Didn't he pull of the Carey/Longmire coup all those years ago?

I'll pay that, although was he even the RM? I thought he was just the footy manager. Did he identify those blokes or just entice them to sign???

Every recruiter has had some good picks, if you throw enough mud at the wall, some is bound to stick.

No he was only in admin back then I think , just a couple of kids with pretty good junior reps and took a punt.
As far as I am aware that was the last coup he has.

Umm no, we drafted him because he can play football. His basketball background is mentioned because he didn't play football for 4 years because of it.
Not entirely accurate, represented his school in those four years (Catholic College Sale)in the grand final of the country section of the HS shield and was voted best afield in the school's 2004 victory despite not playing regularly during the season.

Top thread - Should be bumped any time anybody posts straight after the draft that a team drafted a player too high.

Lesson of this thread? None of us know anything. If we are ever right on a call like this, it's more likely coincidence than expertise.

I slightly disagree with this. I know nothing. Lots of us don't. But there are a number of guys who watch a lot of U18 football who post here who do. You just have to pay attention to who you're reading.

Look, I'm one of the guys who most around here would consider to have a somewhat informed opinion.

But honestly, not a single one of us - Not even the absolute best of us - Has anything on the recruiting staff of an AFL team... Well, maybe Richmond or Freo, but not of a good team. ;)

Coincidences and obvious calls flatter some of the amateur opinions that we have, but honestly, we essentially know nothing in comparison to AFL recruiting managers on the whole (the professional breed, at least).

But that doesn't mean you know nothing. Sure, (hopefully) compared to the recruiting departments who should be pulling in knowledge from a number of experienced full-time junior footy watchers you don't know as much. But if someone has been watching a lot of U18 football for a lot of years, seen who and what types have been successful, and is watching the current U18 games, to say they have no knowledge is surely wrong? Surely you have far more idea than plenty of us - and the media?

I mean, there have been some damn good and informative threads predicting where guys will go. They're never right, but they're often around the ball park. And sometimes some of your calls are as good or better than the clubs on some players - just as you get others wrong that they get right. To tell those of us who have only these posters as a conduit or vision into the potential draftees seems very sad.

You're taking a turn of phrase way too literally... My point was just that we all sit here fuming or gloating about the players our teams drafted when we don't really have enough information to form an opinion yet.

No, what I'm saying is some of you do have an idea. It may not be quite as good (in general) as the clubs, but its light years ahead of where I and most of us sit.
But then, I can't remember any of the respected posters slagging off a player taken in the top 20. Sometimes you'll point out risks in players, but they usually have pretty big potential upsides to compensate. I agree anyone simply slagging off a selection without any knowledge is silly.

Although I would say that its ok if you critisce the club's style of selections, or approach, rather than saying an individual players is no good or worse than player X.

IMO, this guy will be no good, i hope he proves me wrong, collingwood picked him up because of his athletic/basketballing background, thats all good if it was the NBL, why do Collingwood draft so bad, e need Greg Miller or sumone like that to steady our draft/trading negotiations, cos they are just ********.

Its been a while since BUT what do u think now?
pretty sure u have got this very very wrong!

bahaha, this thread is classic! amazing what has happened in the last 3-4 years. Pendlebury is justifying his selection at #5 in that draft, and Jobe Watson is not only making it as a midfielder, but looking set to explode. good for a laugh this one :)

I don't know about Watson being set to explode this year. He has been in the system for a long time and he is what he is, a good solid midfielder that gets his own ball.

Pendlebury isn't just justifying his position at number 5, he probably should have gone number 1 and most would agree is proving to be a better player than Murphy.
