Scouts

Was anyone here a scout or guide, or part of any similar organization such as boys brigade, girls brigade, army, navy or air force cadets, or private school cadets?

I have some found memories being a scout.

We would do things like ride "chariots" made out of 3 long pieces of timber bound with rope in a triangle shape and stand on the bottom rung while our mates would pull us along. Sparks would fly out from the bottom as the timber was pulled along the bitumen road.

I also remember being at a rally up in the Hunter Valley and surviving a fierce storm overnight and every tent there got blown away (except for our troop) and all our gear getting saturated.

Anyone care to reminisce?

I really enjoyed it.

We had meetings once a week where you would learn different skills and have certain tasks to complete to achieve badges and go up in rank. Learnt a lot of cool things. Went camping and did a lot of community work.

Went to a Jamboree with Scouting groups from all over Australia and used to billet with rural scouting groups.

It was quite popular when I was young. Don't know if it's even a thing anymore.

I was in cubs and quite enjoyed it even though I earnt bugger all merit badges.

I never went on to scouts though as it became uncool to do that stuff once you were a teenager.

Still big ... my son went to Jamboree in Sydney last January. 10,000 there I think

I was in Girls' Brigade from the age of 9, right through to the end of high school. Don't remember much of it, though.

Was in Cubs. Quit at the stage where you had to move to Scouts. Can't remember if it seemed dorky or annoying at that point (probably both).

Actually I didn't like it, my parents thought it was character building. Got a few of the lame badges you could do without needing any outdoor activities, like knots and whatnot. Bronze Boomerang too. Didn't go up to Scouts.

i was in the Boys Brigade in Brisbane for a few years around 1967-1971 (pre teenage years). I remember very little about it apart from the hat and uniform, it is probably the source of my psychosexual issues.

Got a few of the lame badges you could do without needing any outdoor activities, like knots and whatnot. Bronze Boomerang too.

We'd have an excursion or camp every month or so which usually got us a badge for something. Never got a boomerang though, that was for kids who could be bothered doing shit on their own outside the direct instruction.

I did Cubs in Melbourne for a year. Didn't really do much probably due to age but earnt a few badges.

Joined the Sea Cubs in Dublin but probably due to age we didn't do much either. A couple of camps in 2yrs and most meetings were spent playing soccer in summer or watching tv in winter.

Joined the Boy Scouts of America whilst living in Jakarta. That troop was amazing. Loads of camps and day activities and plenty of opportunities to earn badges.
