Scott Morrison's surplus obsession is hurting the economy

MUNGO MACCALLUM. Australia plummets below Greece

At last Scott Morrison’s torpid government realises that it is in danger of being mugged by reality.

Not yet, of course – there are still a few peaceful weeks in which ignorance will remain bliss, in which wishful thinking may be preserved in the hope of another ScoMo miracle. But after last week’s report from the International Monetary Fund, it is no longer feasible to pretend that the Australian economy is in safe hands and can continue to muddle through without at least a modicum of intervention.

----
Even Morrison is wavering – he has suddenly discovered that surplus is not just an end in itself, but an economic tool – perhaps like himself.:D:D:D:D

In opposition this government warned us that we were going to be the Greece. Looks like on their watch they've managed it.

The only thing that is certain is that ScoMo is going to do nothing while Dutton turns Australia into a police state.

Like I said, not interested in the minutiae of tax brackets.

"Mediocrity"?

OK now you have displayed your ignorance. Embarrassing.

On almost any metric of quality you care to name, the Nordic states are top of the world. You couldn't get a more high-achieving bunch of countries.

You really want to continue this discussion seriously?

As to your other points - since when is size, or heterogeny a barrier to implementation of policy? What a weird thing to raise.

If your a talented hard working individual seeking to accumulate a large amount of wealth are you best off in a scandinavian country or Australia ?

The scandinavian countries are resource rich countries, with small highly densed populations. Our resources on the other hand are spread out much more widely both geographicaly and with a larger population.

Scandinavia also share social norms which allow them to succeed which we could only dream off. Their positive attitude too hard work is something to admire as they are a nation of lifters while we are a nation of lifters and leaners.

What a weird post. You seem to be saying Australia is the better place for people prepared to work hard but the Scandos have an unfair advantage because they work hard. And you still haven't explained why population size is a barrier to implementation of enlightened policy (or indeed, any policy).

Still hasn't provided evidence of wealthier and more educated people voting Liberal.

Wowee, onya Penny, keep chipping away at this

I'm tempted to say this could prove extremely troublesome for Morrison, but his supporters are such a bunch of barrackers I don't think they are remotely troubled by him associating with protectors of paedophiles.

None of the moral criteria they would apply to his opponents are ever applied to the side they barrack for.

End the battle of moral criteria..we all do have imagination and strong health awareness..

No it's very simple hard working talented people will accumulate more wealth in a lower taxing country.

I didn't say scandinavian countries have an unfair advantage I simply stated that one of the keys to their achievements is their attitude to work.

I still put Australia and the US ahead of the Nordic countries but I am making point that trying to copy their policies will not lead to the same outcome.

A country with a economy that is largely resource based with a large population has to share its resources around with more people.

A larger population usually means a more diverse population. What people in rural Queensland and western Australia consider enlighten policy is very different to what people in inner city Melbourne and Sydney consider enlighten.

And poor at grammar - see bold.

When did hard work or talent ever equate to wealth?

Replace ‘hard work’ and ‘talent’ for ‘inheritance’ or ‘trust fund’.

The idea that everyone has the equal opportunity to accumulate wealth and those who do not are not working hard enough and only have themselves to blame is the biggest load of s**t.

We need to start living within our means and this government has a returning to surplus.

are you for real?

all well and good that the govt has a surplus...now go tell the 20mil or so with extraordinary credit card and household debt to balance their books! good luck with that, it's the average Joe that is drowning in debt because the govt encourages the average Joe to spend money they don't ******* own, or have no means of ever repaying.

we're well past the "living within our means" stage. The only logical outcome is to burst the bubble and start fresh. The banks need to bleed and average Joe needs to lose everything to realise how stupid this entire system has become, nothing more, nothing less. Yet the govt is still sprucing house prices and you're talking about "living within our means."

Whenever he wants to talk about economics, he presses the "Dial A Troglodyte Cliche" button embedded in his skull, and they just come tumbling out in random order.

Considering Pell/Catholic Church etc, it won't be
