As a general observation, dumping a video in the middle of a thread and expecting people to watch it is lazy. If you’re not prepared to take the time to explain what you got out of it, and why you think the points raised are reasonable, you shouldn’t expect anyone else to take the time to look at it. If you think the content is worthwhile, it’s your responsibility to highlight the aspects of it you think make it so; otherwise discussion devolves into a war of attrition where whoever has the most free time to watch random videos wins—and that person will pretty much always be unhinged.

Strange take.

It was posted in response to a quoted post, is quite clearly titled and is a TED talk hosted on youtube (hardly the domain of RWNJs). Given I am reading this thread I would expect the video to be relevant to the topic, which it is. Click on the link, see it has been viewed millions of times with a very high like/dislike ratio. It also clearly shows the length of time. One can figure all that out in less than 30 seconds.

The alternate is to not watch it because you know it is going to challenge your point of view. Or to expect others to take the time to write you the cliffnotes.

Regardless, it shouldn't be encouraged in a primary school classroom.
So what has been encouraged?

Were they being taught that cops are racist? Or were they learning about a movement and being taught to pick out the main messages of that movement, the better to apply it universally when they encounter messages in the media?

Is teaching kids Macbeth encouraging them to murder?

Discussing a particular movement and encouraging kids to write slogans like "Stop killer cops" and "Pigs out of the country" are two very different things.

Who gets taught Shakespeare in Primary School? Really?

How about we go back to teaching maths, english and a bit of respect...

Respect for what? Commissions, investigations, all that, we've pretty much taught kids that they should be very wary of institutions like private schools, the church, child services, and the police.

Right now I could not recommend that any minority kid in NSW go anywhere near the police because the police minister doesn't even believe racism is an issue, so nothing will be done to improve the situation, and any racism they encounter has already been denied by the guy running the ******* show.

Without the full context of this classroom exercise we can't say whether or not it is appropriate. Of course "Stop Killer Cops", or whatever, is probably going a bit far for the average vanilla Sunrise watcher, whose sensitivities must be protected at all cost.

NSW right now has a police minister who does not believe racism really exists in Australia.

Now, OF COURSE he doesn't speak for every cop, or even the state police commissioner. So OF COURSE it doesn't mean kids shouldn't go to the cops.

Personally, I'd suggest it's probably not an appropriate topic for Grade 5-6 kids - as most kids that age lack the analytical/critical thinking skills to truly understand and evaluate the issues, historical contexts, and viewpoints involved in BLM.

It is, however, a topic that would be covered in Years 7-10 despite the asinine protestations that schools must remain 'apolitical'.
