Where have you been the last few years?

We’re a basket case, the club has treated the fans with contempt and like fools.

We only get a glimpse of this ineptitude and are p!ssed off, imagine those on the inside like players who would be in the thick of it. Having to deal with the idiots on a daily basis would be enough to get even the most passive person offside, especially someone like Pendles.

If he doesn’t feel like he’s getting a fair deal out of it, why would he want to stay in a toxic environment that is still ongoing. He owes the club nothing.

So basically it’s a storm in a teacup and people are getting worked up over nothing.

So does that imply he's only going around for one more year?

His actual quote is a little ambiguous and it's hard to tell if he's talking about Collingwood offering him a coaching job or moving ala Hodge.

"Hopefully we nut something out soon ... but if they want to offer me future coaching gigs for a couple of years' time, I'll have a look at it."

Such an agreement would be similar to the one that saw Hawthorn premiership hero Sam Mitchell finish his playing career at West Coast before joining the Eagles' coaching staff under Adam Simpson.
 
As has been mentioned, he doesn’t need an agreement built in now to get a coaching gig in 2 years time.

It sounds to me he sees himself playing on for 1 more season. Unless he is prepared to play for around $400k, I think both club and player will come to an agreement on what’s best for the club. If we could get something from GC in return that helps secure Daicos, we should do it.
 
Happy with Wright pulling the clubs player payment strategy back into line, should have happened years ago. We've already lost some of the clubs future talent. Letting the best player at the club know exactly what he is worth is the best way forward....

IMO I think the media is going the click bait angle (Is anyone really surprised)

After listening to the interview it certainly sounded that he was confident he'll be at the Pies for the rest of his playing career whilst wanting to look at other clubs when starting his coaching career.

When Wright was at Hawthorn over 30's were only offered one year contracts, and even free agents like Mitchell, O'Meara and Wingard were only signed on for 3 years. When he left no-one was contracted past 2023. Burgoyne was re-signed 7 or 8 times.

I haven't listened to the interview but read the article about it SEN which gave a few more quotes than the Fox Sports articles. I took it that his preference is to stay at Collingwood for the remainder of his playing days and then go to another club to start a coaching career. As it stands things have been slowed due to Covid and pointed out given his age and the stage of his career younger guys and sorting out the coach have higher priorities. But he has an offer from the club and they are working it out. It sounded like if the pieces fell certain ways (i.e. we wanted to move him on before he was ready to retire) he'd be open to moving to another club in a Hodge or Mitchell scenario with a player to coach type contract. But they were a long way off considering that option.

It's a storm in a teacup from media who are looking for ways to keep the narrative of instability at the club going and spread it to the playing group. Personally I can't see the club moving him on. Given his age I doubt there'd be much value in moving him on and the value he brings as a senior player for our young playing group whether he remains captain or not would be quite valuable to the development of the group.

I read it as Pendles only sees himself going around another year because of that, he said the next contract sees out his playing career.

Maybe the Eddie and bucks departures and salary cap debacle and now the ongoing board disgrace have loosened Pendles commitment.

Definitely still feels toxic to me.

I don't think that. I read it as he is being realistic. He's 33 (or will be next year) and will be finishing up in the next few years, maybe even next year. So he is thinking of what comes next. He also doesn't know who the next coach is, maybe whoever it is comes in and decides they need to move him on (I can't see that actually happening but the future is never certain). My read is Pendles' intention is to see out his playing days probably on a year to year contract and then move to another club to start a coaching career, however he is realistic to know that things may fall another way and he would be open to moving before the end of his career on a player to coach contract in that circumstance.

Yes it does. If he went to Carlton and got them over the line in a final or helped a top four team win a flag that would greatly diminish his standing in my eyes.
