I've had confirmation from a couple of sources now, so I'll share what I know. Apparently the formula has been overhauled for this year. All I have so far is that uncontested marks are up from 1 to 2 points from a teammate's kick, free kicks go from -6 to -4, and ruckmen should do a bit better than last year.

Hopefully they will fill us in soon and show us what the players would have averaged last year under the new formula.

From the SuperCoach website:

How points are scored
Stat Description Points Awarded/Deducted
Effective kick 4 Points
Ineffective kick 0 Points
Clanger kick -8 Points
Effective Handball 2 Points
Ineffective handball 0 Points
Handball clanger -6 Points
Handball receive 1 Point
Hardball get 4 Points
Loose-ball get 4 Points
Goal 8 Points
Behind 1 Point
Mark uncontested (maintaining possession) 1 Point
Mark contested (maintaining possession) 6 Points
Mark uncontested (from opposition) 4 Points
Mark contested (from opposition) 8 Points
Tackles 4 Points
Free kick for 4 Points
Free kick against -6 Points
Hitout to Advantage 3 Points

They'd better change the website help page soon then ...

Let's just say that it's been confirmed from within the stats provider by more than one person. I used to work there (if that's not obvious from my posting history pre 2009)

Cheers Rourke, if true then it bodes well for a Buddy type who is always giving away frees. Along with Backmen like Lake who love to chip it around in the back half.

Very interesting, I hope we get some confirmation with time to make the relevant changes!

Rourke, do you know if this is the first time the formula has been changed since SuperCoach has been running?

This is the first major overhaul since the 'situational' factor came in before the 2004 season with the fixed 3,300 points per game. Over the years there have been a few new stats which have been allocated points, and the occasional tweak to certain stats, but as far as I can remember nothing on that SuperCoach help page had changed since SC started.

This was confirmed in today's Herald Sun, although interestingly the SC website still has the old scores. Here the new points as listed:

Effective Kick 4 Points
Inffective Kick 0 Points
Clanger -4 Points
Long Kick to adv. 7 Points
Backwards Kick 1 Point
Uncontested mark from teammate 2 Points
Uncontested mark from opposition 4 Points
Contested mark from teammate 6 Points
Contested mark from opposition 8 Points
Mark on lead 5 Points
Tackle 4 Points
Free Kick against -4 Points

The obvious differences:
- "Clangers" have been converted into one stat -4 points, Clanger kick down from -8 Points and Clanger handball down from -6 Points
- Uncontested mark up to 2 Points from 1 Point, but only effective forward kicks (so Lake won't be a machine!)
- Free Kick against - again as expected, from -6 Points to -4 Points

New stats:
- Long kick to advantage - worth 3 points more than a normal effective kick, should only increase scoring output of players like Goddard
- Mark on lead - 5 points is massive! Should be great for the lead-up forwards like Riewoldt

We've always known about the "hidden" points factors in some scores, maybe the above new stats are just some clarification regarding those, or perhaps it is totally new and will have a real impact on picking players.

What are everyone's thoughts? Bit of a joke since we only know about this 2 days prior to the opening game, but makes it even more challenging!

Is this legit?

Huge changes if so. Looks like we'll see a fair increase in scores.

Weird thing is I suspect we won't. The scaling to 3300 points per game will keep it all even. I think we'll see some specific players benefit disproportionately because of their game style but the majority probably won't change all that much.

Agree, overall we probably won't notice any difference. Most likely this formula has been used for the preseason scores and nothing really is jumping out.

Yeah, the scaling will limit the overall change but certain players will do very well from it. We will most likely see a fair bit of scaling down come the final siren

It sounds like it's going to help players who generally don't use the ball well and give away free kicks. Maybe someone like Mackie, Gram, Ebert or Gilbert will be more consistent this year?

Even Franklin who loves a clanger.

Time for everyone to go back to the old....

Definitely a big win for key forwards (uncontested mark on lead seemed to be poorly rewarded compared to true uncontested mark in the past), quarter-back types (long kick... Hurn anyone?) and less devastating on those your wouldn't touch in the past because they burnt the ball (may help Palmer's score).
I like the changes.
