Re: Welsh gone

Is this another coincidence jenny? There is something happening down at West Lakes. That's now 4 players who wanted to leave the club in one off-season, that’s an alarming number.

Welsh IS a quality forward who is one of the most reliable kicks for goal in the league. He is however extremely inconsistent and you never knew which Welsh would turn up. He would either kick a bag or struggle to get a kick. As macca said, I believe his departure has both positives and negatives. The AFC have stated a number of times how they are expecting big things from Kurt Tippett this season so I expect him to play at least half of the season assuming he’s fit. Sellar will struggle to make his debut because it seems he’s somewhat in the “doghouse” and needs a massive pre-season just to get back in the good books. The negative of Welsh’s departure is that we have lost our lone match winning forward and the best key defender will now go to McGregor/Gill. That’s a depressing thought considering one looks like he's one his last legs and the other has played 7 games.

One thing’s for sure, our forward line will look extremely different in 2008.

FF: Burton, McGregor, Tippett
CHF: Porplyzia, Gill, Reilly

Very suspect looking forward line. 3 talls and 3 smalls, I would like to include Sellar/Walker but that's wishful thinking and it'll be 2009 before we see them playing for the AFC.

Match Winning Forward?

Like 1 match a year.

Re: Welsh gone

Buggar. Welshy as our leading goal-kicker will be a loss for the next couple of years ... but it just forces to completely overhaul our mal-functioning forward line with younger talent now rather than later.

Of course it's a suspect looking forward line. We're rebuilding it.

It'd look more suspect with Welsh in there anyway.

Re: Welsh gone

I've got a bad feeling this could really hurt us in the short-term: sure, Welsh was injury prone & undisciplined at times, but he's one of the few forwards who could kick straight and apply pressure in the forward line.

While his departure with the others does give opportunities for the youngsters to learn their craft, I can't immediately see a 50+ goal kicker out of the remaining group (at least while Tippett & Sellar are still rookies and the Henchman is coming back from injury), and we also have to find a quick replacement for Bode's crumbing/forward pressure too. It may be exciting times but it could be frustrating too.

What will really cheese me off is if the Bulldogs or Melbourne get Welsh in the PSD. All along the AFC were held to ransom by these clubs for Hudson & Meesen saying they would snap them up for nothing, so they were traded for peanuts. The truth is it would have cost these clubs their first PSD pick to pick them up - now it looks like one of them effectively gets two of our possible starting players for 2008 for sweet bugger-all. Nice work guys.

Re: Welsh gone

Is anyone REALLY surprised by this?!

Considering our treatment of older players in the last couple of years (rightly or wrongly) and the somewhat questionable policy for 30 year olds and those approaching 30, I am in no way surprised that Welsh took the option of securing his finacial future for the next 2-3 years and ably support his young family.

I am disappointed that he is gone and I am disappointed with the way players are ready to walk out of the club but I cannot say its their fault. It goes both ways.

Looking on the bright side, it opens up the door for a youngster to step in and cement a spot in the forward line. A spot might have just opened up for Tippett or Jericho or Vince. Unfortunatly, I think the departure of Welsh means that Bock will almost certainly play as a forward next year!

For your 1st team in 2008 I reckon it will look something like this --

FB Bassett, Rutten, Johncock
HB McLeod, Stevens, Symes
C Reilly, Knights, Van Berlo
HF Burton, Bock, Porplyzia
FF Tippett, McGregor, Vince
Ruck Maric, Goodwin, Thompson
I/C Griffin, Douglas, Edwards, Massie
Emerg Biglands, Gill, MacKay

Hentschel to come in when fit enough, assuming the others are all fit, and maybe a recruit or 2, depending on who they are?

Re: Welsh gone

I think its a good thing, im a fan of welsh when he is "on" but its very inconsistent that this happens.. Hes now getting older and has always been injury prone.. We all will agree in a couple of years.. The thing to frustrate me is we could have traded if this was going to happen.. Im so excited at the youth and freshness we will see- sellar, jericho, vince, tippett, walker, campbell, griffin, moran, symes.. On top of the continued development of knights, porps, van berlo, reilly, gill.. There are players whos best is yet to come also like bock, johncock.. And for those saying the younger ones wont do anything for a long time, surprises come every year- westhoff is one.. I can see a tippett or someone being a big talking point next year in the comp

Re: Welsh gone

Mixed feelings. With huge uncertainties over the future of Trent Hentschel we dont have a match winning forward. Sure he was inconsistant but he did win games off his own boot. Maybe Burton can push down into a permanent forward, although his kicking probably isnt good enough for that. Kenny looks like he'll be a full-time fixture in the forwardline with guys like Tippett and Sellar playing the odd game during the season to ease them into AFL footy. I dont think this means Bocky will move forward again but stranger things have happened.

My forward line for Rd1 2008 looks like this -

HF: Porplyzia Gill Jericho
FF: Burton Mcgregor Vince

Re: Welsh gone

If Welshy does go to the Bulldogs Round 1 just keeps getting tastier with both he and Hudson presumably lining up against us. After the way both players left the AFC, moreso Huddo, there might be a bit of niggle.

Re: Welsh gone

I'm quite disappointed that he's gone, 50 goals a year in one of the worst forward lines in the comp is nothing to laugh about. Only wish we had used him as a sweetner in one of those trades though...

Next year's foward line is definitely going to be different, it doesn't look that promising but the list is rebuilding so it's going to be expected.

Its way to early to tell how our 2008 line up will look like but I see things a little bit different to this.

FB Bassett, Rutten, Johncock
HB McLeod, Bock, Goodwin
C Reilly, Shirley, Knights
HF Gill, McGregor, Edwards
FF Tippett, Burton, Porplyzia
Ruck Maric, Thompson, Van Berlo
I/C Griffin, Douglas, Symes, Stevens
Emerg Biglands, Vince, MacKay

As far as I can see, the only negative I can take out of losing Scott Welsh is player depth. From my perspective we have player who can and have just as much talent to replace him. So IMO see ya Scottie; don’t let the door hit you on your arse on the way out.

Brett Burton can basically replace Scott Welsh as a lead out player from the goal square. With Jason Porplyzia and Nick Gill we will not lose any of that defensive pressure he applied. With Scott Welsh in the aside gave us that luxury of playing Brett Burton as a floating forward, now we will just rely upon him more. If Brett Burton, Ken McGregor and Nick Gill all have healthy pre seasons the forward line can function around theses three players. Kenny McGregor and Nick Gill can easily kick 35 goals each and Brett Burton can kick 60 plus in a season. If we can get 120 to 140 goals in one season out of Gill, Burton and McGregor the AFC forward line will function fine. Jason Porplyzia is ready to have a break out season and rise up to the challenge of being the number 1 small forward.

One mans misfortune is another man good fortune. By the end of 2008 I would like to see a very different forward line to the one that started it. By the end of 2008 I hope Sellar, Tippett and Walker have been given a chance to shine. This is the begging of the next stage of the AFC future.

Not sure if WELSH had his name up for trade but what would you guys have expected to get for him (being a 50 goal forward) during trade week?

Oh I dunno. We probably would've tried to be realistic and asked for someone like maybe Jonathan Brown or Chris Judd. Those sorts of players.
