Rebuild? Are you 'avin a giggle?

We have a few cracks that need to be patched. The whole house doesn't have to be demolished.
Exactly. The list is good. We need to reload and tweak a few things such as building bigger bodies. You don't play finals two years in a row if your list is poo. We got the whole thing wrong from the start this year. I am sure Kenny won't let it happen again.

Nah, the problem is impatient fans who don't realise that it takes more than two seasons to rectify fundamental problems that were ingrained during the development stage under Primus.

We did so well the last two years because no one was expecting it and didn't put us under pressure until we had built enough confidence to handle it. This season we haven't had that luxury and old skeletons are coming out of the closet, namely the reversion to poor skills.

Instinct when the pressure is off is vastly different to instinct when the pressure is on. It's nothing to do with tactics, because you don't think about tactics under pressure. You don't have time to think.
Great post Janus. I firmly believe that things are not as bad as some seem to be saying. Things are never as good or as bad as they seem. A few changes over preseason and we will be better for this year no doubt.

What's wrong about it? It seems crystal clear to me that our problems are on an instinctive level, because as soon as we come under any pressure and become the hunted we revert to 2010-12 skills. There is no quick fix for that. Tactics don't make Jonas play deplorably. Tactics don't make Schulz and Gray miss easy shots at goal. Tactics don't tell Broadbent to bump an injured player. Pressure reveals who you are at the core.

This is our 2000/2006 year. But it's not preordained that we become successful after it. It's up to the players to allow themselves to be reprogrammed - to keep believing in the direction they are going. If they do that, they'll use this season as a springboard.

Graham Cornes said on the radio that a knowledgable person at AFL House said that this would be a dip year for us. And it's true - we went into it with the expectations of a top four team, the belief of a top four team but not the resilience of one. That comes from adversity and experience in doing it week in week out. Putting the same performance in every game.

These players are driven to succeed, which is why I know they'll get there. The ox is slow, but the earth is patient.
Another great post. You're speak too much sense.

If Wingard plays full time midfield we will have a lot of goalless qtrs and halves. He's our only decent forward. Been our leading goalkicker 4 weeks straight.
The seasons gone. It's time to get our most talented player into the game for longer periods and let's find out just how good Wingard can be.

Skills, size, composure, leadership.

Our skills and decision making has deserted us. Not easy to get back. Bobby's grubber kick down the wing to Gray in the 3rd with nobody on him which just kills run and momentum say it all. This guys a a 10 year player who can't hit up a simple 30 metre pass.
We lack on field leadership. Boak, who's form hasn't been that great this year is a leader, but after that? Trengove has been inconspicuous this year. We don't have any real leaders in the forward line. Ollie is still a teenager FFS.

I keep hearing that Lobbe is the hardest worker and studies the game the most, but he is a dumb footballer. The Lobbe/Ryder thing isn't working. Play Ryder as the ruckman and leave Lobbes out for a while. See if Paddy can be run into form.

We will not win a flag with Schulz as our main forward. We need to play Harvey. Just play him. I don't care if if he has games where he gets 3 disposals. He needs to play.

Gold passes need to finish. Coaching Group needs a shake up.

Tell me about Palmer. I have seen him play only once.
Finds the gaols, stay at home mid sized marking forward.
Very much like Monfries but hits the scoreboard more than a defensive forward.
Can mark for his size. 189cms i think.
Athletic and good on the ground also.

it's not all doom & gloom. i hate referring to situations with other teams from the past, because every team is different. we're average at the moment, but you can't tell me we don't have a talented squad. positives are we may have unearthed a future midfield freak in ah chee. he must absolutely play every game. amon must see more game time. i'm confident there's enough depth down back to fix ourselves & find the right mix. we've got a plethora of good young mids who just aren't working hard enough right now. they're the positives, the negatives are we may be in trouble up front & it may hamper any shot at a flag till we can find ourselves a new gun forward, who that may be no one knows at this point. i think we still forget how young we actually are in games experience.

1) Delist/trade our poorly skilled players. Start with Mitchell, Jonas & Butcher.
2) Pittard full time wingman.
3) Recruit/trade for a KPF.
4) Review current fitness regime, players are already cooked and lack size.
5) New Senior Assistant coach

Which two of Harvey, Shaw, Howard, Palmer are going to kick 50 goals per year for the next 4 years so we can challenge with this group of players?

while i mostly agree, im not quite ready to give up on jonas. Has had a woeful year, but last year was an awesome year. So unless we get offered sometihng amazing that suits our needs, then he stays. When i say amazing, thats relatively speaking. Someone like Day will do.

i think we need to go hard at Sam Day. He hasnt shown much as yet, but it is possible it still may happen.

I still ahvent given up of Gorringe either, but he is a long shot to come good.

The following players are disposable for the right trade

Mitchell
Monfries
Broadbent
Oshea
Butcher
stewart
Lobbe
schulz
Young
Pittard
Moore
Shaw

Plus all rookies (excluding krak)

glory be, looking at those ages is depressing stuff.

We may have one of the younger lists in the competition on average but the gap between old and young is significant and a lot of those older players are extremely important players. Not enough quality players in the 22-26 age bracket.

What is clear from looking at the various thread even us as supporters can't put our finger on it, on one hand we have a thread complaining that burgess has trimmed down our players and we aren't big enough, then in another for up and coming changes for next week some are wanting to bring in lighter framed players and drop some of our bigger bodied guys. From seeing the game live last night we lost direction and the willingness to work for each other I'm yet to see the replay but on several occasions we played on quick from the back line only to have our guys up the field with backs turned and not prepared to run into space hence for some of terrible kicking out of the backline, not sure if they who is doing what out there but that comes from desire to work for each other.

Book and Gray are still young as is Ryder. In fact Schulz is the only player in this list who is near the end.

Agree with all but Jonas. Give him a spell but keep. Needs a chance to recapture his great form from previous seasons. Many good footballers have a down year.

He will catch your eye anyway if the last few weeks are any indication.
Logan Austin and Dougal Howard have caught the lion share of the hype
probably coz of their size while Palmer goes about his business of finding the ball, marks and goals.
Of course its early days but so far its promising.
Gee I like what I see of AhChee and Amon too.
For a smokey try Wagner

Moore, Young, Neade, Clurey, Amon, Ah Chee, O'Shea, Mitchell, Stewart, Colquhoun, S. Gray. and perhaps Redden to be given extended runs in the team at staggered intervals (ie. not all at the same time) to see what they can do at AFL level. Harvey is the only one of the 0 gamers who deserves a debut, so give him 6. Gift Shaw (when fit) and maybe a couple of 1st years a game or two each in the last 3 or 4 rounds. Not sure what to do with Butcher, seems cactus.

Then slash and burn the chaff, and harvest a new crop at year's end. Simples.
