Just for you jocks on the boards they announced yesterday that the winner of the SPL will get automatic entry into the main draw of the champions league next season, the runners up still has to go through a playoff.

Should be of interest to ... well ... Rangers and Celtic fans.

Thanks for that, but we have known about this coming up for over 12 months.

It's when thier co-efficient gets good enough for a third team that things might just finally start getting good for scottish football. All Hearts (perennial third) have to do is get slovan bratislava or birkirkara or some other minnow team in a playoff and make the groupstage and then there might just be enough money for 3 good teams in Scotland.

In the meantime direct passage to the group stage is something long overdue for Rangers and Celtic.

Very True, however to get a 3rd Spot would mean the other sides in Scotland who make Europe have to improve the performance. Celtic's run last season and Rangers the year before, plus all our years in the 90's in the CL have help get us the direct spot, its up to the others to match us once in a while

As a supporter of Bundesliga Fussball such a decision annoys me. Basically I'm sure they done it because financially having either the Ghers or Bhoys in Europe will mean far better revenue-raising, especially when UEFA start to look at the TV rights in Great Britain, a market that due to most teams being rather crap is largely untapped sponsorwise. UEFA would rather have the OLd Firm in rather than more teams from eastern countries (with limited revenue opportunities) such as the Czech Republic, Croatia & Yugoslavia.

I mean Germany only gets 2 direct qualifiers (the year VfB Stuttgart & FC Bayern). Yet after Dortmund's exit in the CL qualifying rounds, I guess nobody can whinge too much. They should be good enough to be there in their own right. As are Schalke Leverkusen and possibly even Hertha BSC Berlin. Yet none of these sides ARE good enough.

Still I can't complain. Having Celtic bring 15000 fans was alot better than empty seats during the first round match in Munich. I'm sure they loved Roy Makaay's 2 goals as well.

Surprisingly, UEFA can't suddenly decide that Scotland deserves the automatic spot.

The spots in the Champions League for each nation are determined by a formula that allocates points according to how each league's teams perform in Europe.

For many years, England only received one direct spot. With United continually making the quarter finals plus cameos from various English clubs making it the quarter final and later stages of the Champions League and UEFA Cup, England eventually received their 2 direct entry spots and 2 spots via the qualification route.

I'm pretty sure that the most direct qualifiers that any country can have is 2.
