I'd expect our 150th celebration game to be against Carlton around the middle of the season.

Essendon will probably get a few primetime slots on the basis of Rich, Carl, Coll and Haw all missing the finals - though Melb and the Dogs should rightfully get heaps of primetime games.

They use a professional computer program to do the AFL scheduling - by all accounts it’s one of the toughest in global sports.
Someone told me they use a supercomputer owned by a Canadian company, no idea how much truth there is to that

We can’t play Richmond in R1, it’s too close to ANZAC Eve. Also Fremantle v Essendon is a hugely underwhelming first game. Would rather see Port v Brisbane or Sydney v St Kilda.
But there mightn't be an ANZAC eve ;)
As you can see, the "Traditional" Carlton vs Richmond game isn't being played.
So who's to say all the others are.

They really need to stop with the Richmond vs Carlton opener every year. It should 100% of the time be a grand final rematch, where the premier gets to be the home side.
Nah
Grand Final replay as the showcase game on ANZAC Day

I have a Melbourne vs Geelong matchup opening the season Thursday Night. (Still unfurl the flag, but against another team that they had a memorable game against - Rd 23)

I’ve got a hunch the tigers and blues will open the season on Thursday night in rd 1. Just a hunch though so don’t hold me to it.
Nah gotta go with that blockbuster in Perth starting at 5.20pm (which would also mean 8.20pm on the east coast, an hour later than what the AFL want).

I don’t think you can compare those two things. Everyone (except Carlton and Richmond people) has been saying for years that the Carlton v Richmond opener should be scrapped. I don’t think anyone has ever kicked up a fuss about ANZAC Eve given it wasn’t really a thing before the Dees and Richmond thought to do it.

Assuming COVID utopia, I'd go with this. Start with the usual, Richmond-Carlton always draws well and rates well, regardless. GF re-match Friday night would go bananas I think.

Fixture normally comes out in November sometime?
Last year obviously being different with a month later GF than usual, it was released in December. This year it might go back to normal, might not, usually its late October.

Fixture will be released in 6 games blocks i believe
I'm guessing like last year we'll at least get the 'draw' - as in match ups and approximate venues - and then dates/times in six week or less blocks as we go. COVID will be the decider.

Brisbane-Collingwood is Easter Thursday at the Gabba as per agreement, so that match can't happen round 1.

Either the Suns or Lions will need to play a home game.

Gold Coast gets the home game in Round 1 next year, meaning that I would fixture the Round 1 to something like this for the upcoming season:

Thursday, March 24th
Carlton vs. Richmond (7.20pm)-(MCG)-(Seven)

Friday, March 25th
Western Bulldogs vs. Brisbane Lions (7.30pm)-(MV)-(Seven)

Saturday, March 26th
St. Kilda vs. Essendon (1.40pm)-(MV)-(Fox Sports)
Port Adelaide vs. Greater Western Sydney (4.05pm)-(AO)-(Fox Sports)
Hawthorn vs. Collingwood (6.50pm)-(MCG)-(Seven)
Fremantle vs. Adelaide (8.10pm)-(OS)-(Fox Sports)

Sunday, March 27th
Geelong vs. West Coast (1.10pm)-(GMHBA)-(Fox Sports)
Sydney vs. Melbourne (3.20pm)-(SCG)-(Seven)
Gold Coast vs. North Melbourne (4.40pm)-(MS)-(Fox Sports)

Will there be a Spud Game next season? If so St.Kilda would be the away team in Round 1.

In my opinion, I think Collingwood will be very fortunate to have a home prime time slot at the MCG in round 1. I realise they’re very popular however they frankly don’t deserve it in 2022 after finishing in the bottom 4.

They almost always receive prime treatment each year in round 1, with their strong on field performances supporting their placement against any perceived favourable treatment or perceived an unfair fixture bias towards them.

Unless they’re contractually required to be box office at the MCG in round 1 each year, and I don’t think they are, it makes sense that 2022 would be a year they are not given a favourable ride relative to other popular teams that possibly deserve it more (eg: Essendon).. In my view, it would be more reasonable for Essendon to get a Saturday night home game at the MCG against Hawthorn or Geelong, with Collingwood relegated to the Sunday slot (or god forbid interstate for once)

We will soon see how serious the AFL balances any confidential ‘deals’ against rewarding more successful sides in the keynote fixtures in opening round.

Even though we are asking I don’t think we will get the Rd1. Too many set games.

Thursday - Richmond-Carlton
Friday - Collingwood-Dogs (this is pretty regular)
Saturday night - Melbourne-Geelong or St Kilda

Round 3 is typically the first GF rematch

I reckon you should play us round 1 * Carlton
