ive been thinking about sav a bit lately and remembering how good he was back in the day.
i remember watching him kick a lazy 10 against the crows...bloody awesome.
anyway i just dont really know what happened when he left, was he traded to north or delisted?? and also how bad had his form been in the lead up to his departure??

thoughts...

If I remember correctly, Sav was definitely delisted by Collingwood, and the Kangaroos snapped him up in the PSD. Sav's form in his last year at Collingwood was very poor, and he probably needed the change of clubs.

Malthouse delisted him and North drafted him (at 50something I think). I was disappointed at the time but in reality he was over weight, had a crook knee and couldn't catch a cold at the time. The fact we then took Cummings is another matter though and perfectly illustrates the idiotic nature of our list clowns. Why dump a suspect Sav for nothing and take a similar player in Cummings looking for his 4th club?

If you squash that period down into a day, then it makes it seem worse Mark. Events happened in between.

Fact is, Sav was flicked at the end of 2000 and was subsequently drafted at pick 30. Obviously we shopped him around, and it was done poorly (as I think disclosing to be delisted players was dum this year). The Roos simply might have just said, we'll take a punt with him in the draft, thus killing a pick, rather than strengthening us. Anyway, this was poorly done.

Cummings was taken at the start of the 2002 season. By that stage we'd realised that superstar forwards by the names of Tuckey, Baynes and Stone, weren't quite going to make the grade and all we had was Tarrant.

I ain't baking up Malthouse's "mates helping mates" recruiting policy. Just that you gotta remember the factors leading up to decisions such as taking Cummings.

We still had Benny didn't we?

I hear what you say Fig but the reality is we took Cummings when we had Rocca, Tarrant & Fraser and guess what, that’s what we ended up going with all year. The reality is Cummings was just another failure by our list clowns and they are the blokes that dumped Sav for having largely the same issues as Cummings except 3 other clubs had already deemed Cummings not to be for them. I guess he wasn't expensive though. I just struggle with the decision making processes and the judgement exercised. I could perhaps get over it if we didn’t review them all and decide they were the people to go into another season with.

Forget Bird Flu and SARS we have Ben Kinnear Virus infestation.

There simply isnt room for two monster forwards in a team. Only Loewe and Lockett in my memory played well together as a team of monsters, and Lockett is the greatest full forward of all time. Perhaps Lynch and Brown did well together as two huge units in the same forward zone, but Brown was very young and mobile when they won their flags.

Even Hawthorn only ever had one huge man in the forward line - Dunstall - because Brereton was relatively short, lightly framed, and mobile.

Sav had to go because Anthony was the better younger and fitter footballer. Simple as that. It was the right decision then, its the right decision now in hindsight. Sav has continued a lot longer than most people woudl have forecast, but when you analyse his career at North you'll see that he's been consistent and reliaable, but rarely damaging. No doubt we could have traded him better, but thats another story.

Cummings was a late pick, always expected to be a one year contract only. The fact that the experiment failed did not mean anything, because it didnt cost us anything.

True enough. Sav has been consistent, not outstanding, for the Roos over the last few seasons (45 and 49 goals?) and they would have been in deep do-do without him. Anthony falling over and missing most of the year (along with Fraser) meant an injured Tarrant kept playing and struggling. Wouldn't be discussing this as an issue if not for the A.Rocca injury making it look like a huge mistake was made. Also compounded by the injuries to Davidson.

Nonoe would trade for sav back then because he did look washed up but he has done well to extend his career this far.

Well summarised Roowatch. Sav Rocca would of retired by 2001/2002 if he stayed with Collingwood because he was getting stale be it because of his attitude, motivation whatever. The delisting did him good as he realised he needs to improve significantly and work hard. Sav Rocca even on his Kangaroos career form would be behind Tarrant and Anthony and even Molloy in 2001.
