Re: 2011 SC Midfielders Discussion Thread

McLean has never played more than 19 games in a season in the 6 years he's been in the AFL. Has had some ok'ish averages and would be ok value when you factor in his current price. But i just can't see him imposing himself enough to start nicking points off Judd, Murphy, Gibbs etc to raise in value. It's a no for me, just down to the fact that he cant complete a full season.

McLean averaged 102 from 16 games in 2006 but has done bugger all in SC terms since with averages of 82, 90, 80 in the next three years for the Dees.

Pass I'd say.

As for Houli he should score more this year but probably not enough to justify SC selection.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say "yes" to McLean - but it depends on what you want from him ... as a cheap player who can average well, but may struggle to see out the full season, he could be an ideal player to upgrade to Ablett after round 9 ... if he's not a "keeper" you don't NEED a full season out of him.

Houli i am a big fan of and less of an injury concern than McLean, but none of us have seen what he can do on a consistent basis (only played minimal games each season thus far) and whether he is really a "Midfielder" in Richmond's team or whether he will be used primarily on a high half forward flank (which may limit has possessions compared to a true midfielder).

I haven't played SC for a few years due to living overseas and being out of touch. Back now and into it so looking for some tips on my mids this year. I've got:

Swan, Boyd, Bartel, Scully, Krakouer, Shuey and Swallow, Gaff, M Wallis on bench.

Thoughts?

Need a cheap mid/back. Already have Heppell and cant find any others. Have Lids, God and Gibbs in backline already.

Is one MID/BACK MPP enough? Who else can I get? Dan Nicholson? But really don't want to put him in midfield...
Michael Hibberd from the Bombers is a DEF/MID MPP and looks a good chance to get games.

Kane Lucas anyone?

brad sewell anyone? did alright two years ago

Love him - but has his role in the team changed back to more of a "hard tag" option now that they have introduced Burgoyne as the more "free-running line-breaking player with sublime disposal skills" option ? They also seem to be gearing up to use Cam Bruce as a midfielder too (it's where he's been training and where he played in the intra-club match). Great player but too many question marks for me over what role he will be playing.

I would go Anthony over Martin. Like Ninja said both are injury risks, but Martin had a knee reco and he is only 22, and that rarely goes without future implications. Anthony had the stress fracture in his first year, but North hadnled that well had it hasn't seemed to be an issue since. Other than that a cut tendon and dislocation aren't injurys that will cause him to many issues in the future.
Anthony seems unlucky with injuries where Martin seems more likely to repeat, IMO.

Kieren Jack, obviously a huge onus on him to perform this year if sydney is to be competitive, and i think he will deliver what is asked of him. the question is will he have more of a tagging role this year?

will cotchin finally breakout? or are we just hearing more pipe dreams out of the tiger camp?

mitch wallis going to get a run early?
