier for them to help with his kicking issues.

For some reason Sam Shaw seems like a great fit at the Bays. No idea why, just a feeling. Hopefully the boys get good opportunities at league level and impress!

Was quoted on the Port board not long ago but have no idea which thread it was.
IMO it is partly true as he was the third ruck at Centrals however he did play a number of games so perhaps he could have done better.

How the f*** did Butcher, a first rounder picked at #8, last till the last pick in the draft? Even then, how did JMP last till pick #7? Looks like the SANFL clubs really rate Port's draft effort.

As someone else said Port will play him almost immediately so they wont get much out of Butcher. Wouldnt that be the case with most selections? You'd assume that the clubs would look at players and determine how likely they are to play AFL regualry, thus reducing any potential impact for themsleves. I for one wouldn't bother picking any highly rated, ready made players. Never thought I'd say this, but Cameron Cloke would be one of the better options given he wouldn't play much AFL!

And Vader- completely forgot the whole VFL into AFL side of things, obivously thats the key reason for difference in interest levels. Your right about the future of SANFL interest too, all kids now will have grown up with Adelaide and Port getting the vast majority of media exposure, I guess its up to parents etc to keep the interest there!

I'd wager big money on Cam Cloke playing more games for the Power next year than Butcher. 18 year old KPF's just don't play that much AFL footy in their first couple of years, even ones as well built as Hurley and Hawkins(of which Butcher isn't) are lucky to make it into double figure games.

Sadly, i think there are other factors at play in selection of these guys.
Is anyone really suprised to see Cloke and Butcher at Port Magpies?? Of course not, they are about to fold, they need all of the help they can get.
Me smells a conspiracy!!

Of course this also would help them with their desire to have Port magpies as their 2nds team.

Butcher will be lucky to play 1 or 2 afl games next year. Cloke will play the majority if not injured. An sanfl team would most likely get 2/3 years out of butcher so its very strange he went last especially after Bass?

Here's an article from the Messenger about it - http://eastern-courier-messenger.whereilive.com.au/sport/story/giles-wants-out-at-central/

IMO it sounds pretty much like sour grapes. Yes he was Centrals third choice ruckman (behind Buckets and Griffin), but with Griffin out for a fair chunk of the year injured, he had his chance to move up the ranks, but when it was a Buckets/Giles ruck attack, Buckets ended up doing 90% of the work. When all three ruckmen were available, he didn't warrant selection, then to blame the club he won 2 SANFL premierships in for ruining his AFL carreer it just reeks of Julius Hodge style sour grapes.

Theres no guarantee that Butcher will play all year in the SANFL, let alone 3 years. If hes any good, theres not many standing in his way for a spot in the side. Hes potentially better than Salter, Stewart and the Hoffs combined so if he shows good early form, and we arent winning games, then he'll be in the side by mid year in my opinion.

I didnt think he'd go last though.

Cloke has to get on the main list first to be able to play the majority of games.

There's no guarantees with any of these blokes though, I suspect Westies thought they'd get a few extra games out of Tippett, after they'd picked him at #1 a couple of years back, similar to Souths when the picked up VB and Mackay, who both would have been lucky to weigh in much over 65kg's after being drafted. Butcher, the #8 pick lasting till the last pick... something smells a little fishy... and its not just my lunch;)

But meh, what do I care really what happens with the Power players.

Shattered that Norwood didn't get a pick. I know you guys are all shattered too that you won't get any more heavily biased, super awesome reviews of the latest draftee.

Edited for accuracy. :D

Now that Davis and Armstrong are likely to start pushing into the senior side, and Gill and Gallman are gone, and North picked up a Port player, there is now no reason to care about their games anymore. Sorry RoosterLad, Riggy, I'm off the bandwagon :p

We were never going to win a flag with you on the wagon anyway.
