List Mgmt. Scott Clayton - joins North as Head of Player Personnel

Did he ever end up taking this dip?

(FYI players taken after Grant include Lachlan Henderson, Ben McEvoy, Patrick Dangerfield, Brett Ebert, Cyril Rioli, Robbie Tarrant, Harry Taylor, Alex Rance, Callan Ward and that's just in the next fifteen picks)

I hope he's not the one to make the final call on who we draft.
Was it a Claytons swim then?

The list managers role seems a bit redundant.

Luffy better knew this was the case when accepting the role and hopefully it's a mentoring role.

Some experience around the young bulls is a smart move. We haven't exactly set the world on fire in the last 10 years with recruiting. What is certain is that we're cracking in now and taking risks. Love it. Penny's dropped that we are a club that cannot afford to drift any longer with the vultures at the AFL.eyeing us off for Tasmania.

A list manager/recruiter with this guy's experience will have plenty of war stories - as those above attest to.

There is no problems with that - we all make mistakes and the best learn from them and keep moving ahead.

I like this move as it shores up our relative inexperience in this area.

My only question is why the appointment now - literally at the end of the current draft process?

This rumour has been around for a few months that this type of move was on the cards - why wasn't he at the table calling the shots?.

Was Clayton on some period of gardening leave like Brady Rawlings? OR is this a case of Buckley letting the 'juniors' run the show this time around to see how they went...he saw how they went about it and said shite ...we need an experienced recruiter in ASAP?

Unanimous choice, what happens after they get to the club isn't the recruiter's fault, etc

Wasn't Clayton part of the reason for the Dogs charge for the premiership? A fair few of them were selected by him I thought.

Edit: Looks like he was at the Gold Coast during that period. This isn't bad though...

B: Lindsay Gilbee, Brian Lake, Ryan Griffin;

HB: Chris Scott, Justin Leppitsch, Nigel Lappin;

C: Daniel Cross, Michael Voss, Jason Akermanis;

HF: Daniel Giansiracusa, Mitch Hahn, Luke Power;

F: Craig McRae, Daniel Bradshaw, Robert Murphy;

R: Matthew Clarke, Adam Cooney, Simon Black.

INT: Beau McDonald, Darryl White, Ryan Hargrave, Matthew Boyd, Dale Morris, Shane O'Bree.

Best 22 of Clayton's best picks.
Clayton has no right to claim anything about our 2016 premiership. He had one particularly good draft at the start of his time with us. He dined out on that for about a decade. There were many years of bad picks that followed however.

Clayton really rates the type of player who is lightly built outside players who are great as "win more" types when a team is up, but will be unsighted if the team is getting pumped. Names like Jarrad Grant, Jack Martin, etc.

Morton at #3 is even more criminal. That prick was scared of his own shadow.

1999-2009 Western bulldogs
2010-2017 Gold Coast Suns
2018-2019 west coast eagles

Brisbane prior to 99.

That's how I have his resume.

Edit: pretty poor selections taking a quick look.

"The Eagles confirmed on Tuesday that Clayton had would take up a newly created football, marketing and administrative role at the club. He will be based in Melbourne."

His previous role suggests he's more a sounding board than anything. Quite happy for luff and Finnegan to make the calls and seek him out for advice/report their reasoning to him.

He reports to Brady?

The worst list in the comp having serious salary cap issues on his watch
Made possibly the worst trade of picks in modern history

Lachie Weller for #2

Then went to working for the Eagles directly after gifting them those picks

He is has proven to be an unmitigated club killer

To be fair to him he had to pay overs to your young players to keep them from coming home and leaving your rabble

That is a fair point on the overpay of players. Doesn't excuse the poor draft picks trading (e.g. wanted Clayton Oliver and then traded back and missed out on him), handing out long term contracts to absolute duds, drafting players such as Jack Leslie over Zach Merrett and Brad Crouch.

We had Bulldogs supporters come to our BF board and warn us about him and then we got to see it all unravel as was fortold.

Simply put he makes more missteps than the average list manager.

Looking back at the dogs board around the time he left the consensus appears to be he was very good but stale given he'd been there a decade. He certainly failed at the gold coast project.

Fortunately he won't be list manager.
