Founding Story

Originally introduced as the ‘Bigfooty Bombers’ as part of involving the Essendon board in the Sweet Football Association. They began playing organised matches in season 04 at Windy Hill under inaugural captain, dougthelegend. By Season 09 they had become the Baghdad Bombers and moved to Abdu Prison and also spent three seasons as the Baghdad Bandits in the late 10’s.

Former administrator, eagleskickass, accepted the Gumbies application prior to the beginning of season 04. Catman was announced as the inaugural captain soon after. Over the course of their history they’ve been named as the Geelong Gumbies, Wolves, and now Gumbies FFC and have played all their home games at the House of Gumby (previously known as The Lair and Gumby Gardens)

Welcome to heritage round in beautiful sandy Baghdady!!!!

And since it is Heritage Round…. What a better way for our opposing visitors to experience the living quarters from way back when! (with a few added luxuries for your comfort ofc)

In the harsh desert environment adequate and adaptable shelter is essential, as weather conditions can change quickly and dramatically. Bedouins developed large tents they could easily erect, dismantle and transport.

The first Bedouin tent is decked out in soft furnishings, a space to relax after a long day playing in the harsh sun and sands of Baghdad. Generators power lighting, a 140 inch flat screen, bathroom amenities, a fully stocked fridge (NO ALCOHOL) and portable air conditioners for added comfort.


The second tent you’ll find the pleasantly furnished sleeping quarters. A little more lavishly styled then our forefathers but times do and must change!


The third tent is the mess tent. Meals are served quickly and promptly. Please note strict meal times due to flies and the heat.

Breakfast 7-9am
Lunch 12-1.30pm
Dinner 7-9pm
Supper 11pm-12.30am


And the last tent which is my favourite is the Hookah Bedouin which is stocked with a ‘take home’ hookah for each of you!

Season 4 a pretty awesome time too- the introduction of the Gumbies and Bombers who without doubt have been the most talked about teams in Sweet FA history and the two great survivors.

I've already had my best Melbourne cup in years. I drew onesmoothoperator in the Calcutta,went for $2400. So I walked away with $1200.
I'll back it tomorrow with the winnings so I don't kick myself for not keeping it.

If my daughter's trifecta gets up it'll probably pay for our European trip next year. She went long!
