Review Season 2022: How'd we do?

Remove this Banner Ad

We finish 2-20. Most likely the #1 pick for another year.

Plenty to take away - Clarkson, JHF's struggles, TT's up and down year, Goater's fantastic debut, Ziebell's injuries and form drop-off, McKay's emergence as a genuine star, Goldstein's maintenance of the #1 ruck spot against all challengers, Hall's will-he-or-won't-he season, and Noble's sacking, amongst plenty of other stuff.

Do you give this year a miserable fail? Another step on the road to eventual glory? Another crap year we had to have?

Feels like a bad first date but a warm kiss goodnight.

Gotta keep Zurhaar.

Looking fwd to Philips and full steam Cunners next year with LDU reaching elite status.

P Curtis next level please.

Need to sort out backline and forward pressure as a priority.

Have a great off season everyone.

Young for most improved of the journeymen.

Easily worse than last year. Easily.

Delist: Turner, Atu, Mahony, Lazzaro, Kyron (definitely more but those just off the top of my head)

On Thin ice or need an attitude adjustment from from Clarko: Stephenson, TT, Ziebell, Polec, Hall

Bring in some vets, Gunston, Franklin even. Mini top up to ease the pain. We can't finish last 3 years in a row.

I mean shithouse. That said, last two years we've got most of the hard bit out of the way, which is getting a stack of games into players. In game progression will come slowly, think 5-8 wins next year and we're sneaky chance of top 8 in 2024.

2 wins, 20 losses (only better than 7 previous NMFC seasons in the VFL/AFL, all bar 1972 from 80+ years ago).
Percentage of 55.8% (only better than 1930 and 1931)
11 consecutive losses of 47+ points (a new VFL/AFL record)

Results obviously only tell part of the story, particularly for a rebuilding side, but the sheer level of uncompetitiveness we produced most weeks this season was just unfathomably bad - and in a team performing that poorly, with so many structural issues, it's not all that surprising that most players on the list seemed to either stagnate or regress. Absolute write-off of a year.

I'd like to hope we can say the worst is finally over. Regardless of how his tenure plays out, Clarkson as senior coach is a massive appointment, and whilst there were only glimpses of their anticipated talent level this year, it's not unreasonable to expect that most of our younger core will fare a little better in the long term courtesy of getting experience at senior level. If we can adapt fairly quickly to a new gameplan, then results could turn reasonably soon next season. Here's to hoping, because a run of only 7 wins and a draw from our last 59 games has been pretty excruciating to sit through.

B+F - likely to be LDU, who took his game to another level, but Goldstein and McKay in particular deserve some credit for consistent years also.

Will add more detail later but I'm fairly convinced we should try and trade the #1 pick for a bonafide talent in the 24-28 year range.

Thank God the worst year I can remember is finished. The only way is up.

It was literally a wasted year. On an individual front we had a few players make great strides, unfortunately we probably had an equal number slide backwards. On a team front... there is nothing positive. The gameplan was ******* awful, we have had some unhappy campers, and practically everything the players would have been taught will be thrown on the trash heap by Clarko.

Hopefully the AFL does us a solid with draft assistance and we're able to give Clarko some real currency to work with. Getting game time under the belt of our youth will also pay dividends in the future, but I I can't bring myself to say that's really much of a positive considering the quality of those games.

Bring on the offseason changes and next year!
