Kurt Tippett had far superior ruck skills to the chosen one in James Sellar.

From what I saw in the U/18 champs James played in the ruck and KT played forward. I didn't really keep up with the goings on in Southport.

We MUST MUST MUST play Sellar as a forward.

We have enough quality Ruckman and we need a KPP forward and Sellar could be anything.

Even with Meese hopefully leaving at the end of the year and we have some great ruck depth.

Exactly – even if James Sellar performs brilliantly in the ruck for Glenelg we cannot be seduced into believing his best position is the ruck. His best and most promising position is as a key forward and the AFC must be patient and persistent in him playing as a key forward. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

He played 2 pre season trial games for the AFC and a handful of senior SANFL game for West Adelaide as a ruckman to gauge a good enough option. Granted I have not seen a lot of James Sellar play as a ruckman but I am still confident in Tippets’ ability to suggest that he is a superior ruckman.

Kurt Tippett showed enough in his few senior SANFL game to suggest that we will not lose much if John Meesen wants to return to Victoria.

Underage football is very different to senior football.

Lack of awareness. That had nothing to do with lack of pace due to OP. A big lad takes a high mark and attempts to outrun a midfielder with a 20m run up. What happens?

People forget that this kid was nearly a year younger than most of the draftees last year. He's got a shiteload of 'potential' (yes I know, dirty word).

5 goals in 2 games in a return to league footy is more than decent after a long lay off. I'm more than happy with his development so far.
Oh please. That was NOT a lack of awareness but just plain stupidity that cost his team a goal. He did one bad thing for the day and that was it.

He was well aware of the fact that Elstone was right next to him. It wasn't 20 meters as you suggested. Elstone took 2 steps to tackle Sellar. Sellar even looked at Elstone before deciding to play on and he got caught holding the ball. Awareness had nothing to do with it but decision making did.

Anyway, Sellar was OKish. Kicked a couple of goals, took a nice diving mark in the first quarter that wasn't paid. I do agree that he looks a much better ruckman than key forward. Although he only went up against Maric once but he comfortably handled Meikeljohn (sp?). His second goal was all class and showed us the footy smarts that kid has. He used a pack as a screen to lose his man and go front and square for a crumbing goal. Football IQ at its best. He needs to improve the engine. He was blowing pretty hard in the first quarter and he never got out of the forward 50

Maric was a GUN! EASILY the best ruckman on the ground. Tapwork was very very good, little intercepts were great. Disposal was good. He did a lot of little things that will not show in the stats but I think the AFC heirarchy would be very happy with his game. He is not far off AFL football.

Douglas was dangerous. His tackling was a class above and he showed a bit of speed a couple of times and was more than willing to hunt the ball at the ground level. His first goal was all class.

Hinge got a bath from Clayton but that was a bad match up from the start. He started to play a bit better once moved off him but then copped one in the throat (might have been from Sellar) and went off. Showed him on the bench with an oxygen mask. Didn't look good. Hope he is OK.

Overall a pretty good game. Port should have won had they kicked straight but Glenelg had their moments as well.

I didn't see his trial games so I can't comment. I still feel he was recruited as a KP forward, but from what I've seen in his SANFL games, he certainly has all the attributes to be a quality ruckman. However one Craig McRae described him as " a similar player to Alastair Lynch".

Sellar has played pretty much all his junior footy in the ruck. I'm positive he won't be a ruckman for the AFC, because he hasn't been recruited for that purpose. However if he was recruited as a ruckman (albeit an undersized one) he would've had a very good chance of getting a game early this season. The club would also be very hesitant to give Kurt a senior game, given he had played less than 30 games ever before he was drafted. Tremendous upside.

It was a very stupid move by James Sellar to try and run away from the marking contest but also a sign of budding swagger and arrogance. He tried to sprint away from the marking contest because he has confidence in how quick he can move, this time he was found out.

We need a forward who has that swagger and arrogance to take a few on and back himself in.

should i call you KG - thats great fence sitting :D

Stiffy was right but, Port Adelaide should have won but there kicking for goal was atrocious. It’s not like they missed goals on the boundary line or on the run, 5 or 6 of them were in the central corridor and with little or no pressure.

Waterhouse and Meiklejohn missed two sitters just before half time and then Meiklejohn missed another one during the 3rd quarter (Out on the full). Mark Clayton had two shot on gaol from 45 out that should have been sitters in senior SANFL football level. 5 points that should ahve been goals.

Bad kicking = bad football. (not that is KG) :D

I thought sellar played alright. Maric was very good and dominated in the ruck against all glenelg ruckman. Hope Hinge is ok

My first impression from the contact was that he was winded / whacked more in the chest than the throat and then when he started coughing blood and motioning towards his throat and not seeming to be able to breathe easily - I wouldn't be surprised if he had a punctured lung or similar. With our luck at the moment it will be the worst possible injury that it could be..... :(

Good to see the boys having pretty good games except for Hinge. Sellar must be doing ok. He's kicked 5 goals in 2 games... after an injury I would say that is a pretty good haul. He's still not up to match fitness and when he is he will dominate. Hopefully he is groomed as a CHF we desperately need. I wouldn't mind if he played in the ruck. He could be very handy for us in the forward line with his useful ruckwork. It will also help improve his engine.

He is playing more as a FF. Personally, I think he is better suited further up the ground where he has a bit more freedom to move and more space to lead into but it looks like Glenelg have Kirby (sp?) do that role.

Kirkby ;)

I actually get confused between the two, especially wearing 26 & 28.

Bad kicking = bad football.

Must be something in the game plan then. Maybe Macca19 can enlighten me if they play wide. I have been to both Sturt wins, and yes Sturt kicked exceptionally well at Alberton but even at Unley Port kicked poorly and could have won the match

I dont think we play all that wide. I just think our kicking for goal is deplorable. The problem is we seem to miss far too many goals from very gettable positions. Happened about 4-5 times yesterday (i think Stiffy gave some examples) where we had shots from dead in front and missed.

Cost you the game Macca.

Apart from the set shots that should have been kicked, Biacsi alone missed running shots on goal 2 or 3 times that once again should have been kicked.

Port kick straight - they win comfortably.

Nick Gill kicked 4 goals vs South today and a couple of points to go with it. Most probably took around about 7 or 8 marks. Archard according to the radio had 18 possessions and kicked 1 goal.

As good as he is at SANFL level I seriously hope we don’t upgrade Archard. If we do it simply means we have to delist another player, and I’m struggling to think of 4 as it is.
