I think Pendles is the equal of ablett, a few people agree with me but not many and it baffles me. so hear me out.

in pretty much every statistic they are close to equal eg. disposals, contested %, clearances, tackles.
pendles even has an edge in some of them.

the biggest edge ablett has on pendles is his goal tally, but i believe that pendles far superior disposal efficency evens that out. (off the top of my head 77% to 65%) pendlebury had the best efficiency from clearences last year and barely bombs it forward, but abletts clearance efficiency isn't up with him and he dosen't always hit his targets.

of the elite mids pendles is without a doubt the best disposer of the football and that also means he is one of just about three mids that get tagged every single week , pendles, ablett, watson and a few half backs but they arn't in this convo. so you cant say ablett has an edge because teams put more time into him, because pendles was the only player that had a tag every single week last season (only because we stupidly didn't tag ablett)

and my last point is that pendles in definitely more helpful in defence and is often a bailout for us because he will never just bomb it out of the 50 because he's always so composed. ablett dosen't defend a whole lot, not saying that its a massive hole in his game because i know he is a superstar but pendles has that string to his bow over ablett.

if i was forced to rank them i would say pendles has a slight edge. but i'd say about equal.

so pendles=ablett? please tell me some other people see it!

Until Pendles can consistently hit the score board like Ablett jnr does he won't overtake him or be his equal. But he is a close 2nd.

Pendlebury is a colossal player. Has to be classed as number 2 in the game. Even on this board I doubt you'll find anyone that will rank him above Ablett.

where as Pendles came in as a straight up midfielder so he may lack that 'goal sense' people crap on about.

Pendlebury is a pure midfielder, moreso than anyone in the competition. His game is perfectly matched to be a midfielder and nothing else. His handballs out of traffic/clearances are far more damaging than Ablett, but he doesn't have the same breakaway pace, or goal-sense as so often mentioned. I would however say at this time Ablett is mildly ahead of Pendlebury as a midfielder, purely because he consistently hits the scoreboard. Whereas Pendlebury's damaging possessions only have a chance of hitting the scoreboard, ie. one is a certainty, one isn't.

I personally hate when people compartmentalize players, saying X is the best player when truly I feel it's unfair to compare two players of entirely different positions (say a KPD to a midfielder), which means when it comes to saying if Ablett is the best player or not, I generally just shrug off the question. I will say suggestions that Ablett is the best player of all time are laughable and seriously piss me off. Great player? Sure. Best player? Get yer memory checked.

Gaz is a better mark, better runner, stronger core strength and a more reliable goal scorer. He has the X factor that Pendles will never have.

I love Pendles and I think he is top 5 in the comp but let's be honest if we had Abblet and they had Pendles we would all be saying he isn't even close to Gaz. What he has done with the Gold Coast is amazing and it is a privilege to watch him dominate every week.

x factor is a strange concept, because pendles will always step up in the big moments just as much as ablett. but he dosen't step up with bursting out of packs he just glides out of packs but still is just about the best player to turn it on in vital moments.

I was thinking the other day that it is unlikely that pendles will win a brownlow in his career with Ablett dominating every week and Selwood bring the umpires' pet.... And Swan, beams, sidebottom, etc all stealing votes of pendles every year.
If he doesn't win one I'll be shattered... He's a once in a lifetime player like Ablett and even Swan and deserves at least one.

however if we were down by 5 with 5 minutes to go, id back pendles to drag us over the line!

yeah he won the award given out by the coaches last year, but just can't seem to poll what he deserves in the brownlow due to our midfield being so prominent!

I think it's very, very close. Pendlebury has to have the edge in marking being I think 8-9 cm taller and this shows in their career marking averages with Ablett 3.3 Pendles 4.7.​

Ablett gets an extra 4 possessions on average but I reckon Pendles uses it better because he assesses better. Ablett half a goal more but Ablett has a ping first option, I'd like to see how many more Pendles set up.

Overall Ablett has a slight edge but Pendlebury is 4 years younger and has just entered his peak so who knows what he can do in that time, he could catch him.

But some people rate Ablett the best of all time already so it's a fair ask of Pendlebury to match, can Pendlebury win a couple of Brownlows and captain a flag or two in the next 5-6 years and he could lay claim to being one of the best of all time as well.

Brave man to put it past him at this stage, I reckon he's got another level in him once he grows into the captaincy. Ablett now but too early to call overall.

He does. The whole football world thinks Pendles is a superstar. Nobody has ever criticised him, and even Ablett early on was criticised. I can't even think of any other players who have never been criticised haha.

he never gets criticised and he does get praise but i constantly hear the media rate selwood and dangerfield ahead of him. it's a fair opinion to not have him equal with ablett, but to have those guys ahead of him is just a bit bizarre to me.

Selwood is far too inconsistent, it's bizarre how highly rated he is. His best is fantastic, on par with Pendlebury or Swan, sure, but he produces it far less often. Same goes for Dangerfield, except he's even more inconsistent and has been categorized by potential for years now, not his actual output.

Yep took the words out of my mouth. Selwood is a very good player but please look at the amount of times he gets blood ruled because he goes on hard like a battler but Ablett, Pendlebury, Swan do the same thing and nobody can lay a hand on them and they scoot off. Whereas Selwood is on the ground. How many times do you see a great play set up by Selwood compared to the above or Stevie J. He's not the same class and as for Dangerfield he has a long way to go before he belongs in this company. Relies on speed which is a worry, ask Juddy. Not in these conversations for a long time.
