News Scully Compo

Though I would say that this is more due to, before this year anyway, the fact Victoria has 10 teams compared to 6 (now 8).

Furthermore... the shrouded culture of WA is not to somes liking... Adelaide...well do I need to say anything... and Sydney and Brisbane is rugby based.

But ultimately we agree??

There's a rumor going around on Demonland that we are very keen to use our Scully compo on O'Meara, maybe even using our first round pick this year as a sweetener.

From a guy who stated that Neeld was Melbourne's favorite choice as coach about a week from his appointment.

Apparently Lyon is a major force behind this play.

Could be bullshit, but I hope it isn't.

3 first round picks would probably trump pick 4.

Yeah sorry, I read that as only one of our Scully compo picks & pick 12 my bad. 3 first round picks for a 17yo kid who can't even play until 2013? We'd want to make sure he was the best player since Judd or Ablett otherwise that is MASSIVELY overpaying.

As good as the kid sounds and looks, I would hate for the club to 'spend' 3 first round picks (including two in a strong draft next year) on him.

This years pick, one of the compo picks and a big bodied fringe player (or two) I could live with. And that would leave us with two first rounders next year (Viney + 1).

I agree with stretch. O'Meara and Crouch are seriously good, and if they come good will be worth three first rounders, but the risk is absolutely enormous.

I'm not on the O'Meara/Crouch snowball, personally.

As Gaz stated above, if he and Crouch come good they'll be worth three first rounders. Gun juniors, that's true, but that doesn't mean they'll be superstars in the AFL.

Why not use our compo in 2012 and get three consecutive picks in the low teens?

I think two first rounders + Warnock would be a good deal for both parties.

IMO there also isn't a huge deal of risk with this deal, the plus is we get to develop him in the AFL system for a year.

Emma Quayle thinks very highly of his maturity and commitment; recruiters also don't often get the top end picks wrong these days.

Personally I think our list has been built really dilligently and it covers a lot of bases.

I think we can afford to spend a bit on a fantastic talent.

Two compo picks and our first rounder? Get f***ed.

I can accept parting with the two compo picks and a player (Warnock, Bate, Dunn) but no way in hell do I give them 3 first round picks for a 17 year old kid that can't play until 2013.

My preference would be forget about him, draft three kids next year in the first round of what is supposed to be one of the best drafts in years and reap the rewards of them.

To be honest we could have said the same about Scully two years ago - had the maturity, tank etc and then he pissed off after two years.

I'm not saying O'Meara would do the same but if we are going to cough up at least two first rounders for him then we would want to make DAMN sure he was going to not only be a serious gun but also a one club player.

I share your sentiment mate and perhaps it is the institutionalised Melbourne supporters in us that this springs from.

I have to say though that we have some pretty damn good people at the club now to make something like this work. It's been kind of surreal but our transition in the last month has been massive. I can picture Neeld, Craig and co saying we'll make him want to be a 1 club player at Melbourne by the time of his next contract. If our club reaches new levels then hopefully "homesickness" becomes less of a risk and a thing of the past.

I agree completely.

There is always some risk, maybe we would be better off bidding to get Crouch, but I think if we get O'Meara he will stay.

Not many kids go home.

Apart from Gazza needing a new pair of pants this could be a good deal.

Would you trade 3 first rounders for the no.1 draft pick?

10ish, 12 + 18ish for pick 1?

I'd also like to point out that, while I can understand some uncertainty due to the Scully situation, O'Meara will not be put in the same position as Scully.

That was a unique situation.

Sadly true :p

Why do we have 18? Assuming we finish 10th in 2012 we should have Pick 11 as our first rounder, which means the compo would be Pick 12.

I reckon we might be able to get something else off GWS too if we give them 3 first rounders.

Would love to see the club throw in Warnock and a few of Bate, Dunn, Maric, MacDonald, Wonneamirri, Jetta, Spencer, MacNamara and Juice to try and get Brad Crouch as well. Can't see GWS going for it though because of that old adage 'many spuds don't make a gun'. Unless we're willing to give up someone like Bennell, Petterd, Rivers, Davey or Bartram who has a place in our side, and if they want to go. Which I wouldn't do.

Does Picks 10, 12 and 12 + Bate, Dunn and Warnock = Two mini-draft picks?

O'Meara is worth the punt. I'd definitely try giving GWS both comp picks for him and if they want a sweetener, then throw in Warnock or some other spud we have on our list. But I wouldn't be giving them 3 first round picks. I'd like for the club to hold onto at least 1 of them for this draft.

Basically, if we can get O'Meara for Scully, I feel the club has broken even, which would be a great result. But giving up 3 first round draft picks would mean we are losing slightly. But again, if the club feel this is what they need to do, then I'll back them 100%. From all reports O'Meara will be a gun. Either way, I think the compo picks places the club in a strong position. If we use them to get O'Meara, then great! If we use them next year on a supposed super draft, then we are winners also. We are in a good place with these picks. Thank you Tom $cully...
