THE SANFL has reaffirmed its desire to have AFL clubs Adelaide and Port Adelaide rejoin its competition next year but acknowledges there are hurdles to overcome.
With the AFL on Monday announcing a new eastern seaboard state league competition next season, which will see the NEAFL join forces with the VFL, as the fallout from COVID-19 continues, the SANFL said it plans to have teams from the Crows and Port return to its league after a one-year hiatus.

“The involvement of Port Adelaide and Adelaide in the SANFL has been successful and we are looking for that to continue for at least the term of the existing arrangement, which is until the end of the 2028 season,’’ SANFL chief executive Jake Parkinson said.

The Crows and Port also say they want to field teams in the SANFL next season after being forced to withdraw this year following an AFL directive not to mix AFL and SANFL players because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Interesting... with the VFL/Eastern Football Leauge now structuring with reserves and Juniors, will the SANFL come to the party?

Bit of a nothing story. was always going to happen. AFL HQ isn't going to subsidize WA and SA clubs to join a national reserves comps.

They want control of the state leagues and this is part of the war.

They.may even be using the AFL GF as a carrot/stick.

The AFL should at the very least demand a seat on the SMA for the funds the SANFL get.

They aren't going to spend money where they don't have to for years, as taking over the SANFL and WAFC can wait.

The "Agreement" that Port and Crows signed up to that expires in 2028 actually has been contractually broken by the AFL (not the clubs) with participation disallowed this season.

Hence no contract now exists.

So we should be able to exit the SANFL comp without having to pay them any forfeiture money. ;):D:D

The return of Port to the SANFL should be put to the members for a vote.

I for one couldn’t care less if we never play in that arsewipe of a league ever again!

If there is some way of joining the new eastern reserves competition, I would prefer the club to explore that option before we simply dive back in to the SANFL.

They need us more then we need them. About time we leveraged this as a club. No AFL in the SANFL unless we get one of the 4 football SMA seats. I’d rather us and the Crows play in a 4 team WA/SA reserves then just go back to those leeches.
Even if we just played the Crows every week it would be more match practice for the squad than we're getting this year.

If anything, our performance in the AFL this year shows that the benefits of having our reserves play in the SANFL are overstated.
