As an aside, do you guys reckon the SANFL clubs should be divided the same way they are for father - son selections. The clubs aligned to the Crows are able to select only from the Crows recruits, and likewise for the Power aligned clubs, they could only select from the Power recruits.

The clubs aligned to the Crows are Sturt, Norwood, Glenelg and South, the clubs aligned to the Power are the Port Magpies, Centrals, Norths, Westies and WWT.

So instead of turning out like this --

1. Panthers - Daniel Talia
2. Port Magpies - Cameron Cloke
3. West - Scott Harding
4. North - Andrew Moore
5. Eagles - Luke Thompson
6. Glenelg - Sam Shaw
7. Sturt- Jasper McMillan-Pittard
8. Central - Jack Gunston
9. Panthers - Daniel Bass
10. Port Magpies - John Butcher

It would have looked something like this --

1. Panthers - Daniel Talia
2. Port Magpies - Cameron Cloke
3. West - Scott Harding
4. North - Andrew Moore
5. Eagles - Jasper McMillan-Pittard
6. Glenelg - Sam Shaw
7. Sturt - Luke Thompson
8. Central - Jack Gunston

Okay, South Adelaide misses out in an extra player this year, but it would probably even itself out over the years. Some years the Crows would have more new players than the Power, hence the 4 Crows aligned clubs would get more players in those seasons.

The main reason for doing the way I suggest is that the new Crows players, and the new Power players, would get more time with their new AFL team-mates, not all mixed up all over the place.

Maybe if the SANFL clubs were to see sense, all the Crows players could be transferred to one of the Crows aligned clubs, and all the Power players could be transferred to one of the Power aligned clubs.

Sure this may take several seasons, but I can see benefits in the scheme.

Actually, I'd like to see a system that compensates teams that lose players to the draft. Look at West Adelaide - lost the 2003 GF, then lost 5 players in the draft (including Cooney and Sam Fisher) and have lived at the bottom of the SANFL ladder since.

You could order the mini-draft on the order that the SANFL players are draft to the AFL. So this year, the order would be :-

3. Central District (Daniel Menzel)
4. North Adelaide (Luke Tapscott)
5. South Adelaide (Justin Bollenhagen)

As for Asgardian's idea I think it's the equivalent of moving football to Adelaide Oval instead of AAMI or a new stadium. A half assed idea designed to solve a non-existant problem by upsetting a formula that's not causing any problems.

Don't mind that idea. Especially because some of the stronger SANFL teams contain heaps of 25+ year olds who are never going to be drafted so it is easier for them to keep their team together PLUS bring in a talented kid via Crows/Power each year.

The one I would like to see though is that if an SANFL club has a player drafted by the Crows/Power, then this player counts as their selection in the mini-draft.

For example, let's say that West Adelaide lose Sam Fisher in the draft to St Kilda and then in the mini-draft pick up Partick Dangerfield, a Victorian who was drafted by Adelaide.

At the same time, Sturt have Danyle Pearce drafted by Port Adelaide in the draft and then in the mini-draft pick up Troy Chaplin, a Victorian who was drafted by Port Adelaide.

In the example, both clubs have produced one draftee each, yet Sturt ends up with two players out of it whereas West only has one. In the example Danyle Pearce should automatically count as Sturt's first pick in the mini-draft. They shouldn't get a second bite at it just because they were lucky enough to have a player drafted by one of the two SA clubs.

There would be no higher motivation for a young player to play well and bust into the Crows line up than having to play every second week at a depressing, vacant, windswept, atmosphere-less cow paddock and getting belted off the park.

No wonder Mackay, VB and Otten got out of there so quick!

I understand where you are coming from and there's certainly merit to your argument, but I think it just starts to get a bit messy.

Lets say you bring in the rule that local recruits count for mini-draft selection and West finish bottom and South finish 2nd to bottom. West's then produce say a bloke who gets drafted in the 5th-6th round/rookie draft by either the Crows or Power, this player then counts as their first pick, Souths don't produce anyone and as such get first pick of the interstate recruits.

On the otherhand you bring in the rule that compensates(with a pick in the minidraft) sides that lose players to the draft as well and West produce say Adam Cooney who gets drafted interstate, gaining them the first pick in the minidraft. But... they also produce Joe Average, who gets picked up in the rookie draft by a local club and thus must use the pick they got for Cooney on Joe Average. Whereas South's lose Jeremy Mediocre interstate through a rookie pick, thus gaining them the 2nd selection in the minidraft and because they don't produce anyone else, they get first choice on all the interstate draftees. Is that fair?

I dunno, in the end it all gets too complicated I think, if these guys are any good, the SANFL clubs will unlikely see much of them anyway, maybe they get one good season out of them. If clubs need compensation for players lost to AFL clubs, then a monetary reward is probably the best way to go about it(which I think may already happen), the vast majority of footy clubs can always do with more cash, so I doubt they'd complain too much.

I don't see where the complicated part comes from. The mini-draft order is set the same as it is now. The players who are drafted from the SANFL simply become part of the player distribution list and are automatically aligned to their home clubs.

It is a positive for an SANFL club to have one of their players drafted by an SA club, even if they're just rookies. For instance at Sturt we are now going to have Matthew Jaensch improve his fitness, strength, decision-making, skills and be surrounded by AFL quality players on a weekly basis. And he is unlikely to play many games for Adelaide ever. So that is a massive win for us.

I like sigur's suggestion.

In his post above Carl clearly shows that the suggested system would be much fairer than the current system, which is totally inequitable for the reasons that he has outlined.

IMO the SANFL should really have a good look at this suggestion.
