I think the right is going to cook it on this one.

Its not mmcc where half of them will be dead before the lie is up - this is going to bite a lot of them on the arse

I read the article but couldn't work out what part you took exception to or why this is the ring wing vs science?

It read more like Trmp being Trump and attacking an individual he didn't like

Well id have thought that was obvious.

Trump is gainsaying a man whos one of the top people in a field of top people

And the right wing news organisations getting behind him .....speaks for itself really - if they had any sort of morality at all they would be behind the expert and telling trump to pull his head in.

everyone knows trump is a w***er but that article came across as yet another women's day story

there is plenty of things to be angry about trump about. but a petty feud hardly rates.

Hes still getting the message out there that this isnt as important as it is.

people are still being very blase in the us as a result - the stupid shitgibbon and his bumlicking media are going to be responsible for tens of thousands of deaths.

he is a moron no doubt but I do question when someone is responsible for deaths and when someone isn't

during the GFC, it is claimed an extra 500,000 people died of cancer and 5,000 suicides in 2009 alone (https://www.spectator.com.au/2020/0...n-with-all-the-health-issues-that-will-bring/, https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/20...sed-500000-extra-cancer-death-according-to-l/)

Personally I feel we are doing a terrible job at protecting the vulnerable and elderly from Corona AND an equally terrible job at protecting the economy protecting society from mental health, domestic violence, suicide and all other health issues.

50 - 100 million died of the spanish flu.

Oh and heres another right wing dickhead who thinks science is for nerds

^^^^theres what the right say

Heres what the experts in the field say

Thanks by the way for proving my initial premise:

<<<Myth 4: Lockdown has to remain for 6-12 months

I understand that some of the economic modelling which has informed decision making have used annual models and have not been capable of examining smaller period of lockdown. Social distancing is especially important with COVID-19 because there may be people who are infected who do not have symptoms. This makes disease control much harder, and until we have a vaccine, all we have available in the toolkit is social distancing and travel restrictions, along with isolation of sick people and quarantine of contacts and return travellers. Studies show that school closure should be done early to be most effective. Even if we do not close schools, we can mandate online learning – we have technology and free online learning systems such as Moodle, so we can use these to provide education remotely.

China has demonstrated the feasibility of a short lockdown followed by phased lifting of restrictions. The graph below shows the success of lockdown in China, implemented in Wuhan on January 3rd, while the epidemic was in the exponential growth phase. Within 1 incubation period (2 weeks), cases start to fall. China began lifting restrictions on February 9th, just over 1 incubation period from the lockdown. They have continued to gradually lift restrictions, from a more manageable baseline position of fewer cases to track and contain, all within 8 weeks. At the end of that 8 weeks they are in greater control because they have far fewer daily new cases to deal with and can quickly identify and contact trace these. If the epidemic was allowed to grow, they would have lost control with thousands of new cases occurring daily.>>>

<<<<In recent days, a growing contingent of Trump supporters have pushed the narrative that health experts are part of a deep-state plot to hurt Trump’s reelection efforts by damaging the economy and keeping the United States shut down as long as possible. Trump himself pushed this idea in the early days of the outbreak, calling warnings on coronavirus a kind of “hoax” meant to undermine him.

The notion is deeply troubling, leading health experts say, because what the country does next and how many people die depend largely on what evidence U.S. leaders and the public use to inform their decisions. Epidemiologists worry their research — intended to avert massive deaths in situations exactly like this pandemic — will be dismissed by federal leaders when it is needed most.>>>>

I have no confidence in the statistics coming from China.

by right wing you mean any one who questions the lefts motives

Fresh from knowing more about climate scientists about climate change,

Knowing more about bushfire science than fire scientists,

Australia’s most intelligent person declares he knows more about medical science than medical scientists and disease experts. Maybe all these doctors, researchers and health professionals are in on some “leftist” conspiracy to steal freedoms away from “true blue Aussies”....:

Its almost like all those countries are making all those deaths up.

fun fact - many people recovering from the virus have reduced lung function - 20-30%

US President Donald Trump has retweeted a call to fire Dr Anthony Fauci after the nation's top expert on infectious diseases said lives could have been saved if the country had shut down sooner during the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Trump retweeted a message on Sunday from a former Republican congressional candidate who cited Fauci's comments during a television interview on Sunday and tweeted "time to #FireFauci."

.

The Republican president in the past has repeated critical tweets of officials or enemies rather than make the criticism himself. The retweet fuelled speculation Trump was running out of patience with the popular scientist and could conceivably fire him.

The White House did not immediately return a request for comment on whether Trump is unhappy with Fauci.

Fauci has assumed national prominence as a leader in the fight against the coronavirus. He has contradicted or corrected Trump on scientific matters during the crisis, including whether the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine is effective against it.

Fauci was asked on CNN's "State of the Union" about a New York Times report documenting early warnings issued to the White House about the novel coronavirus. The scientist acknowledged shutting the country down sooner could have saved lives, but cautioned that a number of factors were involved.

"Obviously, it would have been nice if we had a better head start, but I don't think you could say that we are where we are right now because of one factor," Fauci said. "It's very complicated."

Already a target of the far-right for his contradictions of Trump, Fauci drew more opprobrium after the comments.

Trump also denounced the New York Times story in several tweets on Sunday, calling it "A Fake."

Last week during the daily White House coronavirus briefing, Trump stepped in and prevented Fauci from answering a question about hydroxychloroquine.

Fauci, 79, has led the federal infectious disease agency since 1984 under Republican and Democratic presidents. Republican George W. Bush honoured him with the presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008.

Some polls during the public health crisis have shown Americans trust him more than Trump

I have genuine hope this crisis is what sets us back on the path to leadership and public stewardship of affairs based on science, compassion & reason.
The pendulum must eventually swing back from government by and for the ignorant and hateful.
I'm with you 100% mate. That's what I hope too.

Its becoming increasingly obvious that many govts have completely overreacted to this.

Its also clear that the correlation between lockdown and deaths is nowhere near as rigid as these govts would have you believe.
Interestly indonesia - who have little to no capacity for testing compared to their population, have logistical and structural problems that make lockdown just a phrase as its all but impossible - and their death rate from covid is unknown.

what is known is that their death rate compared to the same month last year is 40% higher already and we are halfway through the month.

your post is pretty much peak conservative - in your head you are the bearer of great wisdom - wisdom bestowed upon you from your hyperversity education at the school of hard knocks.

this transcends all traditional education facilities - doctorates and other specialists in the field are but mere apprentices to your worldly education and ability to slice through years of research with your home spun wisdom.

congratulations - you have made it as a star entry to the right wing vs science thread.

Perfect, you could pretty much end the thread here as we're not going to get another as perfect example of exactly what the thread is titled.
Nicely put :)

Sweden is paying the price for refusing mandatory lockdowns

While countries across the world were going into strict lockdowns, closing businesses and enforcing social distancing, Sweden took a different approach.

The Nordic country kept its cafes, restaurants, primary schools, cinemas and pubs open.

.

The country's chief epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said the intention was to ensure "a slow spread of infection and that the health services are not overwhelmed".

Dr Tegnell argued that it was important for a large part of the population to contract and recover from coronavirus to become immune from it.

A week ago Sweden's approach was drawing praise from conservative commentators around the world.

"If the COVID-19 pandemic tails off in a few weeks, months before the alarmists claim it will, they will probably pivot immediately and pat themselves on the back for the brilliant social-distancing controls that they imposed on the world," the National Review wrote.

"They will claim that their heroic recommendations averted total calamity. Unfortunately, they will be wrong; and Sweden, which has done almost no mandated social distancing, will probably prove them wrong."

But Sweden's plan has not worked.

Coronavirus cases there are rising steeply, even as the countries surrounding it are levelling off.

More concerning is the fatality rate in the country.

In neighbouring Norway and Finland, the fatality rate is 2.2 per cent.

In Sweden it is 10.6 per cent, nearly five times higher.

The concerning figures have prompted a group of 22 doctors and researchers to pen an article demanding stricter lockdown measures.

"As the virus spreads, it is necessary to increase social distance," the article published in Dagens Nyheter newspaper read.

"Elected representatives must intervene, there is no other choice."

The looser lockdown procedures haven't saved the economy either.

The Finance Ministry projected Sweden's unemployment rate will rise to 13 per cent and its GDP will contract by 10 per cent this year.

Both are to be respected equally. Their arguments to weighed up on both sides. Then 2 people from each group make the conclusion that we accept.
