Okay since Roos has obviously done the unthinkable and traded 2 premiership players for ONE PICK! it's time for us to discuss which combination is actually better for Sydney, and why.

I'm still getting over the initial shock of such a dumb deal, but i'm trying to think positive at the moment. How did we go from trading geniuses on tuesday, to this? -sigh-

I'm very happy with Mattner, but not as sure about Playfair. He has potential, and he's big, but is he really better than Dempster? i don't think so.

:(

Paul Roos has obviously seen the Swans age problems and thought, "thats whats wrong with the Swans, too many young people" so he decided to trade away two guys who could have been at the Swans for the next 10 years for 2 players who are several years older. Somehow Paul Roos has managed to make the Swans age problems worse. I didnt think that was possible before today.

Pretty fair call. We deserve to be the laughing stock of trade week at the moment. Pick 11 better be a gem, and i'm praying White comes along like we're expecting. Weird feeling right now:(

The only reason i can think of as to why Paul Roos is doing this is he has just signed a secret deal with St Kilda to become their coach next season and as part of a 2 step process he completely stuff the Swans future and makes the Saints list strong all at the same time.

Funnily enough Playfair is LRT's mate. I'm in shock, I thought Playfair was prime delist material. I just can't fathom what's going on here?:eek:
Not really bothered by that trade, pick 44 is basically left overs. 50/50 trade:thumbsu: Don't get me started on the deal with the Saints though:(

Us Geelong fans are almost jumping for joy, the untradable has been traded. Who knows, might get a good player at pick 44, might not, it's sure as hell better for us than Playfair who was going nowhere. Geelong has done well with late picks so I'm happy with this. Saints deal?, yeah well, I'm not gonna bother trying to understand that.

Like i said, pick 44 doesn't bother me, Playfair whatever, but pick 26 for two 23yr olds is just.....mind boggling!

I think Roos has made it clear the Swans only intend to draft 3 players. Giving 44 in a trade cost absolutely nothing since it is the pick that would have been used on Bird. We just use the next one instead.

It's going to be a weird draft day for Swans fans. Usually we don't need to tune in until they get to about pick 50. This time we'll be all done by pick 26.

The mail is that the Swans have some salary cap problems. hence, trading two players for a draft pick. Jude Bolton remains unsigned and I hope he stays put. The Playfair trade is an interesting one. He's a NSW boy which is good but he has been seen as a bit of a gummby. I thought the same of Jolly before he came to us. Lets not knock Playfair just yet.

I don't think it's such a bad outcome for the Swans.

Our side for next year looks pretty interesting if we can get rid of some current players.

B: Jack, Playfair, Barry
HB: C Bolton, LRT, Mattner
C: Kennelly, Buchanan, Malceski
HF: O'Keefe, Hall, Davis
F: O'Loughlin, Barlow, McVeigh
R: Everitt, Goodes, Kirk

Inter: Jolly, Laidlaw, Schmidt, Fosdike.

Emg from: Moore, Richards, White, Brennan, Thornton, Brabazon, Bird,

Possibles from a defensive perspective depending what else we can develop: Ablett, Bevan

Out: Mathews, Crouch, J Bolton (I should note that I don't expect any of this to happen, but these outs are important if we are to improve our speed and disposal)

I'm fine with the Playfair trade. Pick 44 to get a Sydney kid back home. The more NSW people playing in the team, the better.

WHICH MAKES ME WONDER WHY THEY TRADED SCHNIEDER ROOS YOU SUCK.

Why the hell would Barlow be at Full Forward?

And Ablett is still easily in our best 22.

Because he's big, mobile, a nice mark and a beautiful kick for goal.

Arguably not at all and certainly not 'easily', especially if the young players come on like we hope/expect they can. Who would you drop from that team?

For Ablett I would drop one of:

McVeigh, Jack, Laidlaw, Scmidt, Fosdike, Mattner or Playfair.

McVeigh, Jack, Laidlaw, Scmidt, Fosdike, Mattner or Playfair.
McVeigh - I suggest he may become a good small forward crumber (if anything at all). Ablett is not suited to that.

Playfair - Key position player - Ablett is not suited to that.

Jack, Laidlaw, Schmidt - young players, future of our team

Mattner - we have just traded for him - far more critical in adding to our running half back line - Ablett is not suited to that.

Fosdike - Ability to get the ball more than Ablett. The only one that could be considered, possibly to give us a tagger, but Fosdike adds more to the midfield.

Obviously I wasn't suggesting that Ablett would come in and play the roles of the players I listed but I consider him more valuable to the team than all of them. Ablett is now our no 1 tagger and does a lot of hard work around the packs. I think his value to the team gets a little under-rated and we sadly missed him in the loss to the Pies.

If you don't think too much of Playfair, then why do yoiu have him in our best possible team. I don't get it.

You would have struggled to find a spot for Dempster.
And another question!!
Who's spot on the St. Kilda team does Dempster take???

Fisher??

I'm not too sure that he will improve the St Kilda team too much. In fact I'm not too sure whether he will get regular game time at the Saints either.

Agree with most of it. I'll consider Ablett/Bevan for Fosdike (gives us an extra tagger against the likes of West Coast) and to gloom Schmit into Fosdike's current role, Schmit has good ball-getting sense with better disposal (but obviously less stamina). I'll probably still stick with Magic in FF for now and Davis into forward pocket to begin with and make use of Barlow's ability and creativity to play on and get quick ball into the forward fifty (from the half forward flank), then swap with Davis when he's tired or the other side fully floods.

And yes, Barlow still kick for goal to show off his goal-kicking skills when he marks inside 50 instead of playing on (like he did last year) :D

Kirk is still our no 1 tagger. Ablett is a reasonable tagger but not great - sometimes he does well and others he is pretty ordinary. His offensive contribution is minimal.

The only reason I could see him coming into the side would be as a tagger. I'd prefer to see us develop a side without relying on taggers.
