What do you guys think about scrapping the draft in favour of the system used in soccer! Which is pretty similar to teh system used in the VFL before the draft was adopted! I am just sick of teh crap teams getting the top draft picks. I am very proud to be a collingwood supporter as our team plays with pride and passion and doesnt play for picks! Imagine the passion players would play with if they have been wearing their teams colours since their junior days! This would get rid of the problem of players liek Nick davis leaving the pies because he is a sook! It would also mean that each team is in charge of its own destiny and they are not reliant on there being a good draft or 3 teams getting priority pick and there being no quality players left to pick up!

What about teams such as Brisbane and Sydney who have very limited juniors to pick from?
Yeahi suppose these two teams would be at a disadvantage! But the N.T is closer to them then it is for most teams, and there is plenty of talent up there! The only reason why they would struggle to get good players is because they are in Rugby territory. Converting kids to play footy would not be easy but the AFL is trying to get a foot hold in QLD and NSW and to do that they have to put in stacks of cash regardless! I think in terms of winning over supporters there isnt a better way then getting kids envolved at a young age! A sydney team which is reliant on recruiting its own players would be far more effective in converting kids to AFL then a sydney team who doesnt really care all that much about whether local boys play because they can get players from the draft! Just a few thoughts from left field :)

That is posibly one of the best comments/thoughts I have read on this board !!
In the real world, it's about survival of the fittest, not propping up losers.
I can't understand why the AFL should be any different

This draft system is crap

The thing that keeps soccer good even if your team has next to no chance of winning the premiership their is FA cup, european club competitions spots up for grabs and relegation to escape. In the AFL there is just the premiership.
There needs to be an equalisation draft as if the same 4 or 5 teams were the only chance to win it each year the game would get pretty boring.

But it wouldnt be like soccer, because there is a thing called the salary cap! This would definetly prevent teams having a monopoly!

I think the draft is a good idea, but the system it works on is flawed. Instead we should move onto a rotating order, in which starting in alphabetical order teams pick players. In the first year Adelaide get pick 1, but in the 2nd the y get 16, as to move them to the back of the order. So over a 16 year period every team gets a 1st pick, every1 get a 16th and so on. More so teams should be able to trade picks in future years up to a maximum of 3, to use as trades.

That doesnt fix the problem of players leaving because they lack the passion needed to play for a club!
