Is Shirko actually hiding in the cubby house with Jen and the girls right now? Another utter capitulation under pressure.

Too bad he doesn't have an international junket to fly off to and be ignored at. He'll need an invented reason to leave the country again if this continues.

This is cowardly even by his low standards.

“It’s inexcusable. Other developed countries are so far ahead of us and the reason we are so behind is because the government last year didn’t buy enough vaccines. They didn’t buy nearly enough Pfizer and they didn’t buy any Moderna. It’s a comprehensive failure of administration I’m afraid.

“You can’t put a gloss on it. It’s not a philosophical issue or a policy issue where you have three options, you pick one and the other two might not have worked - this is just a failure to do the single most important job the Commonwealth has which was to get the country vaccinated.

“It’s hugely disappointing.”

Asked whether he’d seen a bigger mistake made, he replied: “I can’t think of one, I can’t think of a bigger black and white failure of public administration than this.”

Mr Turnbull said Australia was “never at the front” for Pfizer.

“We should have bought as many vaccines from as many makers of vaccines as we could. If we ended up with a big over supply of vaccine that would have been, as they say, a high class problem and we could then give surplus supply to PNG or Indonesia or the pacific - there are plenty of countries we could have shared it with,” he said.

No wonder the right always hated Turnbull. He tried to be a useful idiot for them, but he was simply not dumb enough to pull it off properly.

That's simply not the case. There's no evidence whatsoever that we are.

What we have is a unique media landscape. If the mass media protection of this government was turned 180 degrees, I guarantee this government would receive the mother of all hidings at the next election. They may not even last that long.

People simply are not aware of the morally reprehensible nature of the likes of Morrison and Joyce. They're not. They're not told about it and on the odd occasion they are, it's fleeting. It's not hammered home.

A hell of a lot of voters are simply not keyed into politics in Australia beyond the surface.

I will add the Liberal Party knows all this. It's why they neutered the NBN. It's why they give millions in public money to News Corp. It's why they actually tried to pass laws to force giants like Facebook and Google to hand over squillions to Australian mass media titans, which ensured they would.

It's a partnership, plain and simple. And it's very, very, very effective. Labor - or anybody else - cannot overcome it.
Fair enough.

Remove depraved and replace with ignorant. I maintain that we are sick though...we are becoming more like the USA every day. And that is not a good thing.

I think you both make valid points. We do have the unique problem for a western democracy of having a high concentration of media ownership - Murdoch (65%) and Nine/Fairfax (26%). What's particularly pernicious about this though - the Murdoch empire is as Cryptkeeper alluded to, largely responsible for the extreme propaganda that have corroded the minds of the American right, resulting in Trumpism and an irreparably divided country.

The same media empire largely responsible for the insanity of the Right in the US owns 2/3rds of the media here. So it should be expected that we will develop (and already possess) a lot of the undesirable traits and cultural decay America is experiencing.

And because of this media omnipresence, the warped Murdoch world view is largely normalised here, its a generational indoctrination. And what Bunk describes is also true. You have a lot of overall nice people, but otherwise politically disengaged zombies walking around croaking ''Liberals are the good money managers'' and pulling a lever for them every three years - but they can never articulate valid reasons as it why. Most people will fear loss and will act to avoid it rather than take a small risks with lots of upside. Labor and left of centre parties globally will constantly have to overcome this real human psychology, always to be aided abetted all the time by an increasingly powerful and toxic media landscape, perpetually fuelling and capitalising on people's fears.

Fair enough. I just get a bit frustrated because it seems like sometimes people don't recognise what is the real issue is here.

"People are idiots" "People are selfish" etc etc actually works in the LNP's favour because it distracts from what is, by far, the #1 issue in Australian Politics.

It's the ONLY - the ONLY - reason the LNP are in power federally. Their partnerships with major media.

They know exactly how heinous a lot of what they do is to much of the electorate. Which is exactly the reason why they, literally, pay major media to run what is (for all intents and purposes) an ongoing PR campaign for them.

Make no mistake, the concentration of major media means they hold tremendous power. And they will do whatever they can to keep the LNP in power because of the financial benefits. It's a simple commercial partnership.

People actually lead busy lives (we can argue about why for the rest of time, but it's a fact) and don't dig deep into politics like some do - such as those on a political forum like this. They see what they see and are busy with other stuff the rest of the time.

Again... the LNP knows this. It's all strategy.

"People are idiots" - some are. Most aren't. There's just a very effective PR system in place for the LNP.

"Why the **** isn't Albo running wild with this!!??" - he can all he likes. Pay attention. Watch. The major media ignores the Labor Party and simply doesn't air it. It only gives Labor oxygen when attacking it.

Almost every frustration people have with the situation can be sheeted back to this one issue.

Rudd knows it. He's dedicating a huge amount of personal effort to taking it on.

53% from a poll that is two to three weeks old said they thought he was doing an ok job of the pandemic - I would expect that to dive into the 40s now.
He's been a useless, nasty, corrupt, lying piece of shit PM for 2 years and only the monumental bushfire ****up temporarily dented it. I'll believe it when I see it.

Hope it is people have worked out to lie to pollsters.

Don't doubt you and I am aligned, what I am saying is that we are probably overblowing his popularity even in the polls (which you can take with a pinch of salt).

Some gross collection of likely Young Lib types will call for Malcolm’s expulsion from the party pretty soon I reckon. Just like they did with Fraser.
IIRC Fraser handed his membership to the party in disgust at what they had become after he discovered morals after his political career ended.

This overlooks the real root cause. It's complete ownership of the LNP by the corporate class, who also happen to own/fund the media. It's not an agreement between the LNP and the media. It's direction from the corporate boardrooms and large private owners. They tell the LNP what to do and they tell the media what to write, including funding the IPA to give a faux-academic-look to the idiocy which comes out of the media editorials.

Gerry Harvey, Gina Rinehart, Twiggy Forest, Clive Palmer, St whatsi-his-face who bought a coal mine for nothing. Plus a bunch of other board-members on big salaries who ensure the political party they fund and the media organisations they fund are in lock-step.

It's indirect corruption.

The Nationals are the biggest example of this indirect corruption. Their donors are big miners. Their voters are getting stiffed, but they have no idea because they consume media which is also funded by big mining interests.

If farmers knew how much they're going to suffer because of Climate Change and that the Nats want to exacerbate it, they wouldn't vote for it. But that's not the reality they see on the TV or in the newspapers.
