Let me just adjust this soapbox here.... there's a few reasons why the return game seems stale. The obvious one is the familiarity of playing a team the 2nd time. Most of the jokes/tropes/abuse has been done first time around, so the second time it's harder to get up for. Add in that this season had a weird schedule so that return matches were less than the usual 11 games apart then that amplifies the familiar feel.
Another factor is when teams are having poor seasons it makes things harder to get up for. If this was 2nd vs 3rd I'd imagine there'd be a bit more spring in both our steps, instead of this impending feeling of doom we both have about todays' result.
We've also had the same 12 teams for 15 seasons and it's getting stale.

To avoid this, the solution is the elephant in the room : expansion. The league currently flits between 16 and 17 game seasons. If the competition had 16 or 18 teams then we could have 15 or 17 game seasons where each team plays each other just the once before finals.
I reckon it'd reduce some of the late season lull that we get with return bouts and fizzling out seasons, as teams face off against a new foe each week.
Despite the naysayers the league can handle expansion. People get added each season and people get cut to make room for them, there's turnover that can be handled to allow expansion to happen.
Expansion can work if there was a plan in place to expand to X amount of teams, there's not enough people willing to make things work around here, too many detractors and the committee is in a constant state of paralysis where nothing gets done.

Anyway, I'm just an ideas man, not a politician and I'll hand over the soapbox to somebody else.

Despite not being around as much due to work/life, I’ve still enjoyed this week far more than last week

The point about it being team position dependent is right though
And for me at least , the birthday/Mother’s Day factors just haven’t helped

This time last year I was absolutely struggling because of the time of year , so this time , I’m making the most of it

Putting all of that aside - 11 games in a season is still plenty . Expanding so there are 13 games per season is one option , but even if we don’t , 11 is still enough. And it’s my favourite number .
