Oh great more tolls..... Grrr.

That's what has happened today. A large group led by Janet Holmes-Acourt has won the bid.

Grrr.
Great stuff, why should non-users pay for a road you don't need and is bloody expensive.

Hmm on second thoughts it is in Melbourne so I'll but out of this one.

I notice in another thread you're a LIberal voter. You should applaud a decision like this,it's consistent with a conservative parties philosophy.User pays.

No. This wasn't set up by the Liberal Government. This was set up by the Labor Government. The Victorian Labor Party have broken a promise. They said that they wouldn't make the Freeway into a Tollway. Now look what they have done.

From what I've heard it gets down to two lanes at Thompsons road. Should be three right through with the amount of penisular commuting the future holds. Can only imagine the pressure it will put on the end of the Eastern every morning at the other end.

evo did say it wasw "consistent" with liberal philosophy - not that it is a Liberal Party idea in this case.

Why should you care?
I care because my parents have to drive on there to get to my brother's house which is on the other side of Melbourne. They don't want tolls, neither does my brother, and neither do I.

They could catch the train? I note that you most likely have no problems that people who catch the train instead of drive have to pay to use the infrastructure provided?

I thought you hated your parents, anyway what are they, free-loaders?

Too cheap to use the original toll road- citylink, which let me recall, it was a Liberal party initiative wasn't it?

I don't hate my parents that live in Ballarat, Jim Boy. Just my natural mother who lives in Melbourne, I hate.

Nice to see that as part of the proposal, a point conveniently forgotten by Suzi is the upgrade of public transport infrastructure throughout the corridor..no line to Rowville still, but, a number of stations are to be improved.

Another point conveniently forgotten by Suzi is this: It'll be cheaper along that road, than the full length of Citylink, which still has the ridiculous situation of tolling 2 previously made roads, the Tullamarine Freeway and South Eastern Arterial.

The sooner the bloody thing is built, the better it will be anyway..ever driven down Springvale Road? My god...that is a joke even on a Sunday!

Of course, the ALP has ********ed away the strong financial position it inherited from the Kennett government, PLUS all the GST revenue it collects, such that not it cannot even afford basic road infrastructure.

I hate User-Pays systems.

I think that anyone who agrees with user-pays systems can go and make thier own little country and not pay taxes at all. Australia is a community, and the taxes we pay helps grow that community.

Toll ways are a joke. A complete ********ing joke. As if driving isnt expencive enough already.
I will vote for that victorian opposition loser because of it.

yes user pays sucks. I hate it the way I go to the pub and cant put it on the taxpayers account. I hate the way I have to pay for my own holidays rather than just toddling off to Noosa on the govt. It really irritates me that Foxtel is user pays so I have to pay to watch the Hawks play, obviously the ABC should get all sporting rights. It sucks that I had to pay for my own car rather than just take one from the govt car pool. All the taxes I pay and I still have to pay for both private and public health. Its a disgrace, everything should be for free. That would help the community and make Australia stronger economically. You know it makes sense.

Suzi your childish arguments are a joke as usual. It a new road so why not have those that use it pay for it. I for one will probably never use it so why should I .

Your heros the Liberals put tolls on roads that already existed, I have to pay 2.40 to use the Tulla Freeway that existed long before citylink. But thats OK cause this end of Citylink is in the Labor heartland.

I don't have any problems paying for using the Tunnel or the Bolte Bridge as they are new roads, but the toll on the Tulla is a joke.

Although I sympathise with people who live / work in the area and will use the tollway (particularly when Bracks said it would be a freeway), it is good that there may be some improvements to public transport in the area.

When you consider the cost of public transport in Melbourne, especially for people in the outer suburbs needing to travel into town, you would hope at least some improvements are made to the very ordinary public transport we currently have.

That said, any push by governments to get people to use public transport in Melbourne is going to be one tough battle.

Will Bracks lose votes over the tollway? Yes.
Will people fall for Doyle's plan that he is going to 'renegotiate' the contract so tolls will be lifted? Hopefully they're not going to fall for that.

From a Sydney perspective (talking out of my arse about a Melbourne road):

1. That Doyle looks a nasty piece of work

2. All our new freeways are tollways. Why are you whinging?

I don't even think that's true. It seems that everyone jumping up and down about it are blinkered Liberal supporters who were never going to vote for Bracks in the first place, just looking for weakness to lay into Bracks.

If the decline in provision of public services was matched by tax cuts, then fine. But it isn't happening, so there is ample reason for protest.
So where's the money going? We ****ed all ours up against the wall with the Olympics.
