pendlebury is selfish :S ?

anyone can play back pocket and rack up the possies. ellis is nothing special.

getting the ball in traffic and dishing it out cleanly is another thing.

id rather murphy kennedy and thomas over ellis

pendlebury by a fair bit has a top 2 b&f finish in a good side, top 2 rising star and was chosen for representative team all of which ellis has failed to achieve.

Pendlebury easily. I'm not sure how anyone could possibly suggest Ellis is the better "long-term" prospect. Pendlebury started playing footy when he was 17, so I guess he must've peaked? LOL!

Pendlebury proved on Saturday night that he can mix it up with the best midfielders in the league, gathering 19 possessions, with 3 clearances, 3 inside 50s and 2 assists.... oh, and he was only on the ground for 54% of the game. He was fantastic in the middle, totally composed and just oozed class. Was also named the 5th best player on the ground by the Herald Sun experts.

He's already our best midfielder (which isn't hard I know), and he's only 20 years old, and been playing footy for 3 years. He will be one of the best midfielders in the league in a few years. Bookmark it.

Good debate. Pendlebury takes the points so far. He’s shown a lot in his first two years it is only this year oppositions teams are showing him the respect he deserves and he’s copping better opponents.
X for me has been slow to come on. His 1st year he basically didn’t play, last year he was “gifted games” for his development and this year he is just starting to make a contribution. He would be the 18th-22nd player picked each week. Ellis still lacks confidence in the hard stuff. His skills are good and he reads the play ok. He just need to back himself and bit more in one on one contests. This will come in time. Pendles is already there but I’d like to have another look in say 2 years when they’ve both played 50+ games. IMO, we won’t see the real X until he’s played 50+ games.

Ellis suffers as hes in a team with great mid field depth. If Ellis played with us he would spend far more time in the mid field were he would clearly over shadow both Thomas and Pendlebury. In the end I wouldnt mind either.

Yeaaaah no.

I don't think Hawthorn fans would want to see Ellis in the middle. Not built for it, nor is he ready for it IMO.

BTW: It's tough to overshadow our runner-up B&F in the middle...

(Pendles>>>>>daylight and southern hemisphere)<<<<<<<<Ellis..
and for everyone that says Pendles is soft and Ellis is'nt, Pendles averages more contested footy than Ellis, and also lays double the amount of tackles than Ellie....so who is the soft one...ELLIE is .

Anyone in this thread that has said Ellis is absolutely kidding themselves... Pendlebury burst onto the scene last year and played exceptional football.. Ellis is developing down at Hawthorn and I would imagine the coaching staff are satisfied with his progress

yes ellis doesnt get as much opportunity in hawthorns midfield due to their strength, and yes he would have spent more midfield time if he was with us, but how you can say he would clearly overshadow both thomas and pendlebury is beyondme. Perhaps he may, but theres no way of knowing. I'm very happy with pendlebury's progress and for a midfielder of his age i dont think it gets much better.

so why exactly is pendlebury's development so far ahead of ellis? They both went in the same draft, and pendlebury missed his first pre season due to injury. Could pendlebury just be the better player?
Ellis obviously spent his first year at school while Pendlebury was a full time footballer, then Ellis did his hamstring and missed his second pre-season. This year was the first time he's done a proper pre-season.

Pendlebury is ahead at the moment, but I don't think it's inconceivable that Ellis will catch up, the only thing holding Ellis back is his weight. Frankly I don't quite understand what the gushing over Pendlebury is about, he never seems to do much when I see him play.

how would high school interfere with a preseason? the vast majority of preseason is during school holidays.

I never said it was inconceivable tat he could catch up. who knows what will happen.

as for all the gushing about pendlebury i believe it is warranted. For such a young player he's done some ridiculously classy things. He turns players inside out, and makes some of them look like fools. He has brilliant evasiveness, probably the best i've seen. Other players with great evasiveness usually do this by breaking tackles. His strength is avoiding the tackle altogether. Add to this the fact that alot of the things he does shows he doesnt think like a regular footballer, he just does things differently (ie. in his first season he was on the ground, paul williams running past to set up the swans, and he just knicked the ball from his hands, handballed it off, and set up a goal. 99% of afl footballers would tackle)

He won me over on debut when he sat akermanis on his arse by simply sidestepping him.

LOL Pendlebury wont make it into Hawthorns midfield, just made it into Victorias. You blokes are kidding yourselves thinking Ellis is better. Although who really cares what others think, its in the eye of the beholder.

I'd take Pendelbury easily in hindsight.

Ellis is coming on OK, but really think Hawthorn supporters mark him a little too easily, because he hasn't done a whole lot this year than just be part of the play, and put his body on the line on a few occassions.

Plenty of time for him, but at this stage he is a long way behind Pendlebury.

hindsight is a beautiful thing. At the time collingwood was being riduculed for picking a player at 5 who would have probably slipped to the late teens, and that we could've taken ellis at 2 and thomas at 5. word was that essendon was gonna grab pendlebury before our next pick though.

I remember at the time myself thinking "is this another collingwood draft blunder?", cause we were notorious for those at the time, but so far it's proving to be a masterstroke.

4 years ago Pendlebury wasn't even playing footy... so if you think Ellis has more development in him you'd be sorely mistaken.

I can't believe this thread even exists, the two are so far apart it's not funny.
It's like comparing Johns with Franklin.

Spot on, Schreuders.

To this point in time there is NO justification for seeing Pendlebury as being anything other than well ahead of Ellis.

Ellis is much harder at the football but Pendlebury is definitely much classier and Ellis will neve been anything more than a hard at it defender.

Pendlebury is basically a very outside, unaccountable soft HF flank/wing type, with very good endurance, but poor acceleration and a mid-range skill-set, hence the comparison with Stanton is a very accurate one. :)

If your team is good enough you can carry these types of player ie. Essendon 2000 had Heffernan, Caracella and Blumfield.

If you have a very poor side ie. Carlton, these types of players, ie. Walker and Gibbs, really stand out.

Ellis has been very good and consistent of late. Showing what a decent pre-season and some luck with injury can do for you.

Excellent footskills and has a lot of time and composure with the ball.

Maybe a more even poll in early 2008, I dont remember.

As for current, Pendlebury has done nothing wrong on his progress to being an elite midfielder. Ellis has been hampered by injuries and his teams inconsistancy, he may still become quite a good player with a bit of luck don't think he will ever be comparable to Pendlebury again though.
