I just rewatched 'Shake Down the Thunder' last night and the Schneider and Dempster highlights have got me twitching nervously. Without any doubt, there will be some regret over trading these two Premiership players for a kid from Bundoora who might never play a game in the Seniors. Hopefully he will prove me wrong and win the Norm Smith in five years but that would be in stark contrast to the truckload of youngsters we've been turning over in the last few years (some without a game to their name).

I am all for introducing some younger players but casting this move as "restructuring" is BS. It would be acceptable if it involved delisting or trading some old or truly dud players but Schneider and Dempster are neither. If you cut through the BS, the one benefit Meredith presents over Dempster and Schneider is that he costs less.

I give this trade :thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown:.

I do agree this trade does seem a bit lop sided but I do believe it was mainly a salary cap issue and lets face it Schnider and Demster had stagnated alot in the past 2 seasons Schniders best season to date was by far his first and not only has he not gone on with that he hasn't even been able to match it. As for Dempster he has been struggling to cement a place in the senior side his whole career not tall enough to be a KPP not good enough to play in the midfield he strikes me as just a spare parts player.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying young Meredith is going to be a star as you say he may not even play senior football but he can play and is a very talented young midfielder. He was somewhat overshadowed by his more high profile teamates this year (Kruezer, Cotchin, Grimes & Our very own Veszpremi) but towards the end the season he showed why at 16 he was preffered to all of those as the only 16 old to play TAC Cup for the Knights in '05.

It might seem a little baffling to trade two premiership players for a second round draft pick but in terms of Salary cap it is far better value to play an unproven 18 year old who may be a star (May not aswell) over two players who have shown little to no improvements in three years.

As the previous guy said Roosy's hands were tied and with the re-signing of Jolly something had to give. It was Schneider and Dempster. That's the business of football. Hopefully Meredith can be a valuable contributor for us in years to come.

Sounds like Brennan to me. But at least Dempster can kick.

This trade will look very, very bad to us in a few years.

Can I borrow your crystal ball for next weeks Lotto numbers?
Roos referred to information released by Champion Data that concluded that pick No.10 in the AFL draft averaged just over 30 games for their career.
Betting against Meredith outperforming Schneider and / or Dempster is a much better bet than Lotto!

The trade is effectively Schneider + Dempster for Mattner IMO.

If you did neither of there would be every chance you would have ended up with Meredith. No need to lump all this extra expectation on the kid.

still can't believe you guys traded those two so cheaply - to a side who are in a similar playing ability to yourselves - you and the saints will definitely be fighting it out for a spot in the top 8, and probably the lower half of it - you just gave them a "free" leg up:confused:

if it was a matter of salary cap - seriously - how much could those 2 blokes be getting paid? can't be a huge amount - and where is all the money in your cap going? you are a very even side, with only a few players which would command massiveve cash - quite a few of which will retire in the next 2 years (hall, everitt, O'loughlin, Kennelly, crouch, kirk, Barry, matthews ) - it is still a very baffling trade indeed:confused:

i look at ur list and i really dont see how u needed to get rid of those two guys so desperately needed to cut those two blokes
If Jolly wanted more money, it had to be dug up somewhere. Trading Schneider and Dempster for a semi-decent draft pick must have seemed more attractive than delisting Mathews / Bolton / Crouch / Bevan or any of the other players past their prime for nothing. But I tend to agree that with the list Sydney has, there should be some salary cap space even once everyone is signed up.

without knowing any details, and i'm really just speculating, schneider and dempster were premiership players who i'm guessing would have been seeking upgrades on contracts signed pre-2005....dempster has continually disappointed at senior level, and been in and out of the side, while schneider, while being a more regular senior players, also had his flaws ... in schneids' case, he was probably the most attractive from st kilda/ross lyon's point of view of the three (schneider, buchanan, j bolton) the swans reportedly put on the table during trade week

the swans would believe they had several players in the club capable of filling the roles of both schneider and dempster and you seem to rate them a lot higher than what their career deeds would demand

I see Buchanan as a more attractive prospect than Schneider, though

My opinion is that Schneider is traded because of Moore's sake. The coaching probably thinks that only one of team can be on the team and they decided to go with the cheaper option.

If salary cap was really that big of a deal, we would not have picked up two recycled players in Mattner and Playfair (who will be a lot more expensive than rookies), nor would we have gave Jude a raise. I still think that this trade will hurt us further down the track.

Tapping Matthews to retire and divide his remaining salary in the salary cap for the next 10 years would have done the job instead :p
