Re: Welsh gone

The club is in a no win situation. Sign him to a 2 year deal and they get shot down for mismanagment when he goes down with an injury halfway through the year and is considered an old player. Other players get crabby as once they got to 30 they had to sign 1 year deals and you are rewarding a player that has got himself in the media for a misdemeaner.

Don't sign him for 2 years, you're labelled as disloyal to your players.

Re: Welsh gone

Bloody hell, can it get any worse? This has to be the most frustrating off-seasons we've had. Everyone wants out, one thing the club has to do for sure is scrap this crappy only one-year contracts for players over 30. It's clearly scaring many away, all these people leaving just makes it even more frustrating that we delisted blokes like Torney and Bode.

It won't happen but I would love for all clubs to overlook Welsh because of his age and he can **** off for all I care.

Re: Welsh gone

I might aswell go and get the number 30 put on my jumper because the way we are going there will be no players left except jericho!

Love it:thumbsu:

On the more serious side, its sad to see scotty go, am a big fan, always have been, needless to say though, whilst being a good servant for the club, he hasn't quite lived up to expectations and has struggled with injury a heap. His will be a hard spot to fill. Bit pissed off they couldn't sort this out before trade week though, might have turned Meesen's 3rd rounder into a 2nd rounder, or gotten 22 off the dogs, perhaps even a 2nd rounder on its own, only a dream though.

On the bright side however, it does open up another spot for some of our youngsters to come through and have a go eg Tippet or Sellar, we also now have an extra pick for the PSD which. This also helps with again lowering the age of our list and cleanses us of one more injury prone player. I wonder what Rucci will find to complain about our list now?

Re: Welsh gone

Definately a big overhaul to your list this year (and last as well). Plenty of regulars leaving, gives opportunity to younger guys. Though it is a bit strange to have all these players leave at once, look what happened at the end of 96 and the result and what happened to us at the end of 03.

Sometimes a big chance is a good thing.

Re: Welsh gone

Disappointing to see Welsh leave (particularly because he is just about our most accurate shot for goal), but I respect the club's decision and I also respect Scott's need for better job security.

If there was any doubt that the club was going through its biggest overhaul since 1996, then there is absolutely none now!!

p.s. it was reported that Welsh turns 30 next month. I thought he turned 29 on December 1? Can anyone clarify? Scott??

Too inexperienced, lacking the 26-28yr old core group that wins flags, well behaved, polite....

I'm pretty disappionted that he is going. But at the end of the day he is leaving, if only in part, because we aren't likely to win a flag in the next couple of years. That being the case 2008 is the year for blooding. Or we could alway redraft Ian Perrie :D.

Re: Welsh gone

welsh could apply for the national draft aswell couldn't he? He doesnt have to be picked up in the PSD...

I'm tipping he will be picked up before the PSD. a 50 goal a season player wouldn't last too long as "unlisted"

Re: Welsh gone

**** off Welsh. You are weak as piss on and off the field. I'm ****ing really happy about this to be honest. Might mean we suffer a bit of pain in 2008, but I'm ****ing pumped to see Tippett, Walker & Sellar dominate our forward lines in the years to come. If the Dogs are really that keen on having two injury-prone ****wits from our club, let them have them.

Re: Welsh gone

Meh.

Short term it will hurt a little, but we're not going to be challenging for at least a few years, when he'd be well and truly out of the equation.

Opens up opportunities for a younger guy to come in (Or Jezza ), who could very well be around when we're challenging again.

Re: Welsh gone

oh for ****s sake! what is going on down there at AFC?

there is no one left!!

I might aswell go and get the number 30 put on my jumper because the way we are going there will be no players left except jericho!

p** off western bulldogs stop trying to lure our players!

What makes you so sure it's the Western Bulldogs?

I had read recently that Melbourne (who have the pick prior to us in the PSD) were supposedly offering him a 2 year deal.

Don't forget we lost Simon Tregenza (drafted by the Bulldogs but allowed to remain in Adelaide when the Crows were formed),Tony McGuinness & Kym Koster to you guys.

Re: Welsh gone

hell our forwad line is looking good next year!! :(

this will guarentee sellar and tippett will get a run next year i reckon! :thumbsu:

Re: Welsh gone

Look at the positives boys. Scotty Welsh aint going to take your mob or any other team to a premiership.

Good chance to find someone else and give them a crack.:thumbsu:

Hopefully Trent Hentschel can get back to it a little sooner than hoped. One of my fav non Pies players.

Big Brad Moran could park his massive frame up forward and be tried out. Lot of potential in this kid.

Will Sellar get a crack in 08???

Welshy will probably end up sitting on the sidelines for quite a chunk of the year anyway.

very balanced and well thought out post dealing with the issue objectively from Scott's playing history perspective and with regard to our future prospects.

Get the hell out of this thread !

;)

Re: Welsh gone

That's because he's got the pics of who was involved with what happened to the goat. :D

I've got mixed feelings about Welsh's departure.

Part of me says that he's doing what he needs to do to protect his livelihood, and that's understandable.

Another part of me says that he has let us down miserably because it was his perpetual behavioural issues that led to us not giving him the 2nd year and his leaving.

Part of me says it will be exciting to see new forward structures and new faces up forward.

Another part of me says that we could be in for a dog of a year while we rebuild our forward lines.

Part of me says that it's great that the club are flexing their muscles and saying that they won't tolerate players not complying with team rules as success comes when all players do the right thing, not some of them.

Another part of me questions whether we are becoming over regimented and almost becoming self-destructive in the process.

To say that's it's been an unusual year both on and off the field is putting it mildly!!

you're a man of many parts M23.....:D

All of what you're saying is exactly how I feel. It's difficult to respond without being contradictory. When it comes down to it though

Club > individual.

and that's how it should be rationalised IMO

Re: Welsh gone

Exciting times ahead at the Crows. We should see some new fresh faces getting a run next year. I think McGregor staying is now looking very important.

Scott never lived up to his very great potential often through his own behaviour. The drinking culture in Melbourne will not assist him IMO.

Re: Welsh gone

I'd rather see Tippett, Walker and Sellar arrive than watch Welsh push out another mediocre half season. This is good news.

Re: Welsh gone

From an outsiders point of view he wasn't that good anyway. Ask youself this. Is he going to be in your next premiership side? No! Then don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out. We had this type of situation in 2004 and it allowed Buddy and Roughy a chance. As a supporter who would you rather have in the forward line of a team that is developing and isn't much of a shot next year anyway, Welsh or Sellar/Tippett?

Short term pain = Long term gain!

Re: Welsh gone

Mmmmmm well there you go hey lost a bit of experience but if it takes the club in the right direction then maybe its the best thing.

If the rebuild hadnt begun already it certainly has now.

I'm generally in the same boat as you, however I'm leaning towards that it was a good thing. Cracks might show in the short term, but Welsh's spot can be covered. He certainly wasn't the most consistent player, often kicking a bag of goals and only a one or two the next week.

I'd like to see perhaps Jason Porplyzia play down forward on a consistent level and hopefully even James Sellar and Kurt Tippett could gain a few games next year. Bernie Vince is also another option.

Re: Welsh gone

I'm actually very happy about this.

Scott Welsh had/has talent, except he barely ever used it, he is easily replaced by someone like Jericho in the short term.

I would rather have a young kid kicking 1 or 2 each week than Scott Welsh who is well past his best.

As others have stated this type of thing is needed and it gives opportunity to younger players.

Re: Welsh gone

Is this another coincidence jenny? There is something happening down at West Lakes. That's now 4 players who wanted to leave the club in one off-season, that’s an alarming number.

Welsh IS a quality forward who is one of the most reliable kicks for goal in the league. He is however extremely inconsistent and you never knew which Welsh would turn up. He would either kick a bag or struggle to get a kick. As macca said, I believe his departure has both positives and negatives. The AFC have stated a number of times how they are expecting big things from Kurt Tippett this season so I expect him to play at least half of the season assuming he’s fit. Sellar will struggle to make his debut because it seems he’s somewhat in the “doghouse” and needs a massive pre-season just to get back in the good books. The negative of Welsh’s departure is that we have lost our lone match winning forward and the best key defender will now go to McGregor/Gill. That’s a depressing thought considering one looks like he's one his last legs and the other has played 7 games.

One thing’s for sure, our forward line will look extremely different in 2008.

FF: Burton, McGregor, Tippett
CHF: Porplyzia, Gill, Reilly

Very suspect looking forward line. 3 talls and 3 smalls, I would like to include Sellar/Walker but that's wishful thinking and it'll be 2009 before we see them playing for the AFC.
