AFL Club
Richmond
Other Teams
Fulham FC, Real Madrid
is the fact that the club was virtually bankrupt and on the verge of closing in 1990 meant that we have been chasing everyone else for the last 25 years.
We virtually had to start from scratch when the power clubs Collingwood, Geel, Hawks, Carl and Essendon were winning premierships. Then the expansion clubs came in and got stacks of money and players. We got ourselves out of debt, slowly, and now are pushing for a longevity that was almost impossible to see 25 years ago.
Had Richmond been given the money from the AFL that every other start up club/ clubs on the brink, would our situation be different now? i think so. During the 90's - early 2000s we were fighting with both hands tied behind our back, something that would have caused other clubs to fold in that time.

am i right in believing that coming back from the brink of extinction been underestimated during this time?

Yes. I believe so. Look how Melbourne have propped themselves up. DH has largely done the correct thing rebuilding the list and it will pay off in two-3 years when our core of youngsters has 50-100 games. just needs to keep doing it and not get so many stop gap poor oldies. you pay for quality. we have time to correct this however. this year has hurt we should get a top 10 pick and we need to find a gun with it. then its back to heads down and working our butts off. we have enough talent to make finals next year imo.

with whom? Grigg? get real!

That was a long long time ago. Set us back for a little bit but for one we were a basket case from about 83 on, and secondly you can't use 24 years ago as an excuse.
That's about 3 footy lifetimes ago.

I would argue that the set up of Brisbane (Bears) was a total disaster and got nowhere near the level of support from the AFL that was required to go into a new market (thus they learnt their lesson for GC and GWS). Look at the mish mash rabble that the Bears were in their early day. They were completely uncompetitive.
But they then won 3 premierships in a row and became a fierce club.
To quote the second poster in this link......enough with the excuses

Considering the Hawks were goin to amalgamate with melbourne in less the time and have won two flags
It's all about Admin, coach and assistants and recruiters to get a team of young men on the one wavelength to strive for glory
We have all four groups going in all different directions Which implies we have no leadership on or off the field and a positive successful culture will always be light years away
