Analysis Scoring from kick ins

I read on another thread how poor we are at kick in strategy after opposition behinds.

This surprised me a little as I always felt we had some ability to carve up a team when we could structure up.

So I looked at 2024 (when we were average at best) and YTD 2025 (when we are good)

Over that period, goals direct from kick ins are as follows:

Top 3
Hawthorn 31
Adelaide 28
GWS 26

Bottom 3
Saints 13
Carlton 14
Essendon 14
North 14

I get it’s not a huge source of scoring overall but interesting to a numbers man like me! I reckon Keane is a big part of this, he takes risks which I love.

Maybe we should rush more behinds?

You are right about Keane. I reckon our scores from kickouts would have been higher earlier in the year when he was taking more of them. Of course, the brain-fade short-kick turnovers that accompanied them counterbalanced that somewhat. His howlers have decreased significantly lately, but so has our risk-aversion from kickouts.

Spot on. They were slightly higher early in the year helped by 3 in round one against the saints.

Just thought it was interesting it seems to be a strength of ours this year and last …. in the company of other good teams.

I think it’s decent ball users down back and thilthorpe and curtin pushing up.

I think we were being punished a fair bit with the “not 15m” calls earlier on in the year, but we’ve adapted to this rule better now.
Our marking is also improving with the likes of Curtin, Max, Worrell and Keane rarely out-marked, which helps us to run through the defensive zone better. Hell, even Laird looks like his marking has also improved!

I would be keen to see how many goals are scored against us from kick ins and where we stack up against the other teams?

Goals from kick ins are a representation not just of the guy taking the kick in but the entire ground. You could argue this is just as much about our forward 50 efficiency (which has been really good) because we are doing so much when we get chances.

We've had some nice coast-to-coast goals. Turnovers seem high in that chart.

Collingwood have the highest retention rate from kicks. We are not strong at this.

Our threat rating from kicks is high. We are more likely to score from kicks.

Collingwood's possession game is elite.
We are more direct and take less possessions to score. At the same time we are liable to turn it over.
