I've heard some rally big wraps on this kid on the draft and trade boards he's excatly what we need. he has very good hands and leads all day this is something that we have been missing for ages and his also got great hieght and weight. thoughts?

Oh look, Im glad to take the chance on him. I don't mind at all. I trust Wells' judgement.
But I just hope he doesnt go down the same path as henry or charlie.
His TAC goal kicking record was...well...terrible. I know that we havent had success in teaching players to kick in the past so I am sceptical.
That said I hope he has every success and becomes the number 1 player in the comp.
My thoughts anyway

So your idea of "by all reports" is your personal view of his kicking which you quote as being terrible. A goal kicking ratio of 19/17 and general effective kick ratio of 80/28 (TAC 2007 season stats) is in your opinion terrible. Its probably similar to that of Travis Cloke I would suggest. I've seen the kid play a few times and he brings a lot more to the table than goal kicking - sure he's a forward and you want him to score goals but he's not a FF. I think you need to add a bit more substance to your comments if you are going to bag one of our own - especially before he even plays a game for the club. But I'm glad you wish him every success. Lets hope all the new young recruits get the support and encouragement they deserve - they will take time to develop but I think we managed to recruit guys who will work hard to succeed rather than relying on fancy skills which made them look like stars in the juniors.

And why does everyone have to make comparisons to Henry and Charlie?

Ok, my point is, he kicked on average just over a goal a game playing as a full time forward.
Henry Playfair has a great set of hands and would have the same goal kicking record in the AFL i think. Or roughly that anyway. Sounds a worthy comparison to me.
Do you have his goal kicking ratio?
Goals and points? Because from memory, the numbers were close to even.
Bring that stat out

So your basing your opinion on one year of football? Over the two years Scotty has kicked 29 goals 21, an average of over 50%. While that isn't flattering it shows that he has a lot of improvement in him.

Infact the other factors in his game are very hard to come by in big men. He has a fabulous set of hands, amazing endurance and running ability, and a great nack of finding space. Like a lot of people said he plays a very similar game to Reiwoldt.

a lot of players coming through the system struggle infront of goals. Most don't have a very good accuracy. They are drafted for other abilitys. After all you can teach Scotty to kick on goal, you can't teach him to have sticky mits or give him footy smarts.

People will talk about Kent never being able to kick straight, no matter how much we tried to teach him. Scotty is different. By the time Kent was found out he was to sted fast in his action. Its very hard to change something that you have been doing all of your senior footballing career.

Scotty as a 17 year old can change. From now on he will develop very quickly and will change a lot of the way he plays. This change means he doesn't have any bad habits and his kicking will iron out.

Mind you pre draft his coach was very forward calling him a "superstar' not many coaches give that accolade willy nilly. He mentioned that he is also a very hard worker and is "very coachable". If he transmits this into the GFC he will develop a lot quicker than many other players.


SSP stop being so harsh on this bloke, he is a prodigious talent and one that we are lucky to get so late in the draft. Come back and 5 years if he still struggles to kick. But i would think that by the end of 08 we will see a much improved Scotty Simpson.

henry playfair does not have a great set of hands at all. and he only kicked 15 goals in 18 games in 2005 which was his best year for us.

In 2005, Henry was a lead-up CHF and he played very similarly to Ash Hansen. I personally thought he had a fantastic set of hands for a big guy and hoped that if he would learn to kick, he could become quite good.
I just hope this kicking doesn't become a problem with Simpson in the same vein because from how everyone else describes him, he has all the other attributes down.

The only person seeming to make it a problem is you. Its still not clear what your issue is, are you saying he can't kick, doesn't have enough shots on goal as a forward or has a bad conversion rate. There is no evidence to support any of these points. Have you even seen the kid play or are you forming an opinion on a single stat that you have seen. I wish pple would realise that footy stats only tell part of the story.

Scotty's goals per game are similar to NAB's this year approx 1.5
His conversion rate is >50% - hardly "terrible"
The number of attempts on goal depend on how and where he plays. As a lead up forward he may be providing more opportunities for other players rather than having the shots himself.

I think you should just give up on this point and look forward to him being a good player for GFC in the future rather than making generalised and unsubstantiated comments about a new recruit.

I think that Simpson will end up being the best player we drafted for this year. Has great tools that could be developed into something great.
 
Listen, Im just saying that i think his kicking statistics are poor, and they are. There is evidence to back it up. I dont know what your problem is to be honest.
I understand that he has fantastic abilities in other areas, but there is no getting away from the fact that his kicking is poor. All I pointed out is that in the past we have had little success in fixing kicking actions and hope to god its different this time because i obviously wish this kid every success.
I think its ridiculous that all we are allowed to do in a thread about a player is look at the positives.
We arent richmond.

Didn't i hear somewhere that the club had to teach Matty Egan how to kick?

And look how he turned out. All Australian CHB. And has a decent kick on him.

Geelong must've done something right :thumbsu:

Matty is a fabulous kick. I reckon because he was a blank slate (i.e no established bad habits or poor technique), that makes a bloke easier to teach.

No idea whether this kid has a poor technique or what - obviously at 17 he is still in development mode and any bad habits can be fixed more readily than someone who has been kicking the same way for years and years (i.e Kingsley).
 
Can someone please tell me how did scott play this week in the vfl he got 3 goals but did he look impressive?
 
I think we will be doing very well if one of Simpson, Kangars, Laidler or Mckenna make it as a quality forward at AFL level. They are very hard to find.

So far Simpson has shown to be the most likely at AFL level, especially as a Tall Forward.

He was great in the VFL yday. He kicked goals and lead hard up the ground as a CHF type option. As i said in an earlier post, he has great hands and that showed. He seems a one touch player.

He presents well and will always give us an option.

Laidler also looks likely to succeed. He has really impressed me. Seems hard at it and has a good penetrating kick. Think he will play HF/Midfield as a rotating player.

Kangars has a pretty big hill to climb to make it, and will be a definite 2 year option. Has a lot of work to do.

McKenna Has shown signs, but again will take longer to develop then Scotty Simpson.

i guess, the point of this is to say get on SS bandwagon early.

i know leigh tudor is very impressed with him and i think with bombers comments of him trying and playing young players i think it would be a fitting result to see young scotty simpson get rewarded.

he has the work rate and the hands to play afl and even the body. game knowledge and skills would let him down tho
