The BIG men fly. Reckon ER Davies donned it for Sturt & if memory serves me correct, arguably SANFL's best ever ruckman - Jimmy Brenton of Woodville - also wore this number with distinction.

On the opposite end of the scale - Kym Hodgeman for the Bays??

Cheers,

Fatty

Also, I believe Bob Quinn wore No.1 in 1938 & 1945, and Bob Hank wore No.1 in his 1947 MM season.

24 has been a reasonable number for Port players in my time watching footy.

Started off with Mark Tylor.
1985-1997.
161 Senior Games. 385 Senior Goals
138 Reserves Games. 391 Reserves Goals.

Won the Ken Farmer Medal twice, in 1992 with 97 goals and 1993 with 93 goals.

Missed the 1992 Grand Final with a broken hand, and the story goes it was a punch to Scott Hodges that caused it after Scotty was giving him crap about Tylor moving over when he came back for the finals.

Led the club goalkicking 3 times - 92, 93 and in 95 (53 goals).

Was a pretty good forward capable of kicking a bag of goals but also went missing at times. Was always a backup to Scotty and his break came when Scotty was in the AFl for most of the early 90s. Never really worked as a foil to Scotty either.

Played in only the 1 premiership from memory - 94, playing in a back pocket.

Left for Glenelg early in 1996 in the swap that saw Mcguiness end up at Port. Crawled back to Port for 1997 for 7 more games and 15 goals.

Had he not been playing in the Scott Hodges era he probably would have been remembered as a champion and would have kicked more goals than he did.

From 1998 onwards it was Bryan Beinke.
Started his career in 1993 as an 18 year old but only played 7 games up until 1996 when he broke thru for 22 games in a back pocket. Played some good games that year and played in our 1996 Premiership team as well as winning our Most Improved award.

His 96 form saw his drafted as a rookie to North Melbourne. He lasted a year there and then came back to Port for 1998.

1998 was the year he really strove forward as a footballer. Still playing as a defender it took injuries to Hodges and Phillipou, and Evans promoted to the AFL to move him up forward and his career changed.
He immediately impacted kicking 38 goals from Round 14 onwards, was one of the BOG in the State Game kicking 4 goals, kicked 19 goals in the Finals to I believe equal the SANFL best for Goals in a Finals Series including 4 in the Premiership against Sturt (including 2 match winning last quarter goals) and also won our Best and Fairest and Goalkicking award.

This saw him get drafted by the Adelaide Crows at the end of 1998. He was in and out of the Crows side over his AFL career which spanned 4 years, 38 games and 42 goals. He played only the 9 SANFL games in 1999 (kicking 24 goals) including the Premiership against Norwood. He played 11 games in 2000 kicking 22 goals, 12 games in 2001 for 24 goals and 6 games in 2002 for 18 goals. He then quit the AFL as he said he didnt want to go thru another pre season. He spent last year in the SANFL for mixed form. He started off slowly but finished strongly to end up with 41 Goals in his 17 games.

He ended up with 107 Games for 169 Goals, 1 Best and Fairest, 1 Leading Goalkicker and 3 Premierships.

This year no. 24 is young Cam Ilett. He debuted in 2002 as a 16 year old, didnt play any games last year but is playing very well this year and may get drafted after his 2nd good U/18 Carnival in a row for NT.

Ah, the dear departed John Wood, my old history teacher :)

I take it that 1914 was the first season numbers were worn in the SANFL?

Could you please check for the following?:
1946 Bob Hank (WT)
1947 Bob Hank (WT)
1948 Ron Phillips (NA)
1949 Ron Phillips (NA)

Also, there were retrospective medallists named after that publication:

1915 Shine Hosking (PA)
1915 Charles Perry (N)
1921 Vic Richardson (S)
1921 Walter Scott (N)
1921 J.Karney (WT)
1925 P.Bampton (PA)
1939 R.McArthur (WA)
1949 Alan Crabb (G)

In the book under 'guernsey number' prior to medallists in 1914 it just says "-" as it also does for the winners from 1946-51.

As Ron Phillips wasn't yet vice captain in 48 or 49 I am pretty sure he wore his number 9 guernsey. The same number ken Farmer wore as a matter of interest when he wasn't captain or vice captain.

EDIT - PS - Check ya PMs!!!!

What about the guy who wore 24 for Woodville after Jim Brenton - Larry Krieg, arguably SANFL's best ever ruckman? ;) Tom West was 24 before Jimmy.

I reckon Brenton "Shotgun" Miller wore 24 for West Torrens in the 70's.

And LL - what about Alan Stringer at Pospect? :D

Between Bruce Nyland and Mark Tylor, a few Port players wore 24, including;

Tony Hannan
Tony Martyn
Graeme Robertson
Brenton Owens
