Hey I was wondering what you guys think about Dempster...
Is he likely to be an effective starting 22 player for us in 2008 and beyond?
Where would you say his best position is, I hate seeing him in the midfield tagging, I prefer him in the backline...
What do you think are his chances of developing into a key position backman, he has the size and closing speed to do so...
Are you disappointed to see him go or are you glad he's gone?
and lastly was he a part of your starting 22? he didn't play a whole season in '07 but as far as I was aware he has injury issues...

On another note, how do you guys rate Mission? you guys have had a dream run with injuries, how much of that should go down to Mission?

I thought he could have been a good player for us but unfortunately due to our run with injuires he never managed to string more than afew games together before he was replaced with one of our more senior players.

Handy, but not a star.
Not a key position player. might work in a back pocket or flank. Nice long kick.
He wasn't quite a "best 22" player, but he was pretty close to it, usually got a regular game. He'd probably be in the same boat at St Kilda, get a game most weeks, but might get squeezed out if everyone is available.

He'll never be a Brownlow medallist or anything like that, but he should play 100+ games for the Saints

He probably won't be an effective key back because he's not a great mark or spoiler and has a bit of trouble chasing leads, but I think he could be a very effective forward flank or flanker because he has good stamina for his size and he would be able to use his height to advantage on the flanks (like we've done with Goodes). He also has a wonderful kick that we wasted because of Roos' relunctance to try him in a more attacking/creative role.

I'm convinced that he would still have been a good player for us and I hope he does well for you guys (just hopefully not against us).

With a beautiful kick, height and the stamina that goes with his height, I always envisaged him as a likely candidate for flanker, but Roos thought differently and placed him in the back lines most of the time.
Hated seeing him go, was one of my favourite players, and I just thought he was starting to settle into the club.

I'll go with FM in saying that, I hope he has a wonderful career at St Kilda..just not in games against us :D

I agree with all this. Absolute booming kick and can kick long straight goals on the run. I think he will be suited to your backline as you have Fisher and MCGuire as talls so Dempster won't be forced to play as a key position backman.

I will never forget his dash down the MCG wing on Septemer 24, 2005.

Good luck Demps.

you'll have been told about his big kick, he's kicked a few goals from well beyond the 50m on the run, and his other big attribute is remarkable pace, i remember one day he simply ran around daniel wells and left him flatfooted, which was a real surprise
but his biggest problem was complete lack of confidence and shocking indecisiveness, often caught with the ball from behind
but if he's allowed to play and stay in the team, he'd be all right
and i have to say, looking at some of the blokes you have in your best 22 (x clarke, r clarke, james gwilt, mcqualter, fiora, milne, montagna, et al, who can all play but are hardly reliable and consistent) he's at least gonna have a crack

The blokes in red are by no means starting 22 players when we have a full squad to choose from, as for X. Clarke he will probably be the first to go if we have a player pressing for selection, Milne is reliable with his 2 goals a game however Montagna was one of the more consistent players in the league this year, he was challenging for elite status at one point...

He came to the club as a wingman and I believe that is his natural position. I also probably rate him (potentially) a bit higher than most Swans' fans.

Dempster is an excellent athlete, running 2.91 for the 20m at the 2002 draft camp (4th quickest) and was the top rated tall in the beep test. He's 192cm and as everybody else has noted a good long kick. He's not particularly physical, but he doesn't lack courage, although his game is probably best suited to an outside/receiver's role.

Although playing in our premiership, he's not a Paul Roos dour type defender, so was in & out of the team. Roos lack of confidence was typified by the fact that Dempster had a career high 22 disposals, 11 marks and 4 tackles against West Coast in round 16 & was then dropped for 5 weeks.

If Lyon can build up his confidence and use Dempster's natural attributes I believe he is more than capable of playing very good football for the Saints. However if he is used as a spare parts player he will probably be in and out of your team.

Given your likely tall forward line, a player like Dempster running and carrying the ball and then delivering long could well be a very pleasing sight for Saints' fans.

PS It always hard to rate trainers, but the superb run that we had whilst Misson was our fitness coach has to be more than good luck. I think it's fair to say that the Swans' recovery program is probably viewed as the prototype and that Misson's program of tailoring individual programs for each player was also highly successful. I'd be very surprised if, in the next couple of years, the Saints soft injuries aren't significantly reduced. Although it may not happen immediately as I believe he has said for much of the first year his main focus will be in collecting data on the player's capacity to handle specific workloads.

not being a close follower, obviously, i have only seen glimpses of montagna and i still don't see why he has earned such praise from your club's fans
to me, he still goes missing in games, and goes through periods of 3-4 games where he seems very disappointing
i am aware he had a good run, but i still (personally) think he's been a disappointment
similar to both the clarkes and gwilt
milne, well, best you don't come on to the swans board to get any opinion of him
i'll just give my tuppence worth, which is that he's a selfish peaheart who'd rather fight or argue with umpires than chase down his man running out of defence
i have held similar opinions of jeff farmer and paul medhurst but both of them have at least imporved their work ethic, whereas milne to me has gone backward, and if that two goals a game thing was just on 07 (not his whole career) it says a lot about how bad the rest of your forwards went, you were the second-lowest-scoring side
if it's over his career, then he hasn't done a lot to keep demanding a game, and right now i'd be putting our man schneids in ahead of milne straight away

That sounds like Montagna pre-2006. This year he was easily our best midfielder (3rd in the B&F), lead the team for average disposals and was probably our most consistent midfielder (having under 18 dispsosals just twice).

Xavier Clarke is a solid player but he'll never be a star. Same for Raph providing that he gets his body right. Gwilt is just a backup medium/tall defender (very similar to Dempster in that he is a great kick, but unsure of himself).
