I think we should consider taking him over Ryley Dunn tomorrow. We could always take Dunn is the rookie draft though. Welsh is a proven forward who has had limited opportunity because of injury and has the potential to kick 50+ goals in an injury free season. With the loss of forwards Kennedy and Whitnall, we could benefit from having another leading forward who can make our forward structure that little bit easier.
IMO, Our forward line would look something like this with Welsh.

HFF: Betts Waite Cloke
F: Welsh Fevola Fisher

Eddie could push to the midfield as well as create an option up forward. Fisher would play as a backup to Fevola and stay in the goal square for his trademark big pack marks while Welsh could take over from Eddies FP position from last year and could prove to be pretty handy replacement as well.
He just turned 29 so obviously the age factor is the negative aspect but i think if he has another 3-4 years in him, it could well be a decision we wouldn't regret.

That forward line is far too tall. Even having 4 talls up there is one too many. Welsh's off field antics in Adelaide and his age will mean that Carlton will stay well away from him tomorrow. As for our forward line, I hope that it looks a little like this in round 1:

HF: Gibbs Waite Fisher
FF: Betts Fevola Houlihan

He's off to the Doggies. We've made it clear that we won't be going for him, as have the tigers and Dees.

I wouldn't have minded him, more firepower up front. But they've made it clear they want to think long-term.

It's a non-issue because it is definate that he is going to the Doggies.
It is very tempting to draft him, but i think that we have to remember that he is 29, and realistically, i think that we wont be pushing for a premiership until 2010, when he will be 32, so there is not much point taking him.
Wouldn't be that dissapointed if we somewhow did get him.

So that's what it looks like when you put his name in our fwd line... what about the fact that he's old and shit though??? Oh and he's a full forward (we have one of those) and he's got a shit attitude.

So that's a lock then?

nice rant. i agree mostly. hes shit. if we didnt have fisher he would be a good pickup, but will be better than what welsh will offer. remembe rhe was the number one forward and still didnt dominate. let alone the 3rd or so for us. rather a youngster

I'd swap Waite with Cloke

Now thats a forward line worth getting excited about !!!:D :thumbsu: ;)

i hate to put a dampener on that as a forward line, but realistically why can we expect Houlihan, Betts & waite to improve on what they haveshown previously?

waite - so promising but disgustingly erratic over his 5 years

betts - great defensive skills & shows brilliance but gives so very little on a consistent basis

houlihan - one of the most skillful players in the comp but his decision making in tight circumstances is as bad as I've seen. Also he hasn't played as a forward pocket onver a sustained timeframe EVER, why can we expect anything to special..........he's no Darren Jarman/Greg Williams who were able to go forward & have a presence.

And who rucks AWG?
And where do you play Waite?

Before you answer, Waite is much more dangerous in the forward line than in the back half. Plus, we have Carlos to play FB, Thornton to play CHB, and Saddington, Bower, Austin, Scotland, Walker and Hadley to fill the other 4 positions.

Waite(28 goals\111 marks) is on the way to becoming one of the premier KPP's in the comp. If you didn't see enough of him this year to realise his quality and irreplaceable value to our team, then you don't watch a lot of footy!

Which player in our team creates the most forward line pressure? Betts has more tackles(65) and smothers(11) than any other forward in our side! While contributing 21 goals! His only limit is how fit he can get himself!

Never rated Houlihan more than the carbon rod from the simpsons, but he is in our best 22, and the one area on the ground he has shown at least some reason to keep him, is as an attacking forward. His disposal is spot on but cant lay a tackle, why play him defensive? He is more damaging than Scotland and Carrot's going forward. Saying he can't hold a forward cause he hasn't been aloud to settle there is a bit much.

I take the points you make about waite & betts into consideration.... but 'Waite(28 goals\111 marks) is on the way to becoming one of the premier KPP's in the comp. ' can you turn it up a little more? one swallow doesn't make a summer & waite has played one decent year since his drafting, and I dont think 28 goals, & how many contested marks? makes him a premier KPP in anyones language.

its all good & well to say Welsh is over the hill & his off field antics are not great but he still averages 1.8 goals per game over 13 years (with a premiership medallion) compared to waites 1.2 over 5 seasons................

pull you head in mate the stats speak for themselves. its certain that welsh would add to our forward line alongside waite, fevola, betts & whoever else puts up their hand.......
