Hi Footy Fans...

Well, now we know who rules in the world of local leagues. The South Australian National Football League has proved it's the best competition outside the AFL by defeating the VFL on Adelaide Oval. Victoria kept within arms reach up until the third quarter, where South Australia just went on their merry way. SA running out the winners by 38 points.

Here is the final result...

STATE LEAGUE MATCH
Saturday June 23, 2001
South Australia 20.14 (134)
Victoria 14.12 (96)
Adelaide Oval

Crowd was in excess of 7,300 people, so all in all not a bad crowd for this match. Not a heck of a lot of--if any...--Victorian supporters at the game which is a pity.

Best on ground for SA was West Adelaide's Ben Hollands who claimed the Fos Williams Medal, and for Victoria, it was David Robbins of Springvale who took the Frank Johnson Medal.

COMING IN ROUND 13 OF SANFL...

Friday June 29
Fairmont Homes Williams-Gallagher Cup Game
Norwood v. Port Adelaide; Norwood Oval—Night Match

Saturday June 30
Central District v. Eagles; Elizabeth Oval
West Adelaide v. Glenelg; Adelaide Oval
North Adelaide v. Sturt; Prospect Oval

South Adelaide will have the bye.

So until next time State hostilities resume between the local footy superpowers...SA RULES!!

See you at the footy!

Congrats SA, raboyle and other SA supporters.

I certainly don't follow these games closely, but it was in the back of my mind : SA's hosting Victoria in a footy match, I'm from Victoria, I hope we win.

I didn't think I'd care too much for the result, but when I heard it on the radio, on the way home from another Fitzroy Reds win, I couldn't help but utter 'bugger!'.

Good to see the rivalry is as strong as ever. Sometimes I wonder if we wouldn't be trifle bored without it :)

Mobben,

Seems a long time ago since 95,000 turned up to the MCG to watch a Vic v SA game...

And a long time since my youth when a SA v Vic game would draw 50,000 to Football Pk or 40,000 to Adelaide Oval....

to watch what was once the equivalent to pre AFL ,VFL play the current post VFA ,VFL is well firstly humiliating, secondly a direct result of the desire of the pre AFL/VFL to gain toatal control of Australias football markets for its own financial benefits.

To this I say, you filthy money hungry, power crazy, egotistical, hedonistic, self important Bastards..

Football has forever been prostituted by the power brokers at AFL house..

but in spite of that...

well done SA

I have tried, and tried, and tried. I even got snappy with my missus when she opened a drawer that banged into my chair at the time. That's how frustrated I was.

But I've given up, and I'll just ask you.

I don't understand the above paragraph. What does it mean? Pre-post-VFL-AFL-VFA ... I'm confused.

Are you trying to say that SA used to play against the VFL/AFL ... and that now they play the VFA/VFL? Yes, that would have to pee you off.

But wasn't the SA team lacking its AFL players? Wasn't the VFL team also lacking its AFL players? Surely neither were permitted to play.

Or maybe you can just rephrase the question. I honestly don't understand it.

Cheers.

In the days before State of Origin which was introduced in the 1979 footy season, the SANFL and VFL would play each other and the VFA, would not. Back then, it was state against state and league against league at the same time. The VFA was a different league.

See, in State of Origin, it was purely state against state. Up until 1990, when the AFL was born, SA born players in any other state would return and put on the colours of their state. When AFL came in, they picked the concept up and ran it. After that, the AFL based players would play for their home. So players like Craig Bradley who plays for Carlton and used to play for the Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL, would pull on the SA jumper, and Kane Johnson, who plays for Adelaide, came from the Tac Cup competition in the VFL, would go back to Victoria. And Wayne Carey is one of the Allies.

But while State of Origin was going on, the SANFL was playing state footy against other teams. State League footy is where a state's main league would take on another league. So players from the local clubs of a league would be selected. And we ended up playing the VFL, which was the VFA.

Hope you get the concept now!

Anymore questions about State footy, just ask.
