Remember Scott Stevens who has become a solid defender for the Crows. Roos gave him a chance elsewhere! He could have just left him to die a slow death in the twos.
Or he could have played him.
You know instead of later trading away a first round pick for a clone in Teddy Richards.

As for the trade with Adelaide another giveaway.
We gave up Stevens & pick 31 and in return got picks 29 & 45.
Essentially we gave away a (then) 21 yo player who has established himself as a KPP at Adelaide for a 3rd pick.

Interesting note : We picked up Schmidt with pick 29, but I'd say its fairly likely he would have been still there at 31. With pick 45 though, we picked up Amon Buchanan (straight after we de-listed him), so essentially we traded Scott Stevens for someone who was already on our list!

This post is not only directed at you Scottwade but a general post for those that are still annoyed at the trade of Schneider.

You & others still persist in being totally negative about this but don't want to keep an open mind as to WHY Schneider may have been moved on, if you like, by Roos & co.

Roos would have made this decision upon consultation with a few others in the know don't you think. Many on here are saying that they are far more knowledgable on these matters then a bloke that turned around a bunch of ordinary players, under Rocket Eade, into a FEARED & RESPECTED premiership team, that has played in finals every year since his appointment & successive GFs. A feat that would have been unimaginable by ANY Swans supporter that yelled for Rockets head at the time, let alone the rest of the AFL competition. Even the AFL CEO came out & bagged the sh.t out of us saying we were a rabble of the comp & our style "WOULD NEVER WIN A PREMIERSHIP"!!

REMEMBER??

You guys & Andy are mates by the sounds of things because you write off a guy & his team before he has a chance to do something about the not so good season we've just had. I know who I'd like to go to battle with. Roos is a genius! He has done what NO ONE has done at any other club........EVER! Broken a 72 year old misery!

And you'll respond by saying that he can't keep reaping the benefits of that success for ever.

But I say..........YOU tell me what he has actually done wrong in 2008 & 2009.
The god damn seasons haven't even started yet & he has already failed!!

The bloke has earnt the right to do what he pleases with HIS team.

By the way....................say hi to Andy for me & tell him he has no place at the Swans!!

This is my final post on this topic.
I will re-iterate what I wrote previously
"Roos has been a very fine coach for the Swans, but that doesn't make him infallible and there is a big difference between coaching and list management."

The very example you raise above (Scott Stevens) is to my mind an example of an error in list management by Roos.
Roos traded a KPP for effectively a 3rd rd pick and then later used a first rd pick to replace him (Richards).

Your view that Roos coached us to a premiership (and therefore can do what he wants with HIS team) is not a response to those of us who query his list management/trading abilities.

I'm sorry, I don't want to get involved in this argument but I do have the need to make one point. Yes, you could say that the Scott Stevens trade was an error in judgement by Roos but there have been many other fine coaches that have made very similar calls, Leigh Mathews and the delisting of Craig Bolton come to mind.

roos is not above criticism, despite his delivering a flag and breaking the 72-year drought
but most of this is simply opinion, and yet certain posters have been unreasonably selective in taking umbrage

as i've said elsewhere, none of this is even particularly harsh criticism of roos, yet during trade week (go back and check the thread) there are various posters sinking as low as cruditites such as"f..k off roos" because of the schneider/dempster deal
and yetthere was barely a shot fired back in anger at those posters on behalf of "roos and his team"

it's a same to see such narrow-mindedness and ignorance among swans supporters

I don't think the Stevens trade can really be viewed as a mistake. Stevens was on the brink of getting delisted at the Crows. He was then fortunate that they got so many injuries late last year that he got his chance and equipped himself well enough to stick around for a bit longer. But it's taken him a long time to get to be a semi-regular in the Crows line-up. Despite a very solid 2007, I'm not convinced he's an automatic selection.

As for getting Schmidt anyway, the thinking was that Adelaide had him pencilled in for their pick 29. I believe it was known that Sydney were interested in him too. So by swapping picks 29 and 31, Adelaide knew they were probably giving away their chances to take Schmidt. Obviously they weren't that set on him or they wouldn't have done that trade.

And for anyone who interpreted my previous post as being an endorsement of the Schneider trade, it wasn't intended to be so. I just think that once the decision to trade him had been made, what we got was reasonable value taking into account what players of his level and age generally get traded for and taking into account the Saints didn't have anything slightly higher to trade for him.

I still don't like the trade. I think the expected value of Schneider is greater than the expected value of pick 26 (which takes probabilities into account). And type-wise I don't think we have an obvious replacement for Schneider. And even while I think he probably has stagnated at level below what he is capable of, I still reckon what he has been delivering is of significant value and would have continued to be of significant value for years to come - with the off-chance that he might wake up one morning and decide he wants to become the player he is capable of becoming.

It is also a little dangerous to compare what we got for him with players who want to leave their club. Clearly Schneider didn't and hence the Swans' hand wasn't forced into trading him just to get something.

Unless his comments were completely tounge in cheek,ROOS come across as both ignorant and arrogant in the Daily Telegraph re Schneiders trade.Regardless of what anyone thinks, letting 2 premiership players under the age of 25 go for a second round draft pick is disgraceful list management and he should be told so.Sick of hearing,But he coached us to our first flag in 72 years. He has got flaws like every other coach, coaching any grade of football in Australia. HIS gameplan is a perfect example. Mark my words these trades and the possible trading of Bolton will test the bond between the playing group and coaching staff. After the loss to Collingwood in the finals the next day he said there would be no wholesale changes and the current group deserved first crack next year as they had been so good for the past 4 years, then he gives away 2 premiership players for crap and Bolton would have went if adeal could have been struck make no mistake.Roos has car salesman written all over him.oh well at least Dennis Carroll will give him a job when he gets the lemonade and sars.

Yes Paul Roos has achieved a great deal and has earnt the right do what he likes with his team. I am certainly not against trading, but I still strongly believe that St Kilda got the better end of the trade deal, which, along with this talk about Roosy doing favours for a mate is really my only issue with the trade of Schneider and Dempster. They are premiership players and I believe are worth more than we received for them. You have stated previously that we are going to get a "gun" player with pick 26 - that remains to be seen. I highly doubt it, but you never know, a James Hird clone could be lurking there in the draft @ pick 26 (lets hope :D).

I definately dont think that posters on this board are that one-eyed that they cant see the value of the players that we managed to snare in trade week - Mattner and Playfair should fit in very nicely @ the Swans. Very happy with the efforts of the recruiting department.

Good luck to Schneider and Dempster, hope they both do well @ St Kilda. Im sure Schneider will have no problems, but it would be good to see Demspter improve and some regular game time.
