BHH confirmed last night that the alignment with Hawthorn will continue through the new VFL-NEAFL combined competition

“We’re excited to collaborate with AFL Victoria, the AFL and fellow clubs to re-shape the country’s premier second tier competition,” said [Box Hill Hawks President Ed] Sill.

“Importantly, in what remains a source of great strength and certainty, we look forward to continuing our 20-plus-year alignment with the Hawthorn Football Club.

...

[Hawks' CEO Reeves]

“With the announcement of a new amalgamated VFL competition, combining the NEAFL and VFL into one league, we will work with Box Hill regarding how our affiliation can continue to achieve success for both clubs in 2021 and beyond.”

VFL setup starting to trickle out

Key points
- aligned and AFL clubs will be permitted to list five players over the age of 23. Five will have to be under the age of 23, and 20 other players under 21, sourced from zones that each club has been allocated.
- The zones are seen as a way of having more players coming out of the NAB League – which turns into an Under 19 and Under 17 competition next year – and going directly to the VFL.
- [Zones for BHH:] Eastern Ranges, Gippsland Power, Hawthorn NGA

Key points
They are seriously reverting to a 17s & 19s league next year?

For ******* years the VFL/AFL pressured the SANFL to get rid of their 17s & 19s, tried to streamline things, make it uniform. And now this.

Who would have thought that good ideas can come from elsewhere?

The article actually mentions that in a bit more detail Moginie,
An AFL recruiter backed the model, and said the onus would be on VFL clubs to work closely with the NAB League teams to create a “one-club’’ feel.

He said he saw it as the VFL’s attempt to replicate the SANFL and WAFL.

“That’s not a bad thing; what they have over there works,’’ he said.

Very interesting. It has been a Hawthorn appointment for years. Bailey, Newman and Bolton were all Hawthorn football club appointees.

My immediate thought too.

Sam Mitchell an option?

Disappointing news on the VFLW - looks like it's reverting to a mickey-mouse comp. Played in Feb and running 'concurrently' with AFLW.

Standard will plummet without all the AFLW players.

Speculation. I wondered why the BHH advertised for a coach. Now it seems strange Sam has been appointed. With the reduction in the number of coaches due to the soft cap, Sam will not have the time Bailey, Newman and previous coaches had to be full time coaches at the BHH whilst working at the HFC. Therefore there may be a need for a second senior coach at the BHH to work with the VFL listed players.

welcolm to australia, where organisations ‘cut’ staff and within 2 years they bloat out again in different structures which are worse performing than what was cut

case in point. The new vfl structure will have a huge travel bill. No doubt in a couple of years there will be ‘conferences’ to save costs. We see that towards th end of 2020, sanfl and wafl and junior comps in those states had some semblance of playing. The new vfl-eastern seaboard comp would have had a cat in hells chance of operating -,effectively four states. There will be COVID related issues in 2021 here, no doubt

Only just realised that VFL will now be played interstate for some matches. Started following the Box Hill Hawks as I could attend matches more easily locally or at other Melbourne grounds, now several games will be too far away to attend.

Anyone else bothered by this development?
