Just wondering what people's thoughts are on the two clear standout pace bowlers of the current Shield season, and which should be next in line for Test duty?

Am assuming the selectors like Dorff better on account of being younger, faster and left-handed. However Sayers gets very lethal late swing, and hasn't had an interrupted season. They're an interesting contrast.

Sayers by miles.
50 wickets already this season, most wickets last season.
Dorff has one good game and all the Gropers get a bit excited. Plus he's been injured all year, could break down again anytime.

Your point's well made, but Dorff has been on the radar for a while and probably would have made a couple of squads if not for unfortunate timing with injuries.

Wondering if maybe Sayers has been pigeonholed as a Bird type.

Wouldn't surprise me if that was the case. Both have similar bowling styles and in the tests where they've been in the same squad, Bird's the one selected instead of Sayers.

Sayers, Behrendorff, Pattinson + Cummins.

4 good choices for our 3rd fast bowler in the Ashes.

As is Jackson Bird, the incumbent 3rd fast bowler, (the only fast bowler in the squad for the India series other than Starc and Hazlewood) who took 4 wickets in his most recent test match at the MCG.

Most Shield wickets last season was Mennie with 51. Sayers got 32.

I never get why people don't put polls on these type of threads.

I'd much rather face Sayers than Behrendorff. I think the Behr has more potential at the highest level, though my bias is obvious.

Behrendorff overall for mine, but given he's missed most of the season Sayers is probably ahead right now. But when both are fit and in normal form, 'dorff.

If the dorff was from NSW or Vic he would have played Test cricket by now. Sayers could well have had a game or two too, if he had the Sydney and little bit Melbourne media spotlight on him.

As many would have said already can't claim Behrendorf as a standout performer of the season in the same sentence as Sayers. Amazing first up effort and hope he finishes the season off well though
