Lyon confimed that he will be at the club in 2008 a long time ago.

It was a long time ago, yes.

And to this point in this time he's yet to sign a contract.

It will be interesting to see if we make a late play for King or perhaps look at taking him in the pre-season draft but at the moment we still lack depth in the ruck and I wasn't sure if anything had changed with Gardi.

Exactly right.
Anybody who thinks you are just getting a goal sneak will be pleasantly surprised.

However whilst he has good pace, he probably isn't as quick as at the start of his career, as he's had a couple of bad hamstring pulls, that have affected his explosiveness.

I've always rated him quite highly. I have visions of players like him, Buchanan, Matthews, Kirk, Bolton and Goodes just running rings around opposition midfields. He just seems to have that bit of class and can make something happen out of nothing. Even though we had a good second half of the season I reckon we've become a tad predictable and could do with a player like him to spice things up a bit.

He did seem to do his hammy a couple of times this season so that's definitely something to be wary off. I guess Dave Misson will know him well.

Dempster has actually quite a deal of upside.
He ran 2.91 for the 20m at the 2002 draft camp (4th quickest) and was the top rated tall in the beep test. He's 192cm and a good long kick.

He's been played primarily BP/HBF, but he has definite potential to play further up the ground.

Although playing in our premiership, he's not a Paul Roos dour type defender, so was in & out of the team.

Roos lack of confidence was typified by the fact that Dempster had a career high 22 disposals, 11 marks against West Coast in round 16 & was then dropped for 5 weeks.

Lyon knows his capabilities and if he gives him confidence Dempster could be a very handy pick up for you.

Lastly I'm not sure the Saints have done a great bit of business, I think we've managed to shaft ourselves all on our own.

Thanks for that information Scotty, you've probably increased our knowledge about Sean 100 times with that synopsis. Perhaps Lyon has earmarked him as the tagger to replace Bakes and Attard in the middle of the ground at the start of the season as that's a role that he's done successfully in the past and it sounds like he has the running capacity to cope with it.

It's certainly an interesting trade. I think we've won out of it but it does make you wonder why we're paying what seems to be such a low price for the two of them. Is it a salary cap issue, the clubs need to rebuild or something that we don't know?

It appears it was all a favour to Rossy.

Inter alia, Roos is quoted as saying "...Rossy has been hounding me for a while to get Schneids." and later Roos admitted that Demspter (sic) became part of the Schneider trade as a favour to both him and Lyon.

PS Forgot about Misson.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

More confirmation:

Schneider trade a tough call
October 12, 2007 12:00am

PAUL Roos has admitted trading Swans premiership player Adam Schneider to St Kilda last night was one of the most difficult decisions in his coaching career.

But in the end Roos believes it was the right move for both the club and the exciting 23-year-old goalsneak Sydney fans dubbed Schneiderman.

Roos also says the deal that saw Schneider, along with premiership defender Sean Dempster, 23, go to St Kilda for their second-round draft pick (No. 26 overall) signalled the start of a restructure at the club.

Sydney are also confident of securing a deal today for 24-year-old Geelong forward Henry Playfair for their third-round pick.

Playfair, who went to Sydney's Shore School that also produced Swans defender Lewis Roberts-Thomson, had a strong 2005 season but couldn't break into the Cats' star-studded 2007 premiership team.

The Schneider trade will reunite him with former Swans assistant coach Ross Lyon, who took over the Saints' senior coaching job this year.

"It's a difficult week for everyone; I don't like doing it but it is part of your job as coach and you have to take the emotion out of it," Roos said.

"You love all your players and it is very difficult, but I think at the end of the day it might be good for Schneids.

"That's what I spoke to him about on Wednesday. Probably with us he stagnated a little bit and that was the reason why, in the end, I was prepared to do the deal.

"We think him going to St Kilda might stimulate his career, so I though it was better for him to go.

"Rossy has been hounding me for a while to get Schneids.

"It probably signals a little bit of a restructure of the team."

Schneider, 23, has been a hit with the fans since his stunning debut season in 2003 which saw the dynamic goalsneak play in all 24 games, kicking a total of 30 goals.

But despite plenty of brilliant performances that followed, he was not able to consistently reproduce that form in recent seasons.

Roos also believes it was important with an ageing list that the Swans get back in to second round of the upcoming AFL draft after they traded pick No. 28 on Tuesday to Adelaide for classy defender Martin Mattner.

"We are mindful that our list is getting a bit older so it's good to have two more young kids coming in," Roos added. "As a consequence you have to lose a player you don't want to, but in the end I think it will benefit both Schneids and the club."

Dempster has also struggled to find consistency in the Swans' tough, accountable style of football since playing in the 2005 premiership team.

Roos admitted that Demspter became part of the Schneider trade as a favour to both him and Lyon.

After picking up Mattner, 25, it became clear Dempster would only have limited opportunities if he stayed at Sydney next season.

"For Sean he felt and we felt that with Marty Mattner coming in opportunities are going to be limited," Roos said. "Rather than hoarding players we want to make sure kids get a chance to play."

It sounds like we've definitely taken advantage of the close relationship that Lyon has with Roos.

I was in the middle of posting that article as you sent that.

Yep, I think we're pretty fortunate that Lyon enjoys such a good relationship with Roos.

To give credit to Roos, and it's easy for me to say that I admit, he does put the interest of his players first. As a result that probably goes a long way towards the excellent results that your team has had in recent seasons because the players clearly play for him. I suppose as a Swans supporter I would probably want him to put the club first but he's done an outstanding job and knowing him he'll get the best out of your team next year as well. Had you had a fit Barry Hall (**** ;)) this season you may have done far better than what you ended up doing.

Sainter, you and your fellow posters here at the St K board deserve credit.

You've just had an enormous win, but there is no gloating/trolling etc, merely a quiet satisfaction.

Well done.

My God this post sounds like a Roos/Rossy love in. :D

he's looking after his players you need to have more faith it took the swans 72 years to win a premiership.

it took him three GIVE THE MAN SOME CREDIT.

My God this post sounds like a Roos/Rossy love in. :D[/QUOTE]

Shneider and dempster great get for the club. Steven King signed last night hot mail it will be announced early today. Not sure what the saints have given up but when i find out it will be posted straight away stay tuned!!!

The Schneiderman has long been a cult favourite of many Swans fans which is why we're so upset over this, more than his absolute value to the team. He is a good young player but certainly the gap between his best and his ordinary games lets him down. He is capable of being a matchwinner though - grabbing 20+ constructive possessions and snaring a couple of goals. The main thing with him, though, is that he is capable of far far more if he decides to get himself properly fit. I've always held out hope that one day he'll wake up and realise just how good a player he really could be. I just hoped that the Swans would be the ones to reap the benefit.

As for Dempster, he seems to have all the tools to be a very useful player but has never quite been able to impose himself on games. If Lyon can instill the confidence in him to believe he belongs at AFL level, you might have got yourselves a very handy tall wingman on the cheap. While it's always a bit sad to see competent players leave, if this move is what he needs to kick start his career, I'll be very happy for him.

I am so excited by this deal. Not only does this deal provide us with depth it also brings across premiership experience which is in invaluable. It's not too often you manage to snaffle two premiership players still at the peak of their powers. I am very excited about this deal and if we manage to get Steven King I will be over the moon, once again a former captain of his club and a premiership player! Great work by Rossy Lyon and staff on addressing our weaknesses and taking steps to rectify them! :thumbsu:

LET'S DO IT FOR HARVES IN 08!

Yeah, I get the feeling a year with Sos as his coach will help Dempster no end. Just a quick question about Schneider - whos spot is he going to take? Milney? Xavier?

Milne definately I think there is still hope X and Raf can rotate through the midfield

Although having said that we have lost a couple of forward flankers

Is Milne contracted for 08?

Milne & Scneider to rotate thru midfield and forward pocket, and keep each other honest.

X is great value if fit - but cannot contribute if carrying injuries. He is great at either half forward or half back if up ang going. He can have his brother's spot at half back for mine.

i think its a great pickup for saints

Get king and I think you now have that extra that I thought you guys missed (if that makes sence)

In general the Saints fans are great so Im not going to begrude them some sucesses

Great deal for you guys but I think it had to be done.

I will miss watching him take 3 bounces and slotting them through on the run. He'll be a sainters cult hero in no time.

Very happy with the trades. I would of thought the swans would of demanded Liegh Fisher, as well as pick 26.

Excellent pick up for our team:thumbsu:We do need more depth.

Well earlier on there was talk about Leigh Fisher failing a fitness test up there. Perhaps thats why he didn't go. I would think though it would have been Leigh or the draft pick??

Not sure if that was official. Posted on the main board, not really sold on the whole Leigh failing a fitness test.
