They clearly are ill informed about the enigma that is the Q9.

I seek enlightenment Master Fugsy.

What is the Q9?

Geelong boy whose contract talks with North have broken down. He is only 25, seems a good option to add to the backline mix since Gillies hasnt really come on. Would he be worth a nibble?

He's going to go where the money is, if not stay at North since the contract breakdown is about the number of zeroes. So not us.

You dont think we will have any spare $ with Drum, Mooney and a couple more retirements in the pipeline?

Not if you factor in the increases in contract value of the 09 draft plus any staggered value increases of others in contract. GWS will no doubt be throwing out blank cheques, and we'd almost certainly have to trade out a highly paid player to be able to trade in a potentially highly paid one. I doubt Drum was on big money and Mooney's last contract was most likely under market value since he would surely have been one of the "pay cut to stick together" guys.

Whilst Im all for the club getting better and that always includes the option of bring in players from outside the club, I'd much rather see the war chest, whatever it is at right now, spread amongst those already here - both established like the Sel's of the world and the up and coming - Bundy, Mitch, Vards et al....

I just think that intrinsically enhances the bond between club and player and that that is going to be harder and harder to maintain going forward with Free Agency and cashed up expansion teams....

just my opinion....:D

Go Catters....

Disagree with that.

Mooney Milburn (plus half the salary of whoever takes his spot on the vets list next year, probably Chapman) Ling and Ottens would all be on very good coin, well certainly Ling and Ottens would, and Milburn would have because half his salary was outside the cap anyway, that's a lot of salary cap room cleared, and more to come over the next 2 years with more retirements. Drum was on the min but the rest create a fair chunk of room, particularly if the club is prepared to backend contracts on any recruits in full knowledge that around 2014ish we'll be struggling to pay 100 % of the cap anyway. Certainly pay rises for the 09 group plus long term contracts for others will take up space but not all of it I'd say. Although the club may well want to set aside money in the cap for when free agency comes.

Anyway, as regards Thompson, worth talking to his management but that's about it. Wouldn't be offering over the odds particularly since he's now 25 and we really need younger defenders if we can get them. His role is also largely filled by Lonergan for the next 3 years anyway. I would like to see us bring in some defenders if we can though, but preferably some guys 20 or 21.

Even if you took all of that into account, GWS will move heaven and earth to get a few more players in the 22-27 age bracket in order to avoid the GCS pound-fest that we've seen this year, and we will not be able to match any offer they throw out - if you look at the overvalued contracts GC gave to all of their poached players, GWS will be bigger due to the even greater need for immediate competitiveness.

I dont agree with that. For one I don't think the GC season has been a pound fest at all.
In fact I can't see how they would have got games into their kids to see if they are good enough if they had more experienced players.
I think they had the mix perfect.

GWS will cop far, far more floggings than GC.

On the actual topic. Thompson does nothing for me.
He wouldn't be on (or deserve to be) more than 300k. We could get him if we wanted. But he's just an ordinary backman. Disposal under pressure is questionable too. Add to that he seems to be a bit of a drongo. Pass.

Someone on the north board said he should stay loyal because they gave him a lifeline. We were going to take him late, they jumped the gun, so really North could have cost him a flag in 09. Although realistically I doubt he would have forced his way in ahead of Scarlett, Taylor or the skipper.

He's a pretty good player but if he was coming to Geelong he would be vying with Scarlett for a spot in the side as the 3rd tall, enough said. If he stayed 25 for three years and was available in 2014 he'd be handy then :p

I'll go against the majority and say we should look at him.

He looked very 'Scarlett' like when he played VFL for us - rebounding out of defense etc..

Playing at North with their shortage of talls has meant he has had to become a negative type defender and thus his style and flair has had to be curbed.

Experienced big bodied key defender with an up side who is at his prime age, should be looked at.

The move to North had a real negative impact on his development, I have no doubt if he'd stayed he'd be a much better player today.

Pass, unfortunately.

How did it have a negative impact on his development? If anything I think it fast-tracked his development as he got the opportunity to cement a place in their backline early on that he wouldn't have got here.

Anyway, Brad Scott likes him. He'll re-sign with North.

I thought Geelong's policy was not to recruit sniping ****wits......

OK...maybe thats a bit rough.....anyway....

You might gather I am not a fan.

He is a good solid player who has done very well at North.

If i could get Laidler and Thompson back the cattery i wouldn't hesitate for a moment as they are precisely the players we want right now!

We will most likely have 3 guys retiring this year and a few more moving into Veteran space so it would not suprise me if we open up a lot more salary cap then people expect. If Thompson was available on a standard salary then he would be a great pick up, however I would imagine that there will be quite big offers from GWS and GC who are after more aggression and bulk in there defenses.

Pass.
He's an undersized negating full back and we've got a bigger (and better) version already.
HUGELY DISAGREE. He is very attacking, plays tall, an ideal Scarlett replacement, well Milburn at least, ready made defensive gun, with the $ after Mooney, Drum, Milburn etc gone surely a perfect match, just what we need
