HELP...ALL PAID UP AND PASSIONATE SUPPORTERS NEEDED!

There is a petition starting to force a meeting to try and stop the selling of our social club !

Petitions will be around the ground at the Legends Game as well as the Family day !

We need at least 100 signatures to force this meeting but the more the better!

If you are passionate about this club, and would like to have somewhere where you can socialise and meet the players after a match or have a function there!

If you are a member !

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION !

We have to try and stop this happening , we need the social club!

The selling of this has been in the works for a while and is new to the agenda unlike what some people think , Jeff did not know about this when he came to power , it has been in the works for at least 3 years!

They are selling social club memberships , yet if they do this,
THERE WILL BE NO SOCIAL CLUB FOR THEM AS WELL AS US!

HELP US PLEASE AS WE NEED ALL OF YOU TO HELP STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING !

Don't sit back and think you can not help ,YOU CAN , sign the petition and do your part in helping stop this from happening!

PLEASE DON'T SELL OUR SOCIAL CLUB !

Hell NO!

a) It's losing millions of dollars a year; and will only lose more as we move to Waverley
b) The money from the sale will help to either;
i) create a new social club near the Waverley Park site (which will make a hell of a lot more buisness) or the MCG
ii) Improving the coaching staff
iii) Improving the training facilities
iv) Stick it in the bank and gain interest from it!

c) Will create a public spout that will spread through to the media
d) Makes little to no return
e) We have outgrown the need for a social club

it aint losing millions but the meeting that they want is to answer questions that were not answered before , it may not save it but there is no harm done in finding out the answers as to why etc

If people frequented the club like we are supposed to then the club would not have been sold, we had 3000 Social Members, only 30 of those would turn up every Tuesday and Thursday. My Tuesday and Thursday posts about interviews and Players nights went largely ignored. It is too late to save it, it is a waste of time, money or effort to even try. The place has been a sitting duck for the last 10 years. If we try and save it, it will cost us $500,000 a year to run. If the social club stays the football club might cease to exist, which one should survive? If both are being used, we will continue to be down the bottom of the ladder. Just get used to the Glenferrie as our Social Venue 'Watering Hole' for 2006 and onwards. It is too late to shut the gate when the horse has bolted, it should have been done 10 years ago.

I think I can count on one hand the number of times I've been there.

It's a thing of the past, it's losing to much $$$, it's worth a HEAP of $$$ in land value. It can be replaced/relocated and hopefully (on the last time I was there) updated in a new venue somewhere else that can generate a contining profit and provide a meeting place for Hawthorn supporters.

Understand the idea of the heart of wanting to keep it but in this instance, the heart wont over-rule the head. Sell it.

The reason we are getting rid of it is that it is costing us a tidy sum to operate.

Money is vital in today's game. If selling the social club gives us a better chance of our existance, then so be it.

I have fond memories of getting down there of a Thursday night as a kid, and also of the place rocking of a Saturday after a game. Footy, and Hawthorn with it, is a different game now though. Clubs are no longer as close to their supporters as they once were, and places like the social club have lost their relevance. The players only come back when they are sponsored by someone, or some company, and the tight-knit Glenferrie feeling has sadly long gone. The move to Waverley is great for the players, because they can have their ice-bath while been fed their stats on an underwater laptop and being fed Musashi energy bars, but it has ruined the fabric of the "family club". The social club was a central place for that family atmosphere, but has been a dud for a decade or more now, like AFL.

I agree with having a "pseudo social club" at a pub somewhere, and I think a local publican could do a lot worse than contact the HFC to get a swag of their memorabilia and paint the place brown and gold.

The social club was great in it's time, but unfortunately the lack of numbers shows that it has gone south like much of footy culture these days.

this is the email i got that might explain why they are doing this ok.

to Hawks Heroes,

The point most people do not appear to understand is that the Social Club was purchased by members for the members. It was not purchased by the Football Club.

What happened a few years ago was a sham. The Football Club put a motion to Social Club members to transfer the title of the Social Club to the Football Club for "tax reasons" - put simply the argument went like this - the profits being made by the Social Club were taxable - but if the Social Club was owned by the Football Club there would be no tax liability. Unfortunately, this motion was passed, albeit a few people like myself were vehemently opposed to the motion.

The ramifications were that no only was the ownership of the Social Club removed from members, but the management of the Social Club became the responsibility of the Football Club, who had NO interest in ensuring its ongoing success.

Regards
Mr X

I go there at least once a month and take plenty of my Hawthorn mates and go to some of the player nights with Graham Arthur host, they are really great and we get to talk to the players and old players from the 1960's etc. They tell us lots of history and are really proud to have played at Hawthorn.

We also have a meal there and the food is really good, expecially the parma's and chips. Have the spicy sauce, its a special.

I am really disappointed that they are closing it down and going to waverley and forgetting about the traditions, but it looks like that Ian Dicker ran it into the ground over the last couple of years so it no longer makes any money. I wish Ian Dicker would say sory for destroying our social club, our history, where will we go and know that all the people there are Hawthorn people?

I am going with all my mates for one last beer and parma and say good-bye to our social club and to Graham Arthur who was great.

Thank you Ian Dicker for destroying a part of Hawthorn history.

Excuse me but it wasnt making money for over three years and Ian Dicker if anything kept it open with his own money.

The only thing thats changed over 3 years off lossing money, is Jeff is there now and Dicker is gone.

The social club was there and now its gone.

Ian Dicker has done more great things for this club than Jeff will ever do, even including his sentimental and subjective aproach towards players and officals.

Hi, it's Ian Dicker here.

I've got all the Social Club money, and I'm spending it on Champagne here in my Chateau in the Swiss Alps.

If I had posted this about Jeff I would be howled down.

Don't know who made the decission but Ian would have handled this with more sensitivity, had it been his to process.

Seriously, if training is at Waverley and games are at the 'G, what would be the point of having the social club somewhere else.

A social venue is needed, I agree, but somewhere close to where the play is.

Agree Dicker was not a cold hearted economic rationalist.
But thats the new direction we have chosen (or was chosen for us).

History will show that without Dicker or Scott there would probably be no Hawthorn.

The Glenferrie Social club is too small, outdated and losing money. Sell it and use the money to open a better venue somewhere else!

Sorry to be so blunt before but i have been a social club member for about 5 years and attend once or twice a season. Never had a good time there and mostly bypass it on match days(use the bar at the G of course). Badly setup, pokey and over crowded. Nowhere to kick back with your mates and relax unless you have booked a table. Just plain cr@p:thumbsdown:

What's there to be sensitive about Pess (serious?).

The decision needed to be made and if as Ian says he is now spending his (as is his right) money on the Alps well.. if it's losing big money it's not as though any incoming (Jeff or someone else) President wouldn't be forced into making a hard choice.

That's what the head honcho's are meant to do, make the hard calls.

Everything I've heard/read about it so far is that nobody is happy that it's being done (the closure) but the economic reality is, we cannot afford to run it. OR if we did choose to keep it going it's going to hurt us in other areas of expenditure (i.e like say.. the football dept for instance).

For mine, I'd rather money spent on the actual football side of the club any day.

Grendel I'm happy with it on face value but there are issues which could be explained further

1) the number of times glenferrie and the social club was said to be staying but only one statement to say they are closing forthwith

2) Rumours about not great treatment of the social club staff

3) A large shift in the asset base of the club. as a block of land it was somewhat 'safe' from crooked directors - hence it was not spent before 1996 and was available to operation payback as security for the club to survive. If the cash is just banked it could dissappear in a couple of years 0- after taking 50 to be built up to its current value

4) What the club intends to do for social venues in the future. In my mind the inability to get a social club overlooking the training oval misght have been a deal breaker for waverley (for which the AFL have just benefited 1and 1/2 mill large. Whos to know whether Box Hill couldn't have been developed WITH a social club etc etc

5) where night training sessions will be held tonights sessionis the LAST at glenferrie - it seems they have been unable to reach agreement with the council. Perhaps the next games at glenferrie will be soccer

This is the big one for me. Hawks have always been an "asset rich" club. If this money was used to by another block near waverley and a new Social club built, then most fans would accept it is in the interests of fans and the club. The fact the no one knows what is planned with the cash is the disturbing aspect of all of this:thumbsdown:
