Re: 2011 SC Forwards Discussion Thread

Anyone considering M Westhoff???

Again, 3rd year player.. $103k.... Would seem a likely cow.....

wont get a game. too many players ahead of him. Not a chance

Re: 2011 SC Forwards Discussion Thread

I cant believe im considering this but barry hall might be worth a look this year if you are like me and more interested in league wins...
My experience tells me early wins are very important so you dont fall behind and find yourself chasing your tail with trades

The first five games BBH has in matches with league games his opponents are...

Essendon @ the dome
Brisbane @ the dome
Gold Coast @ the Dome
Sydney @ manuka where he dominated last year
Richmond @ the dome

Could and should be an absolute goal fest for the big fella

thoughts???

Re: 2011 SC Forwards Discussion Thread

P. veszpremi or c. kinights or is there better value around that price?

Nah, I thought that last season. He's getting older, easily frustrated, I think there are cheaper and better options than Bazza right now.

Hmmm didn't know Brad Miller went to Richmond but he could be worth a shot. Otherwise I'd go for a new player. I always wanted to have C Masten in my midfield. Last year I had him, but there were always plenty of first year players that scored 70+ points, more than Masten. I think unless a 200-300k player looks like they are about to explode, or are coming away from injury. I'd leave them alone. You've more chance with a new player. Just wait till the NAB Cup games play.

But in answer to your question, Its a hard one. I don't think Vespremi will go 50+ to be honest, but if Knights is free from injury could go 70+. I'd go knights

Re: 2011 SC Forwards Discussion Thread

thoughts on Rioli and Roughead this season??
There is definitely value in both of those players but each have their own concerns.

Rioli is a gun and more time in the midfield should see his numbers go up. If he plays forward he will probably be tagged but if in the midfield the opposition will have to determine which of Hodge, Burgoyne, Mitchel or Rioli to tag. I think it is a case of wait until NAB Cup to see where he plays and follow the fitness of those other players I mentioned. If all are fit and Rioli spends more time in the midfield get on.

Roughead is coming off of a poor 2010 and I believe to be underpriced. His goal kicking from set shots was poor and his confidence appeared to be very low at times last year. At $378k (ave 78) he is awkwardly priced. He has shown in 2008 that he can score better (ave 86) and the extra 2 years development should see him return to this average or even improve upon it. If he improved nothing other than his kicking efficiency (53% last year compared to 60% in 2008 or 61% in 2009) he would go up in value. The biggest problem with Roughhead is the bye. If you have Franklin in your side and are considering Rioli or I Smith (rookie) then that is too many Hawthorne players to cover. In short: how many Hawks are in your forward line? Check his NAB Cup form to see if he has his confidence back and if his goal kicking has improved.

Re: 2011 SC Forwards Discussion Thread

Could be one of the best negating taggers of 2011 if Sydney use him the way they did 2nd half of 2010 - in which case he would be a S/C dud.

Re: 2011 SC Forwards Discussion Thread

I'm not sure "S/C dud" is the most appropriate term but he'll definantly be more inconsistent if they decide to use him more for a tagging type role. Then saying this, he was playing with an injury for most of last year and started the year (pre-concussion and groin injury) in career best form...

LOL - yes, "S/C dud" was my term used to ward off other people (naughty me), but in all fairness he is a difficult one to gauge; he was VERY good in that tagging role (did an absolute job on Hodge) even if that was only his role initially due to his groin injury, Kirk (no 1 tagger) is now gone (though maybe Nick Smith can take his place) AND I doubt they will be using Kieran Jack in a tagging role any more, given the way he finished the season. In short, O'Keefe's role at Sydney is currently uncertain and this will certainly have some bearing upon whether he is worthwhile or not at his price.

Re: 2011 SC Forwards Discussion Thread

Wasn't O'Keefe's more defensive role last season mostly determined by a persistent injury (groinI think)? Can't see such a damaging player both on ball and across half forward being given a negating role full time when fully fit.

Yes, as I said his groin injury was what PRECIPITATED the role change last year, but he did very well at it, he will be 30 (not really THAT old, but ...), they need to replace Kirk and Jack as taggers (Jack will still be in the team but proved one of the best S/C players over the last 7 games playing as an attacking mid and is unlikely to resume his earlier tagging role) - Nick Smith will take one of the tagging roles, which leaves one potentially open - also it has been stated that Goodes will move to his preferred position in the midfield. Unfortunately this is football and nothing is certain, the team comes first (particularly at Sydney) so I can see O'Keefe resuming his tagging role - if that's what the team deems is best for it - of course no one knows, and I hope he is used as an attacking Mid/High Fwd player ... but I worry about this uncertainty, just as I worry about people's belief that Rioli's will definitely get more midfield time this year - but that's another topic ...
:D

Re: 2011 SC Forwards Discussion Thread

I'm staying away from O'Keefe this year, at least to start with. Will be interesting to see how the new coach uses him. Same for Goodes. He's a genuine SC superstar in the midfield but in the forward line, no good. Tentatively placed A Goodes in my squad, i just love the match winning scores he can pull out of nowhere.

Also can't decide if Lance Franklin is too expensive or not. I've gone with Rioli instead thinking an injury free preseason is ominous for other teams.

Also, does anyone know how bad Travis Varcoe's injury is?

Varcoe is over his injury now.

Re: 2011 SC Forwards Discussion Thread

Johnny Butcher is making his debut in the NAB Cup this Friday, so you might wanna see how he goes for a potential bench spot. I got biiiiggggg hopes for this kid!

Re: 2011 SC Forwards Discussion Thread

Last year I had both Buddy and Rioli in my side but with the byes I'm going with one of them for now. I'm so undecided. I guess pre-season cup will settle all. but my gut is tellin' me nothin' atm.

Why does it feel like most of the forward premiums this year have a question mark over their heads?

It's like this most years I reckon.. Only 2 or 3 I reckon are worth picking this early.. Consistency always is in the back of our minds..

Which leads me to my fwd dicussion.. Jarrad Waite..

Can avg well over 90 and is awkwardly priced. He is in my side at the moment but not sure if I can keep him.. is there anyone else around the price or perhaps a bit lower who wouldn't be as risky?? suspension wise anyways..

Re: 2011 SC Forwards Discussion Thread

What are the Pros and Cons over Paul Chapman?

Pros - should end the season in the Top 3 forwards as regards average score. Cons - Well his hamstrings obviously - Ping ! His age - maybe ... but he's not THAT old. Being tagged - he and Selwood will CLEARLY be the 2 people getting tagged first with Ablett gone (with Bartel a close second if he starts reclaiming his Brownlow form).

Agreed HT, last year I was just as stumped for the last couple of spots (let alone firm conclusions on rookies before the NAB). It's hard finding upside in many of the top bracket and you know most will be available cheaper at some stage later on.

Two offhand that I've considered were Jeff Garlett - coming into his third season, had some big scores last year (144, 132, 129) but suffered from inconsistency and some very low scores, perhaps mostly due to a lack of fitness preventing him from getting more involved upfield, training well IIRC. Played 19 straight last year and will play all games when available you'd expect - not something you can say about too many in his price bracket and under. Won't surprise me if he reaches Betts' typical $450K plateau and Betts goes back a little. Also has the advantage of not being caught up in the 'mass bye' rounds.

And what about good old Porps? - in much better nick for this year apparently and he's good value if he can get back to his past form and scores. Arguably Knights is a better selection at his price and I'm sure he'll be in plenty of sides, but Porps is more likely to become a worthy 7th forward keeper IMO and deserves a passing glance at those dollars.
