Government staffer put on 'indefinite leave' after sending vile text message to female journalist
Bevan Shields16 December 2018 — 6:49pm
A government staffer has been put on "indefinite leave" after texting an expletive-laden tirade to a female journalist who recently criticised a federal MP.

News Corp journalist Annika Smethurst opened a text message from a Liberal National Party staffer last Sunday night that was littered with abuse, including the terms "feminist c--t" and "bitch". The staffer also wished the recipient's family died "of painful cancer".

The texts were sent to Smethurst after the award-winning journalist wrote a piece critical of Queensland senator Barry O'Sullivan's track record with women in politics.

But in a statement, Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the message was "accidentally and inadvertently" sent to the reporter when it was actually intended for a friend.

"The staff member was at the time on a day off from his work and was using his personally funded phone. The event had nothing to do with his employment," the Nationals leader said.....

In the message, the staffer said: "I thought my mum would write...no...hope her family dies of vicious cacel (sic) ... I mean that ... painful cancer for a vicious feminist c--t'.

"A c--t. Let her come to my home ... slap her on her bitch face."

Ipsos poll points to grim election result for Scott Morrison

Little wonder Bill Shorten looked so confident as he addressed the ALP national conference in Adelaide, selling a party "ready to serve, ready to lead, ready to deliver a fair go for Australia".

At this stage, the biggest political risk for the opposition is making its sense of certainty about the election a little too obvious.

The latest Ipsos poll commissioned by The Australian Financial Review, the last of a tumultuous year, won't bring much Christmas cheer for Scott Morrison.

The deliberate timing of the Prime Minister's announcement of Australia's new governor-general David Hurley coinciding with Bill Shorten's speech only emphasised the Coalition's desperation Jamila Toderas

Not only does a 54 per cent to 46 per cent split in favour of Labor signal a very grim election result for the Coalition in 2019, the trend is headed in the wrong direction – along with the Prime Minister's approval rating.

This is despite various Labor policies managing to create a raft of potentially dangerous groupings of disgruntled, alarmed voters.
The difficulty for the Coalition is it seems incapable of unifying this range of opposition into any sort of threat to Labor's dominance and, increasingly, the control of the economic and political narrative.

The deliberate timing of the Prime Minister's announcement of Australia's new governor-general coinciding with Shorten's speech only emphasised the Coalition's desperation to distract from the Opposition Leader's steady advance on the Lodge, for example.

That's even though the government is poised to claim credit for strong budget results in the mid-year economic outlook on Monday while warning of the threat to this record from Labor's "tax and spend" policies. Instead, the political payback for announcing budget virtue almost seems be operating in reverse.

A fast disappearing deficit is making more people more relaxed about government spending while wondering why they are not seeing more of it themselves.

Amusing that he's managed to irritate both the Palestinians and the Israelis with the recognition of Jerusalem. This is what happens when your understanding of middle eastern politics is derived from the bible.
Well at least he has achieved some balance

MYEFO 2018: Coalition $9.2b election war chest
By John Kehoe and Matthew CranstonUpdated 17 Dec 2018 — 10:03 AM, first published at 9:43 AM
A revenue surge from strong corporate profits and employment growth have the federal government's budget on track to be $15 billion better off than previously forecast over the next four years, arming the government with a pre-election spending war chest.

The government's mid-year economic and fiscal outlook (MYEFO) published on Monday reveals the government has locked in $9.2 billion of secret spending and/or tax cuts due to be announced between now and next year's election campaign.

The Morrison government is forecasting an underlying cash deficit of $5.2 billion this financial year, well below the $14.5 billion deficit forecast in the May budget and the smallest since before the financial crisis hit in 2008.

"The economy is growing faster than the OECD average and of all G7 nations, except the United States," Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said.

"As a result of the strong economy and the government's sound fiscal management, the budget is set to return to a surplus in 2019-2020 after a decade of deficits."

"The underlying cash balance for 2019-2020 is now expected to reach a surplus of $4.1 billion - almost doubling the surplus estimated for that year in the May budget," he said.

Broadly in line with expectations, the budget is forecast to shift into surplus in 2019-20, ahead of the so-called "balanced" budget of $2.2 billion previously tipped.

Medium term projections, which are less reliable than short-term forecasts, show slightly higher surpluses of $12.5 billion and $19 billion in 2020-21 and 2021-22.

Since the May budget, total revenue has jumped by $8.3 billion more than expected in 2018-19 and a total of $12.4 billion over the four years to 2021-22.

I think you’ve got the wrong end of the stick. You started by claiming a Labor government would mean “open borders” (never mind that no Australian government of any persuasion has ever had an open border policy), and as soon as I point out that illegal arrivals have actually INCREASED under Morrison and then Dutton, suddenly it’s all about Labor’s shortcomings???

If you’re not up to the basics of public discourse maybe you should refrain from posting.

I answered your point if you had bothered to read it. Just watching the Labor Party left wing fest yesterday. That is all they wanted to talk about. I keep hearing how this is a non issue within the Party. Didn't appear to the case yesterday..

Because echo chamber junkies like geelong_crazy honestly believe they are the silent majority.

Its sooo utterly delicious.
Did the Labor Party ever explain why the Milky Bar kid was knifed? It didn't have anything to do with the fact that he was not from any faction, and the faceless people that control the Labor Party could not allow such a situation to continue? Why was Gillard dumped? Never properly explained.
