I don’t understand how people convert when they know what those churches are like.
I get people who were born into it and don’t know any other way, but it’s so clearly ******* weird and a total money making cult.
I’ve been tempted to have a look at the church near my house for investigative purposes but I can just see myself creating a scene when they instantly demand money in exchange for a seat in heaven.

one of my drinking mates in my twenties came from a family involved in one of these churches.

Our group used to tie one on quite regularly but we'd take turns to occasionally go to the "youth group" evenings. Made it look like he was proselytising and kept his mum off his back. Then we'd hit the pub/club etc.

A lot of people feel lost & alienated by the world. These places are very good at making people feel loved & valued which is very seductive.
When I met my ex-wife her teenage daughter was involved. Her mum, my ex had been a bit of a wild child (had the daughter when she was 14) & the daughter loved the security & sense of family she got there.
She was dating the pastors son, was in the music ministry, a mentor to younger girls & a shining light. Then her & the boy broke up & she was suddenly not getting asked to sing on Sunday , had her mentor roles taken away & all her besties were suddenly bitches.
She left not long after. We were quietly very pleased.
It’s just another con.
