This article printed on Anzac day of 1919 reports on the VFA coming out of recess. This paragraph about tweeked my interest.

Hawthorn, after standing down for four years, are now getting into working order under "Dukie" McKenzie, coach. The secretary Mr.
F. G. Pritchard, says it will be the policy of the club to encourage local juniors and with a stiffening of such old players as Larkin, Antonio,
Fewster, Gibbs (2), Wilkinson, Chapman, Holland, Cornell, Alley (lately returned from the front, of Williamstown fame), and a very line lot
of others, a good side will be forthcoming. This club, which lost most of its old players at the war, feels the loss. About 21 of the old
combination responded to the call of duty, and half that number died on active service.
A practice match will be played against Canterbury
Fix ton 26th April, at Hawthorn.
