Like:
  • Moore in the midfield, should persist
  • Day forward, should persist, tough match up and capable of 30+ goals a season.
Learned:
  • Game plan is a work in progress.
  • Poor list, bereft of A grade quality.
  • 2023 will be worse on field than 2022.
Dislike:
- Lack of a plan of what success looks like onfield. Look at Collingwood, their players are coached well and have a clear idea and plan of how they want to play. Our mob are still searching trying to figure out what to do, where to play guys, they’re all over the shop.

Liked: Young talent getting games and showing plenty, Duke, Lewis, CJ, Moore, Dimma and Sicily’s seasons, more attractive footy, beating Geelol and Brisbane and Bruest and Gunston showing they’ve still got it

Learnt: We own the mid-season draft, AA is bullshit, our fitness needs to improve, our best is top 4 but consistency is a big issue, we’re one more good draft away from being a finals side and letting Clarko go was the right call

Hated: Listless showing against St Kilda, fades out against Scum and Shitney, umpiring, seeing Worpel struggle, injuries to key players and seeing Geelong finish top and Shitney getting back into the top 4

Liked:
  • Attractive gameplan
  • Youth being prioritised and trusted
  • Emergence of said young
  • 2021 draft/2022 msd recruitment. Early days but 7/7 hits is unreal

Learnt:
  • Flexibility in positions will define us over the coming years
  • Our defense has gone backwards to go forwards
  • Our gameplan is not a finished product
  • Our culture is incredibly underrated and is what has lead to so much progress this year

Hated:
  • Injuries to key youth
  • Award snubs.
  • Midfield impact.
  • Kennett still being around

Disappointing losses in there and moments of pure frustration at times, but jeez we're now well and truly on an exciting journey with this group!
Can't wait to see how these lads grow over the coming years, and cannot wait for what is looking to be a very active off-season.

Liked:
The new gameplan, it was attractive but it also will stand up when we play finals, pressure, defense and setting up from defense, and building from the midfield where it's one of the easier places to garner talent.

Youth was trusted, given big roles and prioritised, this was a huge step in the right direction.

James Sicily

Obviously some big players to come out and sort of explode and improve massively.

Newcombe, Lewis & Moore were 3 who were awesome to watch, and hopefully even more improvements.

The draft pool of 2021 going into 2022 was awesome, they played a fair amount of games and all showed high levels of talent, Ward started slow but his talents are immense and will be a star, MacDonald was consistent all year and showed why we got him earlier than everyone thought. Long, Serong showed something and Butler showed his talents to a pretty high level.

Learnt:
The defense went backwards, but through design not performance to an extent, more attacking opened the defense up more.

Gameplan isn't a finished product and will need tweaking.

The culture of the group is super and it's why we had so much success with the new coach in 2022, despite only 8 wins.

Disliked:
Loss to the bombers, inconsistency, senior players not stepping up at times, injuries.

Disliked:
Mitchell not being AA and announced as the greatest player of all time
.

Liked: New attacking game plan. Backline and Forwards stood tall all season, AGAIN!

Learned: 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019 Trades, a mess. Clarko's ego got in the way of sensible list management.

Hated: Lack of leadership from experienced midfielders.

Liked: Sam as a new coach and refreshing game plan, players' buy-in, continued development of young players already on our list (eg Lewis, Newcombe, Moore) and very good signs from our 2021 draftees, AFLW inaugural team, Saunders debut (what fun!)

Learned: Patience, it's going to take time - for both teams. Don't get too swayed by any one result. McEvoy's leadership will be sorely missed. Some of our younger players are deeply self driven which augurs well for the future.

Hated: Sicily's snub

Liked:

Mitch Lewis proving me wrong.
Newcombe becoming our pendulum and being more consistent as the season progressed.
Harry Morrison's decision making.
Connor MacDonald being Connor MacDonald - rarely beaten.
Jaegar - possible best ever season.
Emerson Jeka - finding the ball in defense but will be a forward colossus in time - great hands.
Tight back 6 regardless of composition.

Learned:

Yeah, not much but with a fair list you can do much see Collingwood - it's still played between the ears.
Maybe a bit callous but Dylan Moore can be a superstar of the game if he imposes himself over more minutes.

Hated:

Big Boy & Pup seeing us off, Bruest & Gunners another year older.
Stagnation of Connor Nash - has the tools, the brains and the faith of the coaches - 2023 must be breakout.
Kosi continuing in the role of fortunate forward rather than genuine forward option - swap him with Jeka down back.
Injuries to high cost acquisitions.
Lack of a geniuine power small forward
