Sayers v Behrendorff

One good game.

114 wickets @ 22.6 with a SR of 43 in 27 FC matches.

Sayers has more runs (well, wickets) on the board but Behrendorff would be higher in the pecking order in the minds of the selectors.

Yeah, nah.

Sayers has 217 wickets @ 23. Coulter-Nile has 120 @ 29. They are the same age. Which one do the selectors fall over to try and get into national sides?

I'm not talking down Sayers, far from it. I'd love to see him get a run. But the selectors have a type and he isn't it. Pat Cummins hasn't played a Shield game for 6 years but if you gave the selectors a choice between he and Sayers to replace one of the quicks in the test side they'd pick Cummins.

You're probably right. Noone ever said the selectors weren't idiots. I'm sure one day they will look at form as a factor in selecting.

I think sayers has proven that when the ball swings hes deadly. But on traditional aussie dead pitches he might not be as effective. What the selectors should start doing is consider him as a specialist for pink ball or dukes ball cricket.

Despite the pathetically indignant italics, surely it's pretty bloody obvious why NCN is considered thereabouts in our best short form bowling attacks.

List A - 93 wickets at average of 24, SR of 29
T20 - 88 wickets at 23, SR of 18
Which has translated into a solid international record:
ODI - 27 wickets at 27, SR of 30
T20I - 21 wickets at 25, SR of 18

Sayers hasn't even represented state or league T20 and with list A performances of six wickets in 11 games for the cost of 80 runs per wicket at a SR of 99...

So it's pretty disingenuous to whine that Coulter-Nile has been in the Australian set-up and Sayers has not.

I'm not whining. FFS.

I could pick any number of players with inferior FC records to Chadd Sayers that have played test cricket or made test squads.

Joe Mennie, John Hastings, Trent Copeland, Pat Cummins, Peter George... and that's just other pace bowlers.

CA has operated the same way for a long time. If you are 'in' then a decent game or two in the Big Bash or ODI or whatever will have you in the test frame. If you are 'out' then you need to do something extraordinary to get a look in.

Rubbish, complete rubbish.
He's taken all his wickets over the years with the conventional Kookaburra red ball, on pitches all over Australia.
I'm a Vic, but I reckon he is miles in front of Behrendorf, or anyone else.

Sayers deserves to get a shot due to weight of wickets and performances but I wouldn't be surprised if his bubble got burst at the top level. Not many blokes operating at his pace have been consistently successful at test level. But he has defied the odds for years so it's possible he'll do it again at the next level. It's clear he is on the radar having been 12th man in the home series. He's more of a chance of success at the top level than Mennie.

But as an overall long term prospect Behrendorff has more weapons. Quicker (although obviously not express), taller, gets more bounce. All qualities that usually equate to more success at test level. At test level swing is more of a weapon when it's a Jimmy Anderson (or above) pace.

Regardless of who you rate higher, they'll both batting to get a shot with Pattinson and Cummins expected to be back firing by the start of next summer. It'll be a couple of years yet till Stanlake and Paris really hit their stride but their ceiling is much higher than both Sayers and Dorff.

Definitely Behrendorff. Having that extra pace is massive for the selectors. If he can just stay on the park for a couple of consecutive years.
But pace isn't everything: McGrath proved that. Sayers just keeps putting the ball in the right areas time after time.

McGrath was 6 inches taller, freakishly accurate and still quicker. A pointless comparison.

I wasn't comparing McGrath to Sayers or anyone else for that matter. He was in a class of his own, and we'll be lucky to see another fast bowler quite like him for as long as we live. I was merely making the point that a bowler doesn't have to bowl at 150+ to be a successful Test bowler.
