I wouldn't be writing off Joeys and Newtown. Don't judge joeys on the side that's playing at the moment. I know after the bye they get 8 premiership players back that will be fresh and ready to give them a tilt. They could be 3rd by the bye if results go their way.

Eight players my arse..name them.

Riley Kershaw, Joe macula, Ben Capra, Josh Hovey, Ryan Williams, Jackson Davis and I'll have to ask my mate who the other couple are. They got Rees and Haintz back last week they might have been it.

Hope your well mate

Geelong West /St Peters Cheetahs/Roosters Giants are coming.
Mark it down. Watch this space.

GEELONG West-St Peter’s could be known as the GW Giants from as early as next year after holding preliminary discussions to strike an alignment with the AFL club.

A delegation of Roosters officials flew to Sydney on Friday to meet with Giants CEO David Matthews, who is a former boss of AFL Barwon, and discuss just how the unprecedented arrangement could work.

It’s understood GWSP will notify members today of an extraordinary meeting where it will discuss and possibly vote on the future direction of the GFL club in the coming weeks.

Talks have also been held with GDFL club Geelong West Cheetahs in regard to a possible joint venture, where both clubs could come together under the Giants banner and form a super club that represents the thriving Geelong West community.

From memory you're a west man Bostonian, what's your thoughts on this? Good thing or bad thing for red west? Surely any merger with the cheetahs wouldn't be actually be a merger, it'd be a takeover.

From a club theme song point of view good, might cut in half the disjointed 10 minute one we have now :D

The information swirling round the members hasn't really been that clear cut

Depends on who you speak to. I've heard that the clubs would merge and that one team would still play in the GFL and there would also be a presence in the GDFL (no idea how that works).

The Blue West oval I believe would then be used for junior and girls football training/games which would be a benefit to the Western Oval surface and also to the infrastructure of the club.

I'd have to hear the actual details on as to whether it's a good or bad thing to be honest. Cause all that's there now is whispers.

I mean if it brings with it some extra $ and potential for players and long term stability in the GFL through whatever channels it's a good thing. If it's simply is nothing but another name change then ho hum.

I think the idea is mostly about getting the Geelong West community back into footy in the area and creating a singular Geelong West identity. I've heard Blue West are keen as too seem Red West.

I don't know anything about blue west but it doesn't seem like they'd really have anything to offer you blokes? No juniors, no supporters and no success for a long time. Agree tho that the best thing for the Geelong west community is probably to have the one club for the community to hopefully get around.

What about old St. Peter's tho? They would be the losers out of this wouldn't they? Lose their name and their colours if this is to go ahead.

Money from the GDFL if in anyway there was a team in GFL and GDFL was something I heard.

And of course the Shannon Ave ground. Which is also is the home to the Geelong Gaelic Football Club at present.

Yeah that would be the final death knell for my old club. Still be photos and trophies and such floating about but in name it would finally be gone.

Still a hell of a lot of St Peter's people though that are involved and keep the club going to this day I guess.

Going by what they said on the GWS forum, all it might amount to is a few bob towards a new set of jumpers.

If that's all it is then surely you'd be better off just working something out with blue west? GWS have done this with a few clubs in Victoria over the years. From what you've said, it sounds like west would be selling their soul for a new set of jumpers and a shitty American franchise sounding nickname

haha yeah early on that's how it seems. Though surely you'd not make a trip up to Sydney just to get a set of jumpers.

Having said that looking at other teams they've linked with none seem to come from as strong a league as the GFL that I can see.

As you say it's only speculation at the moment but I'd be interested to hear from the powers that be how they'd plan to run sides in both leagues if red and blue were to merge. Like surely the point of the merger is because both clubs are struggling ( blue west more so I'd say ) and it'd hopefully give the Geelong West community a strong club to support, not to mention making it easier for things like sposnsorship etc.

To me having a merged club and then running sides in both gfl and gdfl would defeat the purpose of merging and nothing would really change.

It's also involving the Cricket and Cycling clubs too so it's really a big push to get that area up and going again in terms of interest and support on a broader basis for various sports it seems. I think developing the ground and it's facilities would also be on the agenda. Easier to get that kind of support with a unified group of clubs and people.

I'm all for it. At least they are getting proactive. Footy out that way is really struggling so if this can generate some more interest - get some more juniors to the club than why not have a crack. Don't worry too much about americanising it as that's what appeals to the younger community. If both clubs keep going the way they are now the cheetahs would fold in a couple of years and West would hold on but never get back to where it was so I say go for it

Let's face it though, no one wants to see the club fold but the way it is panning out AFL Barwon behind closed doors are hoping a couple of clubs just fold and shut up shop. GWSP lease on West oval is up at the end of next year and under increasing pressure form council and AFL Barwon won't be renewing the lease unless things dramatically change. It can only be a positive as during the year the twos did not score a bloody point against St Marys. The only way to get better is a clean slate and hopefully a little more helping hands around the place. It will be really sad times for St Peters but something has to give for this club to rise up the ladder.

Why would AFL Barwon be hoping clubs fold? Couldn't see that being the case. In saying that the promotion/relegation concept can't come quick enough. I know certain clubs are dead against it but it'll end being a great thing for footy in Geelong.

Also worth remembering that all clubs go through periods of success/struggles. It was only 2012 that Grovey won 1 game for the season in the seniors and the reserves went something like two and a half years between wins. 2013 the seniors made the grand final and reserves made a prelim in 2014 and grand final 2015.

Because certain clubs simply cant survive. Namely Geelong West red & blue. They have been cellar dwellers for near enough to 20 years. They are not improving, in blue wests case they have no juniors, they are not going to survive and AFL Baron are not going to help them. The clubs facilities are abysmal, they don't have the sponsorship or financial support to compete with the Newtown's or St Joeys of the league. They really are a basket case and AFL Barwon and the COGG have done nothing to help the club at all. For Christs sake the bloody timekeepers box was purposely set alight in January and there has been no movement or mention for the COGG to repair. They are hiding on the fact that it is heritage listed and they are working on how it will get done. Give me a spell. The clubs are a liability to the new system coming in and something like what was made public today can only be seen as a positive for the future of both blue and red west.

Yet until last year Joeys hadn't won a flag for 20 odd years and Newtown haven't won one for 30 years! I agree that blue west don't seem to have much of a future, but it wasn't too long ago that red west played senior finals and their 2's won a flag ironically against Newtown!

Yes the facilities are in need of an upgrade and to be honest it annoys me that AFL Barwon haven't pushed hard enough as I think it should be the premier venue for local footy in Geelong. A packed west oval is a much better spectacle for a local final than a sparsely populated 35k stadium but that's another argument.

Anyway I'd much rather have a set up like west with character than a soulless piece of shit looking square box that's just been built down in Ocean Grove

Aren't a couple of clubs (at least) facing the cut from the GFL under a restructure? Wouldn't Wests be one of the clubs under this cloud? So how would it go if West Roosters and West Cheetahs merged then Roosters were relegated to the 2nd tier, say Bellarine if that's what it will be called, and they field a 2nd team in the 3rd tier or GDFL. Assuming that there will be a promotion/relegation system, eventually at least, it is possible that both teams find themselves in the same division, in effect, competing against themselves. How the hell could that work?
